Reading—Oh the Places we Can Go!
We begin this month celebrating the life of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
The first book Theodore Geisel wrote and illustrated was And to Think That I saw it on Mulberry Street, but it was no easy task. The book was rejected 27 times before being published.
Later Random House asked Mr. Geisel to write and illustrate a children’s primer using only
225 early reader vocabulary words and so The Cat in the Hat, his most well-known work, was
born—the second of 44 children’s books he would author and illustrate. His books have
spawned children’s television specials, a Broadway musical and a feature-length motion picture with other motion pictures on the way. But his most endearing legacy, and the reason we
celebrate his life and work across America, is his ability to use words to bring laughter, delight, wonder and thoughtfulness into our lives. Enjoy the following examples.
On the art of eating: I do not like green eggs and ham! I do not like them Sam-I-am!
On being true to yourself: Only you can make your mind up! You’re the one and only one!
On aging: You’re in pretty good shape for the shape you are in!
On life’s mysteries: ‘Cause you never can tell what goes on down below! This pool might be
bigger than you or I know!
On respecting your elders: You must not hop on Pop!
On equality and justice: A person’s a person, no matter how small.
On loyalty: I meant what I said and I said what I meant...An elephant’s faithful one hundred
per cent!
Dr. Seuss has inspired many other children’s authors. Here are a few web-sites that will give
you great books to read with your children.
