We are all in the cattle business and have a passion to see the Red, White and Roan succeed. Your American Milking Shorthorn Society Board of Directors met December 6 – 7 in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. They had two full days of discussion – another piece of the successful Milking Shorthorn journey. There are several updates from the meeting that we would like to share: As I mentioned in my previous report, AMSS received about 85% of the monies gifted from the Jimmie D. King estate. The Board put in a lot of discussion on how this generous donation could benefit the future of our Society and decided to place 50% of the money into the Foundation Fund investments and the remaining 50% of the money into the General Fund investments. This will replace the money removed from investments the last few years to cover the cost of operations and will allow us to create a separate Foundation Fund investment portfolio. AMSS is very thankful for this large gift, which will help us finance some new projects such as the new True Type Cow and the first edition of The Bull Book – both which should get completed this year. The Board also made many other decisions: The first was that AMSS will no longer require a credit card to be on-file for breeder to access the online database for registrations and reports. However, all work ordered online will be held until full payment is received. The Board voted to initiate a moratorium on registrations and transfers. This will include all female registrations and all transfers received in the AMSS office between January 1 – June 1, 2014. All female registrations will be $20 each and all transfers will be $10 each – regardless of AMSS membership status. This is a great opportunity to catch up on registrations and share From the President Cont. on pg. 30 *Editor's note: We apologize for reprinting the By Susan Lee incorrect President's Post in the Holiday issue of Happy New Year the Journal. - Purebred staff A Time to Reflect and A Time for Planning With the All-American Contest, the 2013 show season has successfully concluded. This is the first year that Purebred Publishing has handled this contest. After the usual start-up “trials and tribulations,” we think this will initiate a new and more successful format for this program that is financially sustainable into the foreseeable future. If you have concerns or questions, please contact Cory, myself, or any other board member with helpful suggestions. What a fantastic show season we have had this year and the quality of cattle continues a rapid pace of improvement. The major shows like the Expo and NAILE draw international visitors from all over the world and provide an unparalleled opportunity to show everyone what the modern Milking Shorthorn has to offer. We have had several inquiries recently. Visitors to the booth in Madison from the Dominican Republic want red genetics from the Milking Shorthorn to use on their Romanian Red breed. They have a project with 150 to 175 breeders nationwide and need grazers that will complement their region. The Milking Shorthorn fits well with their desired goals for the future with an efficient, red, grazing breed. Breeders from Nicaragua stopped at the booth and also toured Agnews' Mapleton Valley herd. They want embryos and semen as well as live animals. Breeders from England are visiting Canada as well as here to find animals, embryos or semen. Thanks to Agnews’ for organizing a tour of Wisconsin breeders for these visitors. Geoff and Judy Cochrane from the Kangawarra Illawarra stud in Australia visited the Big E and the Harrisburg All-American this fall and toured some herds. Currently, we are researching the selection criteria for each of these groups and will then put this on the website. If any of you are interested or have something for the international markets, you can e-mail me or Cory. Export/import regulations are different for each country and we are looking at options to help breeders navigate these requirements. These opportunities do not just appear! We continue to work diligently to develop and maintain avenues of communication with all interested parties throughout the world, wherever that may be. Martin and I returned from a visit to England the first week of September. By the time you read this, Katie Agnew will be home from attending IDW in Australia. Other breeders have visited other countries as well and it is certainly obvious that there are a lot more places we could go to promote the breed. The regular Winter Board Meeting was held in December in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin with a Friday evening dinner at Agnews. What a great group of cattle we were able to see at the farm and if anyone has not visited there, I would encourage you to do so. I love the fact that there are more Milking Shorthorns there every time I visit. Thanks Agnews for the hospitality! A summary of Board actions is included with the renewal packet which you received at the end of the year. As always, should you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact any Board member or Cory. A couple of exciting new projects are scheduled for the first quarter of this year. Breeder: Nick Raggi & Dale & Deanna Bendig, Gettysburg, PA Owner: Aaron Sparling, Ralston, PA An “Online National Sale” will be held March 13 to 15. If you have animals you want to sell or need to buy, contact Cory, Clint or Billy. Many thanks to Clint for his expertise in developing this “first” for our breed. His experience with his online semen sales of the past several years has been vital in accomplishing this project. In addition, there is a registration moratorium from the first of the year until June 1, 2014. