CLUB WEBSITE: HTTP://WWW.JCSPORTFLIERS.ORG September 21, 2006 Hi, There haven’t been any scheduled flying events over the past month, and some members took advantage of this to go off to enjoy airplane events at different locations. One example of this as shown in the three photos on this page was the trek made by members to the Annual RC Jamboree at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in New York State held on September 9 and 10. The photos were taken by Sue Constantine who went up there with fiancé John English. The top picture shows the German Albatross, one of a number of World War I replicas up there that actually fly in the air show. The next one sees John kneeling between the two Gee Bee racers that he flew there. In the bottom pic we see Sue standing by what we believe to be a Fokker D-7. Others known to have been up at Rhinebeck included Jim Baye, Bob Keibley, Adam Lilley, Jen Ort, Frank Beshears and wife, Steve Gallop and Donna Mittelman. Steve flew Larry Cressman’s scratch-built Gee Bee racer which won a prestigious “Spirit of Rhinebeck” award plaque for best in its class (1930’s racing planes). Jim Baye cited crazy weather for the event that included perfect conditions, a brief torrential downpour, and strong Sunday winds which held down the flying, especially of the larger models. NEXT MEETING – Will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 8:00 PM at Red Bank Regional High School, In addition to the usual monthly raffle, this will be a Project Nite that pays cash prizes for the top three models in both the Scale and Sport categories Page 2 CLUB NEWS KITE FLYING AT THE PICNIC Berger Photos August 20 Club Picnic – Around 40 members and guests attended our annual family picnic held in near perfect weather conditions. They were treated to an ample supply of picnic refreshments plus fruits, salads, cookies etc. brought in by volunteer contributors. Mark Nettleingham and wife brought in most of the foods and handled much of the cooking. RC flying is not allowed at our picnics but nobody said anything about kite flying. The wind was perfect for kites and quite a number of them were put into the air. A few of them also found their way into the trees because of the wind direction, and part of the day’s entertainment consisted of watching guys rescue their kites from the branches. A dozen members participated in Ed Runkel’s annual horseshoe pitching contest. Perennial champion Stan Berger was upset by Rob Kallok in the first round, leaving the field open for a new winner. Chris Cavalluzzi, who came to the field to fly and not knowing about the picnic, was a last minute entrant and ended up winning over Bill Buck to take first place. Upcoming Flying Contests – Our one month respite from club competitive flying events comes to an end with three contests scheduled for the next thirty days. The first, a fun event called Musical Chairs, will take place this Sunday September 24. Two weeks later on October 8 the more Competitive Pumpkin Classic Pattern contest will be held in three classes to level the playing field for pilots of diverse skills. Schedule of maneuvers will be shown later on Page 5. Then two weeks after that on October 22 we’ll have the annual RC Bowling event where you attempt to knock Kevin Schlosser’s bowling pins with a plastic pumpkin strung from the bottom of your plane. Rob Launches Adam’s combat kite. Bill Buck landing his biplane kite. Rob’s kite in the air It all adds up to a lot of flying fun and excitement. Come on out and give these events a try. VP Greg Drusjack conducted the meeting in President Stan Berger’s absence. # Greg spoke at length about the success of our AMA District II Fly-In and told a number of related anecdotes including a woman phoning in to find out where we had bought the delicious hamburgers. He thanked all who helped out at the event and specially praised Mark Nettleingham and wife for their work on the refreshment stand. MODEL OF THE MONTH Photos by Stu Katz 1st Place – Dick Sarpolus. Scratch-built Russian Stormovic, Cheetah 42 engine. # Treasurer Stu Katz added to the success story by noting that food and raffle sales at the event had earned the club a profit of over $800. # Jim Baye recommended that Park officials be approached for the long delayed parking lot expansion that was supposed to have been done. # Questions were raised about the disappearance of the plane service tables at the field that had been moved into the pit area without authorization and then removed by the Park. The Exec Board will review the situation. 2nd Place – Bob Kiebley, Tiger Moth built from old Sterling kit modified to RC and electric power. # Tim Mulholland won the monthly raffle prize, a nice package including a Hobby Lobby YAK 55 Foamy ARF, brushless motor, ESC and three servos. See Photo below: 3rd Place, Stu Katz, Twin Star, two Axi motors. Mike Grosso, Sig 4 Star 60, Enya .90 4-stroke engine. Page 4 Model of the Month, Continued Rob Kallok, Stevens Aero, built from kit. MODEL AVIATION CLASS By Stan Berger Our classes are now under way. There are a total of 16 students enrolled in the class which is the maximum number allowed. Twelve of the students are between the ages of 11-14 and we have four adults as well. We are building a Goldberg Eagle II trainer and an Avistar. Next week one of the students will also be bringing in another Avistar that he just bought from Kenny’s store (Colorest) giving us a total of three aircraft to build. Helping out in this years class are: Stan Berger, Stu Katz, Bill buck, Darryl Schlosser, Rob Kallok and Ken Klodin. Rob talks about wing details. Charlie Wehler, 25E Ultra Stick ARF electric. Bill explains kit parts as Darryl observes. Ed Runkel¸ bought Great Planes Tracer, OS .46 LA Engine Ken shows how to mix epoxy. Rich Border, Aquila Sailplane, bought broken and repaired Page 5 Sportsman Pattern NEAT 2006 – The Best Yet!!! – By Rob Kallok The weekend of September 15-17th was the timeframe for this year’s edition of the NEAT (Northeast Electric Aircraft Technology) Fair. In my humble opinion, this year’s event (#7, the 4th for yours truly) was the best yet. Representing JCSF was Adam Lilley, Bob Kiebley, and Kevin Schlosser. This year’s event had over 300 registered pilots (Bob Kiebley was #300) and several hundred spectators. For three days (not counting the setup day on Thursday) the air was filled with planes, with a total of ten flight stations in operation (six for larger aircraft and four for park flyers). Planes ranged in size from 4” wingspan scale fighters with advanced micro gear, to 150 mph plus Reno scale racers, with power in excess of 4 kilowatts. And the flying wasn’t limited to daylight hours – the JCSF contingent flew from sunrise to sunset, and them some, with flying continuing one night until 2am. There are no down times at NEAT! The JCSF contingent wowed the crowd at NEAT as well. Adam flew two demo flights with his ¼ scale J-3 Cub, eliciting loud wows and eeks as Adam flew his Farmer routine up and down the valley, and as usual getting up close and personnel with the trees in the area (at least it looked close). Bob Kiebley’s F-14 got a lot of attention as well, with SKS Video taping his performance and interviewing him afterwards. Later in the day on Sunday Bob flew an escort flight with his Alpha P-51 and Joe Beshar’s B-17 (piloted by Dave Baron). Afterwards Dave approached Bob and suggested they do a formal demo next year at NEAT ’07 – it was that impressive! All in all, NEAT was all we hoped it would be and more. It’s also important to realize that NEAT is much more than a fly-in. It’s a huge social event and reunion. It’s an opportunity to catch up with folks you might only see once a year, and you just pick up where you left off. It’s an opportunity to get to know the vendors and designers who bring great products to life. And it’s a time to create new friendships for years. Bob and Adam already are keyed up for next year’s event – I hope other members will make the trek next year as well. They won’t be disappointed. Some 30 pilots competed in this highly competitive Contest. Trent was said to have won convincingly in the Sportsman Class, while Stan committed himself well in the Basic class though failing to place in the top three because of a caller error. Spad.
