ginabatyag kag ang Ginoo padayon nga
magbendisyon sa aton.
Whenever a person returns home
bringing the bacon with him or after
a successful campaign or stint abroad
and especially if his triumph gives
honor to his country, his countrymen
will give him a warm let alone a hero’s
welcome. They welcome him with
open arms, bestowing on him every
accolade. Yes, victory has a thousand
fathers and defeat is an orphan.
headlong but the Lord comes out of
this unscathed.
The warm welcome gives way to
rejection stemming from their
unfulfilled expectations. Jesus has
refused to make miracles and has
forced them to look at their hearts and
see their selfishness and prejudice.
The same joyful and positive
atmosphere awaits Jesus as He
returns to His native Nazareth, as
today’s Gospel tells us. His town folks
enthusiastically welcome Him, taking
Him for a celebrity. They enormously
take pride in Him and regard Him as
their own son considering the many
wonderful and miraculous deeds He
has done in other places.
Initially the sermons which He
delivers at the synagogues strike a
positive chord in the hearts of the
people. The words that He speaks reap
kudos and elicit wonder from them.
They can not deny His noble
countenance, the beauty of His face,
the power of His speech, and what He
has done.
However, all this
notwithstanding, there is no
metanoiea or change of heart taking
place in Nazareth.
Yes, things start rather auspiciously
or on a positive note for Jesus.
However, all of a sudden things turn
out differently. Things begin to go
awry when Jesus touches the sensitive
feelings of the people. They begin to
put Him down by asking the
questions: “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
Prejudice begins to set in. They can
not accept what He is telling them
much less Him as the Messiah, the one
who is sent by God.
Knowing what is in their hearts and
baring the reason for their enthusiasm
and pride in Him, Jesus tells the people
that what is in their minds is the
proverb, “Physician, cure yourself.”
And that they will say, “Do in your
native place the things we heard done
in Capernaum.” In other words, Jesus
is saying that the people are asking
Him to do in Nazareth the many
wonderful and miraculous things He
has done in Capernaum where many
pagans live. People are saying that He
first cure His family, friends, and
acquaintances or that He should only
work for the benefit of His kinsmen.
Lurking behind and shrouded in the
enthusiasm and jubilation of the people
is the selfish desire to be sole
beneficiaries of His healing and
teaching. Lord makes out all this.

THE REJECTION
AT
NAZARETH

The Nazarites are influenced by the
clannishness and exclusivity of the
mentality of the Hews who returned
home from exile in Babylon. Bitter
and sad experiences with their pagan
enemies have engendered among
them a deep sense of nationalism and
so hostility, vindictiveness, and
indifference towards those outside
their race. This not to mention the
fact that they are God’s chosen people.
Jesus refuses to be tied to the parochial
and provincial outlook of His fellow
Nazarites, citing the examples of the
prophets Elijah and Elisha, whose
beneficiaries were not Israelites but
foreigners – a widow from Sidon and
the leprosy – stricken Naaman, a
Syrian. He shows that God is the
God of all – Israelites and pagans.
He reveals the universality of God’s
salvation and that God’s grace and
mercy reach out to outside or to all
and not just limited to the confines
of Israel. All these things are not
just the exclusive and sole privilege
of one people.
To extend God’s salvation to the
pagans is just too much to the people
listening to Him and so their hearts
are filled with wrath. What started
as a positive note ends up in a doleful
one as people go from enthusiasm
to anger.
Surely we can see ourselves in this
Gospel. We oftentimes find the
sermon we hear good or even
beautiful. But the moment it touches
on our personal life and hits us, when
it interferes with the sinful or wrong
things we do, we feel bad about it.
What we want to hear are just
pleasant things. We even try to
impugn the character or question the
credibility of the person who speaks
His words. But you know God’s words
are like a two-edged sword, aren’t
they? Besides, they are useful for
teaching, correction, reproach, etc.
Furthermore we only love God if the
things we ask of Him are granted. But
if they are not, He is no good we turn
our backs on Him. Let us allow God
to be the God of our life. If we do not
have what we want, He answers us
this way although not in accordance
to our own will but to His intention
which is good for us. Man proposes;
God disposes. As we pray it: YOUR
WILL BE DONE. And as we sing it,
here I am oh God I’ve come to do
your will.
Moreover, no one can lay exclusive
claim to God’s salvation. No one has
the monopoly of God and the sole
privilege of receiving His blessings.
His graces are not just reserved for
Christians. God is the God all
nations and peoples of those who
know Him and of those who have
yet to know Him.
It is not good for some Christians to
believe that they are already saved.
For such thinking will just cultivate
an elitist religious. Mentality which
breeds contempt of or indifference to
others. God refuses to be monopolized
by some people. Besides, we do not
underestimate His mercy, do we?
Let the blessings we have received not
lead us to think that we are the most
highly favored people. Let us share
them with others. And let us not feel
bad if others are blessed. “Love is kind
and not jealous,” St. Paul says. (2nd
reading) Let us care for one another.
With God as our Father brothers all
are we. St. Paul also says that of the
three – faith, hope and charity, love
is the greatest.
Everything comes to a head with the
people in the synagogue rising up and
pushing Him forth out of the town.
Then they lead Him to the brow of a hill
that they may throw Him

