Alpine Skiing Beginning

Hit the slopes and experience the ultimate
adventure! In this three-day course, students
will learn to ski introductory and beginner terrain while appreciating winter in the mountains
of northern New Mexico. Wear clothing suitable

Science and the Popular Imagination
This class will teach the language and basic
principles of the Pilates Method to develop an

sci fi heroes carry ray guns? In this course we’ll
investigate the public perception of science in
early twentieth century America, particularly
the physical sciences, through lectures and discussions. We’ll read primary sources and learn
how radiation, relativity, and quantum mechanics were reflected in the politics, literature, and

In this 3 hour course, students will learn all the
steps for making, maintaining, managing and
transporting a primitive fire. The class will include
instruction in how to select and prepare an area
for fire and how to craft primitive fire-making

classroom and then move to an outdoor location
on campus for tool and fire-crafting activities.

own handmade paper! You will also learn techniques for creating images on the paper and how
to make your own papermaking screens. Use of
recycled and plant materials for this process
will also be covered. Bring a sack lunch! An

Prepare to enjoy a 3-week journey through
Acrylic, as we investigate how to capture what
inspires you most. The class teaches tools such
the ‘Color Wheel’ and how to use Hue, Value,
Intensity, Tint, Tone, and Shade. We will also
consider the impact of line/edge, shape/space,
composition, light/shadow, and the ‘gestalt’ of
a piece. This class will work for a range of individual skill and knowledge levels. Supply cost not
included in tuition.
This workshop will teach you how to make your
own handmade paper! You will also learn techniques for creating images on the paper and how
to make your own papermaking screens. Use of
recycled and plant materials for this process will
also be covered. Bring a sack lunch! An additional fee of $32 for supplies payable directly to the
instructor will be due at the start of the workshop.

Mediation: Alternative Dispute
Resolution Certificate Course
This intensive course is designed to train and
qualify students to develop or participate in conflict mediation processes. Alternative Dispute
Resolution (Mediation) is geared for all professionals who are focused on “interest-based
bargaining.” This course takes the mystery out
of settlement processes and focuses on reaching reasonable solutions through both traditional
and non-traditional options. The course teaches
techniques valuable to a variety of settings and
management positions. Successful graduates of
this non-credit course will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.
Victim Advocacy Certificate Course
Upon completion of this course, participants will
be prepared to assist and support in a variety of
victim advocacy arenas, including shelters, crisis centers, hotlines, and with state and county
governments supporting victims of crime through
recovery. Course topics include legal terminology
and process, legislation regarding victims’ rights,
effects of victimization, as well as advocacy
and counseling skills. A highly useful class for a
variety of civic and social enterprises. Successful graduates of this non-credit course will be
awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Paralegal Certificate Course
Paralegalism is one of the fastest growing
careers in the country, with a predicted increase
of 28% between 2008 and 2018. This course will
provide you with comprehensive knowledge
of the American judicial system and teach you
practical skills needed to assist trial attorneys,
interview witnesses, investigate complex fact
patterns, research the law, and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. The course
consists of two parts, Paralegal I and Paralegal

Legal Nurse Consultant
Training Course
This course provides the RN and PA with fundamental skills necessary to advise law firms,
health care providers, insurance companies,
and governmental agencies regarding medically
related issues and to appear in court as expert
witnesses. Any RN or PA interested in entering
the legal field can benefit from the education provided by this course. Successful graduates will
receive a certificate for 42 contact hours of continuing nursing education that may be applicable
towards continuing education requirements.

Laurel Conner Laurel Conner has taught
various forms of hatha yoga over thirty-six
years. In her Iyengar yoga classes, she incorporates flow, restorative yoga, breathing and
relaxation into classroom activities. She also
teaches yoga through her private practice.
Raffi Andonian Raffi E. Andonian is the
Museum Educator at the Los Alamos Historical
Society. He has worked at various historic sites
across the country, including the El Camino
Real in New Mexico. He holds a B.A. in History
and is completing his M.A. in History at the
University of New Mexico, where his concentrations are on the U.S. West and Latin America.
Raffi also holds two graduate degrees from the
University of Georgia.
Cynthia Bell-Santos Cynthia Ann Bell dos
Santos holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration, a M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction,
and a B.A. in Education. She has been a
teacher, principal, coordinator, and university
professor. Most recently she taught English
and cultural awareness to future teachers and
translators, translated (Portuguese-English),
and revised and edited texts at the University
of Brasília.
Jim Caffrey Jim Caffrey is a professional
photographer who has taught digital photography at community colleges in the area for
many years. He also works as a photo tour
guide. Based in Jemez Springs, New Mexico
for the past thirty-five years, he spends much
of his time exploring and photographing the
hidden and unique landscapes that the Land of
Enchantment offers.
CamNet CamNet is a technology company
with a strong track record of building effective support for educational institutions and
schools. Their staff includes licensed educators with technical expertise, allowing them
to provide optimum training in technology for
effective student learning and classroom experiences. Their “Tools for Schools” program
provides comprehensive support, from start to
finish, for K-16 educational institutions.
Sequoia Edwards Sequoia Edwards earned
her BFA in ceramics and has studied, practiced and taught art for over twenty years. In
addition to her skills in the arts, Ms. Edwards
has studied theology and currently teaches
computer skills to underserved communities
across New Mexico.

