January 5, 2011 Dear Ursuline Alumna:
January 5, 2011 Dear Ursuline Alumna: Happy New Year to you and your loved ones! Putting a new calendar on the wall gives us a fresh start with new possibilities, resolutions and goals to make this a wonderful year. At UA the school year is half over, but 2010 will not be forgotten. We had much to be thankful for; we had accomplished many great things; and we now look forward to a blessed and successful 2011. Last month Ursuline was ranked No. 2 in the state of Ohio on the Ohio Graduation Test and the No. 1 all-girls private high school in the tri-state to receive this distinction. In addition to high academic and athletic achievements in 2010, our students grew in their faith by spending many hours helping those in need have a better Christmas. Our new website, which was launched on November 30th, is receiving rave reviews! We hope you have visited many times. If not, check it out and see for yourself at www.ursulineacademy.org. It is user-friendly, attractive and contains a lot of information we know you will enjoy. Also, we hope to generate more "friends" now on our Facebook page - Ursuline Academy of Cincinnati – non-profit organization. We love to hear from our alumnae, so please join us if you haven't already. School News Congrats to our Dance Team who performed at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee on New Year's Eve. Under the direction of coach Brenda Elmore (a former Cincinnati Ben-gal cheerleader) and assistant coach Stacey Lesher, the Dance Team won the 2010 State Championship in their inaugural season. In addition to performing several half-time shows at UA basketball games, the team has a full schedule of upcoming regional competitions and will try again for the state cup in April. Good luck UA dancers! UAPA – Congrats to UA Performing Arts for the stellar review from a member of the Sycamore High School Cappies on the November performance of "The Drowsy Chaperone." Click on the attached link and read on – Ursuline Academy's 'The Drowsy Chaperone' displayed a wide range of artistic abilities Faith and Spirituality has always been deeply ingrained in our students. Whether participating in liturgies and prayer assemblies, or feeding the hungry in a soup kitchen, our UA women are first and foremost living their Catholic education. Two thirds of the senior class has already completed their Kairos retreat; and the final third of the class will be attending the retreat in early February. As you will remember, Kairos has always been an extraordinary experience for our students and still remains one of the most cherished memories of our alumnae. Community Service: Ursuline students reached out to the community this holiday season, spreading cheer in a number of ways. Their primary Christmas project was donating gifts to Hope Emergency Program in Brown County. Students raised funds to buy gifts through a jewelry sale and a casual dress day. Over $1,500 worth of gifts were bought. Families donated gifts through our giving tree, and students brought new gifts to the Fall Dance instead of buying corsages and boutonnieres, making this one of our most successful years for Hope Emergency Program. A small group of students also traveled to Hope Emergency to learn firsthand about this agency, to meet the directors, Ursuline Sisters Sandy Bates and Lucia Castellini, and to prepare the Christmas shop for gift distribution. Closer to home, our students also helped our neighbors. National Honor Society members hosted a Christmas potluck for the residents of Over the Rhine Community Housing (OTRCH). NHS members provided food and hospitality for this event at the new Jimmy Heath House in Over the Rhine. Students also learned about OTRCH, an organization dedicated to preserving affordable and decent housing for those with low incomes. Dr. Vincent Phelan’s Chamber Music class took their Winter Recital on the road, playing at St. Joseph’s Children’s Home. In preparation, senior Mimi Lamantia met with this class to talk about the special needs of the residents of the home who have profound physical and mental disabilities. Mimi has spent this semester as a regular volunteer at St. Joseph’s home as part of the Faithful Service Learning class. She was able to share her love for the residents with the students, who played a wonderful concert at the Home on December 17. Finally, all of the students of this semester’s Faithful Service Learning class (you might remember it as Community Service Class), spent the evening of December 17 volunteering together. They caroled for the residents of Twin Lakes Retirement Community; and then wrapped gifts at St. George’s Food Panty in Clifton to help the pantry get ready for gift distribution to clients. Many thanks to our students, Community Service Coordinator Ruthie Hurley, and all the families and friends who helped make this a blessed Christmas for those in need. UA Carolers at Twin Lakes World history sophomores showcased their knowledge and talents at their Renaissance Festival on December 15 in the Besl Theatre. Under the direction of teachers Elizabeth Gromada and Kelly Stiles, the students demonstrated what they had learned about their Renaissances topics to each other, the UA community and others. Visitors to the festival were able to engage in demonstrations, games, sample food, hear music, and participate in other activities that celebrated the European Renaissance. The event was covered by Channel 19 TV and aired that night. In addition to the Festival, Tammy Bowman's history class put together a Renaissance Faire with miniature booths outside of her classroom and a Renaissance picture gallery inside the room. Sophomore world history students at the Renaissance Festival Alumna Spotlight: UA is proud to welcome Adrienne Berning Kessling '82 as its newest Board of Trustees member. As Senior Vice President of Great American Financial Resources where she has been employed for nearly 14 years, Adrienne has an impressive professional background which includes organizational management, banking and trusts, planning and management on boards. In addition to her career, she also is a mom to Christopher (age 16) and Alexandra (age 13), and she makes time to serve her community as well. Adrienne currently coaches 8th grade volleyball at St. Nicholas Academy, has served for nearly 16 years on the Finance Committee of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church and is a member of the Ohio Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs. With all that is going on in her life, UA is honored that Adrienne would give her time and talents to serve on the Board. "We feel very blessed that Adrienne accepted our invitation to join our Board. Her financial background and knowledge of philanthropy is truly an asset to advancing the mission of Ursuline Academy," says President Sharon Redmond. Adrienne Berning Kessling '82 Class of 2010 Visit: Last year's seniors, many of whom were sporting their college sweatshirts, visited their alma mater on December 17 for an afternoon of nostalgia and reconnecting with classmates. After lots of catching up and refreshments in the gymnasium foyer, they joined the student body in the Besl Theatre for the annual Christmas assembly—an event they definitely could appreciate! This also was a great opportunity for members of the Class of 2010 to pick up their yearbooks if they didn't already have them and sign each other's books. Class of 2010 Reunion 2011: Spring is around the corner and if you haven't already thought about it, now is the time to start planning your Golden Girls (50-year anniversary) and/or Reunion at UA (June 17-18). Are you interested in being a class rep – someone who helps the Alumnae Office plan your class gathering here at UA? Your help would be greatly appreciated. This year we're celebrating the graduation years ending in "1" and "6," but all alumnae are welcome. One way to increase attendance is to have your own class page on Ursuline's Facebook. It's easy, but if you need assistance please contact Marianne Lang at [email protected] Please contact Donna Scheidler Gruber '75 at [email protected] if you can help with the Reunion or have any questions. Current tuition covers approximately 85% of the cost of a student’s education. This leaves a “gap” of nearly $3,500 per student. The Annual Fund contributions help make up this difference, just as they did when you were a student. As we enter the second half of the fiscal year at Ursuline we look to the 2011 Reunion Classes to help lead our Alumnae giving. In order to reach the overall Annual Fund goal of $400,000 Alumnae participation is vital. Making a donation is a perfect opportunity to honor the education you received as a student at Ursuline. Thank you to all who have generously given to the 2010-2011 Annual Fund. To those of you who have not yet made a gift please join your fellow alumnae by visiting our new website’s Donate Now Online link or by sending your gift by mail.