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone to get caught up with the registration of over-age animals. It is particularly helpful to new members of the Society to be sure everything on the farm is registered, regardless of age. A team effort is necessary for this to be the greatest success and everyone needs to spread the word. If you know of someone who needs help, Cory is there. There are many avenues for breed promotion. The Board has made a commitment to special promotions of two important facets of the breed. The Dual Purpose and Genetic Expansion programs will be highlighted in the Fall Issue of the Milking Shorthorn Journal. It remains for all breeders involved with these segments to participate with increased advertising of their animals. The Education Committee would like to produce a video but this can’t be done without input from breeders. Send your pictures, videos or other information to Jody Nus. Happy New Year. Let’s make this a new beginning to become more involved for a most productive year. Let’s make this one of our best, both personally and for the AMSS. www.milkingshorthorn.com 27 Winter Heifer Calves (7) Junior B-D-F Pappy Core 6312971 Born 12/03/12 2nd International Jr. Show, 1st Winter National Jr. Show, 2nd Indiana State Fair. The Board decided to move forward with hosting an Online National Sale. The first edition of this sale will be held March 13-15, 2014. A copy of the entry form with the sale guidelines was sent out with your membership renewals and is available on our website. This will be an exciting avenue for our breeders to market cattle to the other breeders across the country. The Board raised fees for type classification and milk production recording for non-members. Fees for these services to our members will remain the same. 30 Milking Shorthorn Journal Congratulations to Jody Nus and Vince Ruzic on their entries in the slogan/logo contest. The combination of Jody’s slogan and Vince’s logo will be made along with our new True Type Cow to become our new logo to market our breed. The Board decided to waive the $1 entry fee for the Jim King Triple Crown Futurity for animals born September 1, 2013 – August 31, 2014. This is due to a time lag in getting this updated in the database. All females born in this time period and registered by December 31, 2014, will be automatically entered into this futurity. The Junior Society Lease Program will begin with the upcoming show season in Winter 2014 2014. A copy of the form is available on our website or by request from the office. Membership and program renewal packets were mailed in late December. I would like to remind everyone that memberships are based on the calendar year, so please send in your renewals to ensure you receive all the benefits of your membership including your subscription to the Milking Shorthorn Journal. AMSS looks forward to working with everyone through a successful new year. Farming was his passion. He was a man of honesty and integrity. His handshake was worth more than a piece of paper. He always kept his word. Born in Tiffin, Ohio, on August 12, 1950, he was the son of the late Carl and Edith Staib. He graduated from Mohawk High School, Sycamore, OH in 1968. On October 25, 1975 he was united in Christian marriage with Sherri Layne Withers at the Petersburg, Ohio, Presbyterian Church by Reverend Robert Butcher. Henry met Sherri while showing Milking Shorthorns, the breed that fills every need. Henry’s family showed under the Carl H. Staib and Sons Milking Shorthorns name. Sherri’s family hails from Withers Honey Creek Farms. He had a lifetime membership of the Ohio Purebred Dairy Cattle Association. He loved to fly and had his pilot’s license. Their dream was to raise their children on a farm and for them to also have the experience of showing Milking Shorthorns. The family continues to show cattle today as J-Lo-Jo Milking Shorthorns. Henry operated the farm for 31 years and built it into what you see today. He lived his dream of having his own grain system and farming alongside his son. He loved being “Papa Henry” and spoiling his granddaughters. Jordan learned quickly that Papa’s lap after supper was the place to find a bowl of ice cream. Jaylyn was fed her first bite of ice cream on Papa’s lap this summer. His big arms were always able to soothe the babies and put them to sleep. Henry drove school bus for Chateaugay Central School for 22 years. He was a member and treasurer of the Frontier Lodge #517 Free and Accepted Masons where he was a Past Master. He served on the Cornell Cooperative Extension Board for many years. He was a member of the Chateaugay United Methodist Church and served as treasurer for many years. