A n n u a l R e p o rt July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012 Our mission—to excel in addiction and mental health treatment; to serve men, women and families affected by these illnesses; and to promote lasting recovery —has guided Gosnold since 1972. Scientists estimate that genetic factors account for between 40 and 60 percent of a person’s vulnerability to addiction, including the effects of environment on gene expression and function. However no single factor determines whether a person will become addicted. The overall risk for addiction is affected by the biological make up of the individual, including gender, ethnicity, development stage and social environment. —National Institute on Drug Abuse Gosnold, Dear Friends of ental addiction and m ith w r ffe su ho w ms and those ar of service to inpatient progra ye r ou th 40 to r s ou on si ed is brat adm le are in In 2012 we cele record year for eans more peop a m le as w op It pe e s. or er m g sord clinics. Ta O E C t/ Presiden advancing recovery Primary Care Collaborations O ur work with area community health centers has advanced the coordination of care in a significant way and we are expanding those relationships in the coming year. In 2012 we launched our first program to place clinicians in the offices of primary care physicians with great success. We are able to support the primary care doctor and working side by side with his/her staff we can intervene and assist with patients struggling with depression, substance use, and other conditions. Next year we will expand this to other interested PCPs. Medication - Assisted Treatment Dr. Michael Barnett and clinician Susan Fields New medications hold the promise of helping patients in early recovery. We are using a non-addictive medication called Vivitrol to help stem the cravings that often lead to a resumption of use. As we implement this approach we are participating in research to test its value as another recovery tool. Falmouth Hospital Collaboration In November 2011 Gosnold and Falmouth Hospital began a collaborative program to integrate care and reduce complications for patients admitted to Falmouth Hospital with alcohol-related health problems. The partnership provided an opportunity to include addiction treatment into primary care and the training helped improve the hospital staff’s understanding about addiction and current treatment approaches. The integration of care has resulted in improved patient outcomes and shortened hospital stays. Recovery Coaching Staying connected with patients and providing hands-on support is critical to sustaining remission. We are testing the use of personal Recovery Coaches who remain engaged with patients after they leave inpatient treatment. This engagement through personal visits, Smartphone applications and life planning is already making a difference in the lives of many of our patients and we look forward to expanding its use next year. saving lives DONORS $25,000 - $50,000 Anonymous Cape & Islands United Way Hermann Foundation The Peter and Elizabeth C.
