Raiders begin offseason workouts
Los Angeles Angels Albert Pujols holds up the balls that he hit for his 499th, right, and 500th,

WASHINGTON (AP) — Albert Pujols
smiled as he explained why he felt the need to
apologize to his wife for hitting homer No. 500
so quickly after No. 499.
She had planned to be there in person once
he got within one of the milestone.
He didn’t give her the chance.
Pujols became the first major leaguer to get
his 499th and 500th homers in the same game,
connecting twice Tuesday night and driving in
five runs in the Los Angeles Angels’ 7-2 victory
over the Washington Nationals. He’s the 26th
player in big league history to reach 500.
“I went and made a phone call and I called
her, and she was doing her nails. And everybody in the salon, I guess, was telling her, ‘Congratulations!’ And she was like, ‘Did you just
hit your 500th?’ I was like, ‘I’m sorry,’” Pujols
said with a laugh.
“She would have loved to be here with my
kids and my family. She drives me every day
to try to be a better person, a better player,”
he added. “I would have loved to share this
moment with her here.”
Hitting like the Pujols of old, the three-time
NL MVP delivered a three-run homer in the
first inning and two-run drive in the fifth, both
off Taylor Jordan (0-3).
“I knew this year, it was going to happen,
whether it was tonight, tomorrow, two months
from now,” Pujols said.
He also hit his 400th homer at Nationals
Park.
“I admire his ability and the way he goes
about playing the game, and I have for some
time,” said Washington manager Matt Williams, who played against Pujols. “I just wish
he’d do it against somebody else.”
About three months past his 34th birthday,
Pujols is the third-youngest to get to 500; Alex
Rodriguez and Jimmie Foxx were 32.
Pujols has eight homers in the past 13 games
and leads the Angels with 19 RBIs.
“That’s the Albert I’m used to seeing,”
Angels outfielder Mike Trout said.
The 500th homer went to left-center field on
an 89 mph pitch with the count at 1-2. The ball
was grabbed — and later given to Pujols — by
a man who identified himself as Thomas Sherrill, a 29-year-old Air Force staff sergeant from
Pomona, Calif. “That pitch was supposed to be
low and away,” Jordan said, “and I guess I tried
too hard to get it there.”
Pujols clapped his white batting gloves
together a few strides before reaching home,
then pointed both index fingers to the sky. Fans
gave Pujols a partial standing ovation, and he
tipped his red batting helmet as he approached
the dugout. After heading down the steps, he
came back out for a curtain call.
“That’s something you tell your kids when
you get older. I don’t know the next guy who’s
going to hit 500,” said Angels pitcher Tyler
Skaggs (2-0). “Nobody knows how to react.
You don’t see it too much.”
Teammates said Pujols told shortstop Erick
Aybar before the game he was going to hit two
homers. “Albert’s Albert. If he tells you something, he’s going to do it,” Trout said. “I’m not
surprised he said that, because I’ve seen it before.”
After a couple of down-for-him years with
the Angels following 11 transcendent seasons
with the St. Louis Cardinals, Pujols appears
ready to reclaim his spot among the game’s
elite hitters. He homered Friday and Saturday

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The new members of the Oakland Raiders have heard all the outside critiques: They are too
old, past their primes and far removed from their Pro Bowl years.
The Raiders brought in more than a dozen newcomers so far
this offseason, the majority arriving with a winning pedigree in
their past but viewed to be on the downside of their careers.
The new Raiders convened with the holdovers for the first
time on Tuesday as the team officially started its offseason program with hopes of ending an 11-year playoff drought.
Many arrived with a similar mindset of having something to
prove to their former teams that let them leave and to outsiders
who doubt they can regain their star form.
“We’re just kind of the throwaways, knowing the guys we
have a lot of people didn’t want them,” running back Maurice
Jones-Drew said of the outside perception. “You hear these
reports about this is a great team in 2009. Whatever.”
Jones-Drew was one of the many notable offseason additions
made by general manager Reggie McKenzie, joining quarterback Matt Schaub, receiver James Jones, defensive linemen
Justin Tuck and LaMarr Woodley and cornerbacks Tarell Brown
and Carlos Rogers as players with proven pedigrees but all at
least 29 years old.
Despite their advanced age, Tuck sees no reason why the
new-look Raiders can’t be this year’s turnaround team in the
NFL, like Kansas City a year ago.
“A lot of people say you go to Oakland for your career to
die,” Tuck said. “I’m not looking at it like that. I’m looking at
this like this is an opportunity to revive a storied franchise that’s
in a city with a great fan base that’s going to be behind this football team, and the energy and excitement around this football
team should be great. I’m excited about it.”
Tuck understands that the only way to change the outside
perception of the Raiders is to win games once the season starts.
The Raiders have lost an NFL-worst 123 games over the past
11 years, posting no winning records and earning no playoff
berths since going to the Super Bowl following the 2002 season.
That damaged the reputation of a once-proud franchise and
has made it difficult to attract some of the most desired free
agents, leading to the short-term deals with the aging veterans.
“The impression was they had a lot of talented players but
they couldn’t finish,” Jones said. “Obviously their record speaks
for itself. I wasn’t a part of the team back then but as we talked
today, 4-12 is not good enough. When you play the Raiders in
the past you kind of put that win on the board already. Now
everybody has to look themselves in the mirror and we have to
understand we really don’t get much respect and we’re not going
to get no respect when you’re 4-12.”

