Time for change: IoD Hampshire and Berkshire Womens’ Network
The IoD Berkshire and Hampshire Womens’
Network is part of a wider initiative to bring
together senior professionals in a way that
encourages more female participation, and a more
even gender mix at senior organisational levels.
The Womens’ Network is for directors who want
to engage on business topics with information
and networking. We currently meet every 6
weeks, 09.00-10.30 in the Winchester area. Our
members drive the agenda, so the objectives of
this group continue to evolve. Rather than pure
networking, the group is about directing activities
for our personal and professional development,
for the local IoD branch, and for the local business
community. We also communicate via a
LinkedIn Group.
One of the members who came along to the
last meet-up for the first time commented: ‘the
meeting this morning was useful and stimulating,
with distinctively more business focus to it than
a lot of networking meetings I have attended’.
Meetings are also fun!
We are exploring a number of business topics and
initiatives to drive us forward for the benefit of the
group and the local IoD. Why not find out more
by joining the LinkedIn Group (IoD Berkshire and
Hampshire Womens’ network), or, even better,
coming along to the next meeting?

Meet our Sponsors
Have you thought about how you could benefit from
sponsorship opportunities with your local IoD branch?
These include sponsoring an event, hosting an event at your
premises or giving our members the opportunity to tour your
premises and learn about your business firsthand.
Information on 2 of our current sponsors follows.
The University of Southampton Science Park sponsors our Third
Thursday Networking meetings, held at their premises in Chilworth.
The University of Southampton Science Park is the natural home in the Solent
region for technology-based early-stage businesses and the commercialisation
of scientific research and development. The Park accommodates over 75 tenant
companies, from one-person start-ups to multi-national businesses, on an
attractively landscaped 45-acre site in Chilworth.
One of the key elements of the success of companies based at the Park is the
business support available through initiatives such as SETsquared, the Science
Park Network events programme, and the Catalyst Centre, which provides
intensive coaching to entrepreneurial technology businesses with high growth
potential. The links that the Park has with the University of Southampton can
help businesses based there to improve their competitiveness and productivity
through the use of the knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the
academic institution.
The vibrant entrepreneurial community that exists at the Science Park makes
it an ideal location to host the IoD monthly “Third Thursday Networking”
event. Operations Director at the Science Park, Robin Chave, commented
“The IoD breakfasts are always very stimulating and engaging events. The
chance to meet informally with members of the local business community
over coffee and a bacon roll provides a great start to the day. Real business
opportunities and connections have emerged from conversations I’ve had at
this event.”
Clarke Willmott LLP sponsor our People Forums,
held monthly at their offices in Botley
Clarke Willmott LLP is a national law firm with 400
lawyers and support staff working from offices in Southampton, London,
Birmingham, Bristol, Taunton and Manchester. The firm was established in
1898 and are proud of their strong heritage.
They have an extensive client base which they advise on corporate law,
governance and regulatory, commercial law, intellectual property, banking
and finance, restructuring and insolvency, employment and HR, real estate

They also have one of the largest litigation practices in the country, with
a resource of 120 lawyers advising on discreet areas including commercial
litigation, professional negligence, financial litigation, property and
construction litigation, and debt recovery.
You may have met Kelvin Balmont, partner, at one of our events. Kelvin
joined Clarke Willmott from Shoosmiths. His corporate experience includes
acquisitions and disposals, MBOs and MBIs, joint ventures, reorganisations
and investments. Kelvin has advised banks involved in corporate transactions
and has drafted and advised on loan and charging documentation. He also

The big economic secret
Graeme Leach – IoD Director of Policy
The 5 significant headwinds are:
Over the past 2-3 months there has been a
consistent run of economic data pointing towards
improved GDP growth this year. This has all come
as something of a surprise to many economic
commentators who have been flailing around
trying to come up with an explanation. They
shouldn’t have been caught by surprise. After
forecasting an L shaped recovery for most of
the past 3 years, in late 2012 I began to upgrade
my GDP forecast for 2013. Why? Because one key economic aggregate had
(1) Debt and de-leveraging. The need for continued balance sheet reduction
in the private sector and deficit reduction in the public sector.
(2) Bank weakness. Normally commercial banks finance economic recovery.
In this cycle their contribution is weaker, hence the need for central bank
intervention with quantitative easing.
(3) The squeeze on household budgets from inflation running ahead of
earnings. The weaker contribution from the household sector is compounded
by the fact that the savings ratio is quite low for the start of a recovery cycle,
with less of an impetus to consumption from a savings rundown.
(4) The on-going threat from the eurocrisis. If it were to intensify over the
2013-14 period (a very real possibility).
begun to accelerate. The measure is M4X, the Bank of England’s adjusted
measure for the overall amount of money sloshing around in the economy.
M4X began to accelerate in late 2012 and over the early months of 2013 picked
up to around 5% (year-on-year) growth. This doesn’t mean we’re looking at a

of its own destruction: the eventual ending of quantitative easing and the
normalisation of interest rate policy.
classical V-shaped economic bounce back, but it does mean that the short term
outlook over the next 6-9 months looks a lot less L-shaped than in the recent
past. In other words 1.5 to 2% GDP growth in 2013 and early 2014. The past
relationship between M4X and GDP growth suggests that broad money is a
good leading indicator over a 6 month horizon.
So just as the weather warmed up in July, the temperature gauge on the
economy has risen as well. But we shouldn’t get too carried away. M4X provides
a real tailwind to growth but there are 5 pretty big headwinds still flowing