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in August 1970. He received his Honorary American FFA Degree in 2001. Along with his wife of 37 years, he is survived by his three children and two daughters-in-law: J. Carl and Jamie of Chateaugay; Lori Marie of Massachusetts, and Jon Henry and Melissa of Tennessee; and two granddaughters, Jordan Elizabeth and Jaylyn Grace. He also leaves behind two brothers, Harvey Staib (Tiffin, OH), Calvin Staib (New Riegel, OH) and a sister, Carolyn Hare (Hereford, AZ), along with many nieces and nephews. 46 Milking Shorthorn Journal Betty L. Pratt, 89, of Urbana passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2013 in her home. She was born August 28, 1924 in London, Ohio, the daughter of Robert K. and Lillie F. (Stewart) Morehart. Betty was a graduate of Mechanicsburg High School. She was a member of the Caroline Chapter Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron in 1958 and the Grand Representative to Massachusetts 2009. Betty served as the president of the Champaign County Farm Bureau, secretary of the Ohio Milking Shorthorn Society, and was a founder of the farmers market in Urbana. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She is survived by her son, James W. Pratt Jr. of Mechanicsburg; her daughters, Cynthia (Ernest) Fritz of Harrison Bay, TN, Karen (Michael) Bodey of Urbana, Ohio and Polly (Michael) Mason of Lexington, Ohio; grandchildren, Matthew (Angie) Fritz, Evan (Caitlin) Ullom, Emily (Jason) Monnat, Elaine (Clay) Halterman and Jason Pratt; great-grandchildren, Avery, Braxton & Ryland Fritz, Ellajane Monnat, Ainslee & Wyatt Halterman; sister-in-law, Florence Morehart of Mechanicsburg, Ohio; as well as special friend, Mary Beth Henry. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband James W. whom passed on December 24, 1975; brothers, Noah Morehart, Robert Kennedy Morehart Jr. and sister, Lillian Fauver. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Milking Shorthorn Endowment Fund, PO Box 409, Eden Valley, MN 55329. Mary O. Dole died on Dec. 10, 2013 at home on Anderson Farm in Shelburne, age 99. Mary Evelina Otis was born May 11, 1914 in West Thornton, New Hampshire, the daughter of Cylence Jane Lowell Otis and Arthur Monroe Otis. Her only sibling, her brother Allen (Bud), graduated from West Point and had a career in the U.S. Army. His two children, Allen (Jerry) Otis and Jane (Otis) Kircher and their families visited Aunt Mary throughout her long life. Mary's family moved frequently throughout northern New England when she was growing up, as her father was a forest surveyor who managed timber camps. When she was in her teens, her family settled on a farm in Chesterville, Maine, and she studied teaching at the Normal School in Farmington (now the University of Maine at Farmington). Mary's career as a teacher took her from schools near Ogunquit, Maine, to Cummington, Mass., where she met her husband, Stevens Field Dole, at Winter 2014 the Cummington Fair. Mary taught at Sanderson Academy in Ashfield and taught social studies at Mohawk Trail Regional High School when it opened until her retirement from teaching in 1976. Mary and Steve settled on Steve's family farm in Shelburne, Anderson Farm, and had two sons: George and Bucky (Steven), the Dole Brothers. Mary was proud of her sons and their work. Mary was also always interested in her two granddaughters: Lynn and Helen, both of whom follow in her footsteps as educators, and grandson George and his family: wife Xian and children Wiley, Bryan, Tristan and Eliza Dole. Mary loved to have people come to visit and remembered fondly the era when cattle people would stop by and stay for dinner. Mary enjoyed gardening, cultivating extensive flower and vegetable gardens. Mary enjoyed music, having played the violin as a child. Mary took great interest in history, especially the history of Anderson Farm and the many generations that have lived there. Mary was involved with her community in many ways, including as a volunteer on the Bridge of Flowers, president of the Shelburne Falls Women's Club, librarian at the Shelburne Center Library, as well as longtime member of the New England Milking Shorthorn Association, the Shelburne Grange, the Congregational Church in Shelburne Center and the Hillside Agricultural Society that runs the Cummington Fair. Over the course of her long life, Mary made it possible for a number of people, including her husband Steve and his aunts, to be at home until they died. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Bridge of Flowers P.O.