Yanks slug Red Sox
for 15 hits in 9-3 win
BOSTON (AP) — Jacoby Ellsbury doubled,
tripled, drove in two runs and made a sliding
catch in his return to Fenway Park, helping the
New York Yankees and Masahiro Tanaka beat
the Boston Red Sox 9-3 Tuesday night.
Ellsbury received a mixed reception in his
first game at Fenway since leaving the Red Sox
to sign a $153 million, seven-year contract with
the Yankees.
Tanaka (3-0) allowed two runs on seven hits
in 7 1-3 innings with seven strikeouts and no
walks. His 35 strikeouts in his first four major
league starts set a team record and he’s walked
just two batters in 29 1-3 innings. Jon Lester
(2-3) struggled after four outstanding outings,
allowing seven runs in 4 2-3 innings.
There were more boos than cheers from the
crowd that contained a sizeable amount of Yankees fans when Ellsbury stepped in as the first
batter of the game.
With an 0-2 count, he drove the ball about
five feet from the top of the center field wall. It
was ruled a triple after a spectator reached out
and interfered with it.
TIGERS 8, WHITE3 SOX 6
DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera hit a
two-run homer, Justin Verlander pitched seven
solid innings and Detroit held on for a victory
over Chicago.
Cabrera was 4 for 23 on this homestand
before going 3 for 5 against the White Sox —
including a homer and a double off Charlie
Leesman (0-1), who was called up from the
minors to start in place of the injured Chris Sale.
Verlander (3-1) had little to worry about after
allowing a first-inning homer to Jose Abreu. He
allowed two runs and eight hits, striking out
seven and walking two.
Chicago’s Dayan Viciedo had a career-high
four hits, and Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer
in the ninth to pull the White Sox within two.
Joba Chamberlain got the final out for his first
save, retiring Alexei Ramirez on a liner to left
with one on.
RAYS 7, TWINS 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — David
Price allowed six hits in his first complete game
of the season, David DeJesus drove in three
runs, and Tampa beat Minnesota. Price (3-1)
struck out 12 in his ninth career complete game.
DeJesus stopped an 0-for-24 skid with an
RBI single during a three-run first and added a
third-inning two-run single.
Kyle Gibson (3-1) gave up seven runs and
10 hits in three-plus innings for Minnesota. The
right-hander had given up just two runs over 19
1-3 innings in his three other starts this year.
The Twins got home runs from Brian Dozier
and Chris Colabello.
RANGERS 5, ATHLETICS 4
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Michael Choice
singled in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning
and Texas rallied to defeat Oakland.
Josh Wilson doubled to drive in the tying run
just ahead of Choice, who began his career with
the A’s. Alexi Ogando (1-1) recorded one out
in the eighth to pick up the win. Joakim Soria
pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
Luke Gregerson (0-1) took the loss after
blowing his third save opportunity, giving up two
runs on three hits. Gregerson appeared to have
pitched out of trouble when he threw out pinch
hitter Mitch Moreland at the plate on a safety
squeeze by Leonys Martin for the second out.
Martin stole second and scored when Wilson,
who cost the Rangers two runs with a fielding
error in the fourth, doubled.
ASTROS 5, MARINERS 2
SEATTLE (AP) — Collin McHugh struck out
a career-high 12 in his season debut, and Jason
Castro, Chris Carter and Matt Dominguez homered to propel Houston past Seattle. McHugh
(1-0) was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City
for the start and struck out the first three batters to
set the tone for his first win in 10 career starts.
The right-hander didn’t walk a batter, giving up
three hits in 6 2-3 shutout innings.
Josh Fields pitched the ninth for his second
save. The Astros have won six straight against
the Mariners. Justin Smoak provided Seattle’s
only offense with a two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Mariners extended their
losing streak to eight games.
ROYALS 8, INDIANS 2
CLEVELAND (AP) — James Shields
allowed two runs in six innings and Mike
Moustakas hit a three-run homer to lead Kansas
City over Cleveland.
Shields (2-2) struck out nine and won his
second straight start.
Moustakas’ homer sparked a four-run fourth
that featured five hits. The Royals are 10-0
when scoring at least four runs.
Eric Hosmer had four hits, including an RBI
double in the seventh.