Victoria Erhart Victoria Erhart has graduate degrees in historical theology and has
published in the social, military and economic
history of late antiquity. In addition to teaching
history and comparative religions, she also
provides instruction in business technologies
and holds an MBA. Erhart teaches for UNMLos Alamos and Strayer University.
Diane Garrett-Smith Diane was born and
raised in the Philadelphia area and began to
make art about the time she began to walk.
She has shown in numerous large juried
shows and her work has been displayed in the
Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National
Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington,
D.C. Diane currently teaches art at UNM-Los
Alamos and juries exhibitions at the Fuller
Lodge Art Center in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Robert Geoffrion Robert Geoffrion has
over thirty years of experience teaching Tae
Kwon Do.
Hans-Peder Hanson Hans-Peder Hanson
earned his doctorate in Classics from the
University of Washington in 2009. He teaches
ancient Greek, Latin, and a variety of other
Classics courses at UNM-LA.
Christine Hazard Christine Hazard, Ph.D.
has been serving as a district psychologist with
the Los Alamos Public Schools for the past 19
years and as team leader for the district’s ASD
Resource Team for 10 years. In that capacity,
she provides assessment, program planning,
staff and parent training, and clinical services
to students on the autism spectrum.

Our Instructors
Ginny Hogan Ginny Hogan has a home and
studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A self-taught
artist, her initial images were inspired by
cave and rock art made by native peoples all
over the world. Her current work reflects her
passion for water in lush inner dreamscapes
done in soft greys, blues and greens.
Gary Mazaroff Gary Mazaroff holds a
Masters degree from UNM with a focus on
sports and health. He is a member of the US
and International Racquetball Hall of Fame
and Director of Education for the International
Racquetball Federation. Mazaroff has promoted the sport of racquetball in over 30 nations.
Institute for Professional Development The Institute for Professional
Development of the UNM Department of
Education advocates for professional development models for educators that will give them
the knowledge, skills and identities to strengthen and support the learning of all students in
New Mexico. The Institute engages in projects
that create and sustain a statewide network of
resources for effective professional development of educators in K-12 settings.
Rourke McDermott Rourke McDermott has
performed numerous workshops and lecture
demonstrations of primitive wilderness skills
to youth and adults, including those given at
Valles Caldera National Preserve, Walatowa
Visitor Center at the Jemez Pueblo, Jemez
Valley Public Schools, and PEEC. McDermott’s
bachelors work is in landscape architecture
and he is currently employed in this capacity at
Valles Caldera Natural Preserve.
Siri KhalsA Siri Khalsa has taught yoga for
UNM-Los Alamos Community Education for
many years.
Nicole Kliebert Nicole Kliebert has a
masters degree in communication and teaches
media studies to teens in Los Alamos.
Mary Lutes Mary Lutes, owner of Blue Sky
Pilates, began studying the Pilates Method
10 years ago to help alleviate chronic pain.
Her love for the work led her to complete the
teaching certification program and she is now
certified in Pilates Mat and Refomer. Lutes
currently teaches group classes and private
sessions and has provided Pilates training to
the Los Alamos High School Golf Team and the
Pajarito Free Ride snowboard and ski team.
Rosemary Maestas Rosemary Maestas
is currently an adjunt professor of business
administration and data coordinator at Northern New Mexico College. She has an MBA from
the College of Santa Fe and has taught business and computer classes for over 13 years.
Renae Mitchell Renae Mitchell holds a
Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Penn
State University with a minor in Latin American Studies. In addition to teaching language
classes, she has taught courses in non-western
literature and myth and has earned several
certificates and awards during her career.
Peter Murphy Peter Murphy is a retirement
and estate planning specialist. He currently
teaches throughout Santa Fe and Los Alamos.
A military veteran and Commanding Officer,
Murphy earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from
Wesleyan University and a Masters of Science
Degree from National Defense University in
Washington DC.
Aimee Slaughter Instructor Aimee Slaughter is completing her Ph.D. in the History of
Science, Technology, and Medicine Program
at the University of Minnesota. She also holds
a Master’s in physics and works with the Los
Alamos Historical Society.
Dale Wenberg Dale Wenberg has been
teaching T’ai-Chi Ch’uan for UNM-Los Alamos
since the spring of 2008. He trained with Grand
Master Cheng, reaching Black Belt status in
Northern Shao-Lin Kung-Fu in 1983. He has
also received training in Praying Mantis and
Hsing-I. He has extensive experience teaching
in schools and community centers.

CANCELLATIONS, REFUNDS AND WITHDRAWALS
Students are encouraged to register early to ensure a place in class. If a course is cancelled
by UNM-LA, students will receive telephone notification and a full refund.
If a student withdraws up to five working days before class begins, we will issue a full refund
less a $15 processing fee. If you withdraw after this deadline, you must submit a written
request outlining your reasons for withdrawal. Late withdrawals will be reviewed and granted only for legitimate reasons. Late withdrawals are subject to a $15 processing fee. We will
