DSSC -USA Computer Project 2011 D.S.Senanayake College OBA USA
DSSC -USA Computer Project 2011 D.S.Senanayake College OBA USA SUMMARY OF THE PROPOSAL The D.S.Senanayake College USA OBA branch is setting up a project aimed at raising funds to help students with updated computers and other software. As you know, technology is changing quite rapidly resulting in a frequent need of new computers and other tools necessary to make sure the current students have access to the general standards of education. One of the major issues D.S. Senanayake College is facing right now is not being able to provide any continuous computer education to students from grade 6 through 9 due to limited number of computers. This has resulted in not conducting necessary computer courses which all other schools are currently providing. The intention of this project is to provide resources needed for computer Lab 4 and to alleviate the above mentioned resources limitation. We believe that for the project to be successful, we need at least 20 new or one year old computers to be donated to the college. It is only by your donations that we can help to buy required computers for our school. All funds contributed towards the DSSC OBA USA will be used to buy computers and our target is to buy minimum of 15-20 computers. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support. Sincerely, DSSC OBA, USA 2|Page CONTENTS SUMMARY OF THE PROPOSAL ................................................................................... 2 CONTENTS........................................................................................................................ 3 SECTION 1: CONTEXT 1.1 Background to the Computer Education program at DSSC ............................. 4 1.2 Background to the DSSC USA OBA and our involvement in helping the college and the currents students. ......................................................................... 5 SECTION 2: OBJECTIVES,STRATEGIES & ACTION PLAN 2.1 Objective ........................................................................................................... 5 2.2 Strtegies............................................................................................................. 7 2.2 Action Plan........................................................................................................ 8 SECTION 3: CONCLUSION ............................................................................................. 9 SECTION 4: DSSC USA OBA BOARD MEMBERS & KEY STAFF MEMBERS ... 10 3|Page SECTION 1: CONTEXT 1.1 Background to the Computer Education program at DSSC The Computer Society has a membership of over 1500 students and is one of the mostly active student bodies of the college. Since its beginning in 1993, the opening of the computer laboratory with 20 workstations, the society has been utilizing valuable computing knowledge to the college’s student population. Recently the Computer Society organized an all island software competition and many workshops at the National Level to share the knowledge with other schools. The school has only 3 main computer labs for the teaching and learning processes. • Computer Lab 1 (SEMP Lab) has 20 computers. ( in 2006) • Computer Lab 2 (Grade 10 - 11) has 07 computers ( in 2007 ) • Computer Lab 3 (primary) has 40 computers ( in 2007) These three labs are used for the following programs offered by the school to the students. Grade 1 to 5 Students are offered a basic computer awareness program. Approximately 1600 students take advantage of the offered course to learn the basics. It is the computer Lab 3 with 40 computers that is used for this course. Grade 6 to 9 Students are not offered any computer lessons due to the lack of computer resources at the school. Grade 10 and 11 Students in Grade 10 and 11 are required to take the ICT course under the current curriculum and to accommodate computer Lab 2 is used and it has only 7 computers. This year, total of 373 students have Enrolled for the ICT course which will be managed with only 7 computers. Grade 12 and 13 Students in Science & Commerce sections have an option of enrolling in the GIT course. Currently approximately 500 students are enrolled for this course. They also can enroll in the ICT course which is offered as a major subject under the current curriculum. There are 50 students currently enrolled in this course. 4|Page 1.2 Background to the DSSC USA OBA and our involvement in helping the college / currents students. The D.S.Senanayake College OBA USA branch was set up in 2008 and is a voluntary based association of the past pupils of DSSC living in United States of America. The board/committee consists of 10 members and the membership of approximately 40 past pupils. One of our main projects conducted yearly is the DSSC USA Scholarship Fund Project. This project uses its funds to assist DSSC Advanced Level students who have excellent academic track records but face financial difficulties in pursuing their studies. The project was initiated in 2008 and the goal was to help a couple of deserving students by providing financial assistance for tuition and other amenities on monthly basis. The DSSC OBA USA has been successful in setting up a USA/Sri Lanka fund that helps five to ten of our DS brothers who need financial assistance on a yearly basis. Currently the fund totals approximately $7600 and we have sponsored a total of 14 students to date. http://www.dsscusa.org/scholarship/index.html SECTION 2: OBJECTIVE, STRATRGIES & ACTION PLAN 2.1 OBJECTIVE For a college of approximately 6000 students, only a total of 67 computers are available. Further these computers needs to be replaced with newer models as well. In order to achieve success in providing a comprehensive and continuous computer education, we need to equip the empty Computer Lab 4 with new computers. Currently the Lab 4 does not have any computers and is not been used. 5|Page We believe that for the project to be successful, we need at least 20 new or one year old computers to be donated to the college, so that the college can use Lab 4 and start providing the necessary classes to the grades 6 through 9. The goal of this project is to collect at least $3000 (approximate Rs. 324,000), which we have calculated to be adequate in order to donate 20 computers to our college. After our complete financial analysis, it was decided that the computers be purchased in Sri Lanka. The main reason being the fact that, all computers purchased will then have a valid one year warranty. After market research, the best offer with one year warranty quoted to be approximately Rs. 16,000 per computer. Hence if we achieve our goal in collecting $3000, it would allow us to purchase the necessary computers needed. The funds / donations gathered from our members and very generous non members will be handled by the DSSC USA OBA Branch committee members. All funds (100%) will be used to purchase computers and will not be used to cover any administrative costs. DSSC USA OBA as a policy, Commits to Transparency. We believe that, transparency promotes honesty and accountability. Therefore all finances relating to this project will be displayed online on our website (www.dsscusa.org). We would gladly welcome suggestions from donors and members with regards to this fundraising project. 6|Page 2.2 Strategies We see this as a six months project, at the end of which we believe that the computers will be donated, and it will be the responsibility of our college to maintain these computers. The planned Strategies for the six month period are as follows: 7|Page 2.2 ACTION PLAN All donations will be accepted by checks.