mangayo gani sing konseho ang hari, indi
sia kahibalo magbutig. Waay lipod-lipod
kag waay liko-liko, ginasugid niya sa hari
ang kamatuoran bisan pa ini sa masami
maskit sa pamatin-an sang hari. Gani,
kontra sia sang hari kag tungod sini waay

Beloved People of God:
God is calling us to participate in transforming our society, to “seek good and
not evil” (Amos 5,14). This is part of our
mission as People of God (cf. Justice in
the World, 1971). In 1991 the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines (PCP II)
called the lay people to fulfill their responsibility in renewing the political order. In 2001 the National Pastoral Consultation on Church Renewal (NPCCR)
made this task one of the nine major pastoral priorities of the Church. The same
call is echoed by the pastoral letter last
year on the Year of the Two Hearts for
Peace Building and Lay Participation in
Social Change.
I. Our Situation
To transform our political order—how
imperative this task is today! The election fever is on us! Campaign advertisements, presidential debates, and sadly,
political killings, fill our media. Outrageous political violence has awakened us
to the reality that if we do not keep watch
together as a nation our electoral processes can drag us down. The existence
of private armies, the proliferation of
loose fire arms, and political dynasties
are obstacles to the growth of a genuine
democratic system.
II. Calls
A. Discernment. In this situation we
urge once more all Filipinos to form
circles of discernment so that they can
see, judge, and act together on issues of
public concern according to moral values. Moreover, we remind once again the

to support candidates that are qualified

We are asked to first articulate the key
values and principles by which we can
evaluate individual candidates across
political parties. This is the kind of politics in which Gospel values form the
bases of our choice of candidates and not
party or family loyalties.
B. On Automated Elections. We
have always hoped for a modernized,
better, and faster form of voting and
counting, imbued with transparency
and integrity. Automated election has
been in use for some time in many countries. For the first time in our history
we are adopting one example of poll automation called Automated Election
System (AES). But at this late hour there
are still many questions regarding the
AES that revolve around the readiness
of personnel and equipment as well as
the readiness of the electorate in the use
of the system. Even more important,
many serious questions about the reliability and integrity of the equipment
and the personnel involved have not
been satisfactorily answered. To be sure
those who are responsible for the AES
are striving to make the system work.
But we must make sure that there are

III. Signs of Hope
In spite of the grim scenario that some
may paint that every election is just the
same, we feel winds of change for the better. Many of our faithful are now heeding
the call of their pastors to be actively
engaged in politics. Many are running for
public office issuing from the call of faith
and service so that people should no
longer vote simply for the lesser evil
among the candidates. There are now
many civil society groups that are concerned and are actively moving to ensure that this election of 2010 will be an
honest and credible one. We especially
note with encouragement many young
people who go out of their way to offer
their services for the good of our nation.
These signs are fruits of the efforts of
many in the past years to educate our
people to develop their social conscience
and to make their faith the motivation of
their political actions. Pope Benedict XVI
teaches us: “Worship pleasing to God can
never be a purely private matter, without consequences for our relationship
with others: it demands a public witness
of our faith” (Sacrosanctum Concilium #83)
Let us be ever vigilant for our country.
Together let us be involved in the coming automated elections. Let us vote
wisely that we may have God-fearing and
honest people as our leaders.
May our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of
Peace, be our guide and teacher in our
hope for a better tomorrow. May our
Good Lord receive our offerings of
prayers, good intentions and selfless service for the good of our people! To Him