The IoD London and the South East Director of the Year
Awards winners
Businessmen from across the region have emerged victorious from the
London and South East Director of the Year awards.
The awards, which reward directors of companies of all sizes and from a
range of sectors, were presented at a gala night at the Landmark Hotel,
Marylebone, in April.
Rodger Broad, Director for the IoD in the South East, said: “The IoD London
and the South Director of the Year awards serve to remind people just how
talented and driven our region’s business leaders are.
“The South East is the powerhouse of the UK economy and the efforts of
directors such as our winners, along with many, many others around the
region, will help drive the UK’s economic recovery.
John Minards, South East Regional Leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP,
title sponsors and sponsors of the Large Company category, said: “These
awards recognise the key individuals of large South East companies that
demonstrate excellence.”
Ian Tandy, Regional Commercial Director of HSBC, sponsors of the Global
category, added: “It was inspiring to hear the stories of the companies
entered in the Global Company Award, the entries were of an amazingly
high standard.
“It was a great opportunity to celebrate business and entrepreneurial talent
and there is no doubt that picking a winner was extremely challenging.”
All the winners now go forward to the UK IoD Director of the Year awards.

Student Membership
In September 2012, the Institute of Directors opened up its membership
for the first time in over 100 years to the young directors of the future,
creating a new membership category; IoD Student Membership.
IoD student membership provides higher education students, the future
business leaders of this country, a range of benefits to support them in their
studies and future career, giving them a competitive advantage when applying
for jobs or setting up their own business. It provides access to bespoke products,
and networking at exclusive local and national events with todays business
leaders.
Still within a year of inception, IoD student membership has achieved UKwide success, with support for the initiative being seen across a number of
Universities within the UK and Ireland.
to foster close links between our students and established members and are
therefore keen for those IoD members who are considering or are able to
provide internship or work experience opportunities to get in contact with us.
This is a key function by which we can develop the cohesion between members
and students, with both parties gaining significant benefits from the interaction,
and as such we have supported the initiative with an online internship and
placement notice board (see www.iod.com/student).
Current initiatives to support Student membership include:
• IoD Student of the Year Award
• Discounted Student ticket option for the IoD Annual Convention
• Online Guru Panel - Business mentors at a click of a mouse
• Internship and workplace online noticeboard
• Linked-in Student members site
The Universities of Kent and Brighton are presently flying the flag for the South
of England, and we are hopeful of expanding IoD student membership to several
other Universities across the region. Both students and universities have been
extremely receptive to the project, seeing first-hand the substantial value added
to the students’ skill sets and their ability to stand out in a crowded, competitive
job market.
IoD student members benefit from many of the advantages attached to full
IoD membership, including access to the Young Directors Forum, key business
events, student-only events and crucially direct contact with seasoned business
leaders.
The IoD is unique in that we have over 36,000 members working across
diverse business fields providing an untapped wealth of experience from which
our student members can benefit. As we grow the membership we are keen

Young Enterprise & IoD
Could you help inspire the next generation?
Young Enterprise is the United Kingdom’s
largest business and enterprise education
charity. Every year we help 225,000 young
people learn about business and the world of
work in the classroom under the guidance of a
network of 5,000 volunteers
What we believe in: Young Enterprise’s mission
statement is “to inspire and equip young people to
learn and succeed through enterprise.” Its guiding
principle is to do this through “learning by doing”
What we offer: We offer something for every year
of education from the age of 4 to 25. Our flagship
Company programme gives students aged 15-19
the opportunity to set up and run their own real
business for a full academic year
What we’ve achieved: Since we were established,
3.8 million young people have taken part in Young
Enterprise programmes in the UK. One million
of these have run businesses on our Company
Programme. Latest independent research from
Kingston University Business School in 2012
found that alumni of our Company and Start-up
programmes were almost twice as likely to set up
businesses later in life.
What motivates us: Young Enterprise argues that
an excessively narrow focus on academic skills and
exams risks side-lining other approaches to learning
and can fail to give young people the employability
skills they need – such as teamwork, practical
thinking, punctuality and business-like behaviour –
to succeed in the world of work.
How can you get involved? Our volunteers
have experience which cuts across every sector of
the economy and a desire to pass on their skills
and experience of business to inspire the next
generation.
Whether you’d like to mentor a student company
on a regular basis, assist in the delivery of one day
programmes or join a Local Area Board organising
events and activities we have a volunteer role
perfect for you.