Apolo Ohno is used to riding a bike in training. Back in his
speedskating days, he might pedal all-out for 30 seconds then
let his legs recover for a bit before repeating the interval. That’s
not exactly great preparation for cycling for 5½ hours. The most
decorated U.S. Winter Olympian in history is taking on a new
athletic challenge: an Ironman triathlon. Ohno plans to compete
at the world championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in October
— swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, then run a marathon.
“I’m still not entirely sure I can grasp the difficulty of this,”
Ohno said in a recent phone interview with The Associated
Press about six weeks into his training. A winner of eight medals
in three Olympics, he certainly knows how to push himself in
workouts. But he’s not accustomed to the sort of pain that comes
with endurance sports. When Ohno goes for a run with one of
his coaches, eight-time Ironman world champion Paula NewbyFraser, his body is ready to stop after about an hour. “Paula’s
just getting warmed up,” he said. She’ll be getting more and
more chatty. He’s fantasizing about calling a car service.
Ohno’s speedskating training was all about performing at his
peak for 80 seconds. The Ironman requires preparing his body to
hold up over the steady grind of more than 11 hours.
Newby-Fraser keeps needing to remind him to slow down in
training. “It sounds easy, but it goes against the instinct and nature
of an athlete that’s used to emptying the tank every day,” she said.
Hines Ward knows how Ohno feels. The former Pittsburgh
Steelers wide receiver trained with Newby-Fraser for last October’s Ironman as part of the same promotional campaign for
chocolate milk. Like Ohno, Ward’s sport was much more about
fast-twitch muscles than stamina. Those long strides that helped
Ward sprint a fast 40-yard dash aren’t effective over 26.2 miles.
Unlike Ward, the 31-year-old Ohno comes in with experience in each of the three disciplines. Along with biking as part
of his speedskating training, Ohno swam competitively until he
was 12. Even better, he ran the 2011 New York City Marathon,
finishing in a very respectable 3 hours, 25 minutes.
Still, his legs will feel very different at the start of the marathon
in Hawaii after the swim and bike. Fitting in time to run during
his busy travel schedule was feasible for Ohno, who makes frequent trips to Asia for his various business ventures. Finding
places to bike and swim — not to mention the extra hours needed
for training three disciplines — is a bit more vexing.
Ohno so far has been doing about 10 hours a week of training.
Newby-Fraser hopes to get that up to 14-16 hours. By July, it
will need to be more like 20 hours. Three-time Ironman world
champion Craig Alexander will also help coach Ohno.
He’s noticed that the training makes him feel mentally sharper
at business meetings. Not that he also doesn’t feel exhausted.
Ohno had bulked up his upper body since last competing at the
2010 Olympics, which isn’t conducive to endurance sports. He
was in decent shape by most people’s standards when he started
his Ironman training. But Ohno’s idea of a good workout before
was going to the gym for less than an hour. His progress will
be documented in an eight-episode online series. Ohno figures it
will capture plenty of failures along the way, but maybe seeing
an elite athlete humbled will inspire others to push their limits.
Ohno has kept plenty busy since Vancouver: hosting “Minute
to Win It” on the Game Show Network, commentating for NBC
at the Olympics. But it’s hard to give up the rush of competition.

Obama congratulates U.S.
winner of Boston Marathon
OSO, Wash. (AP) — President Barack Obama has congratulated Meb Keflezighi (kehf-LEHZH’-gee) on becoming the first
American man in 31 years to win the Boston Marathon.
The White House says Obama telephoned Keflezighi on
Tuesday as Air Force One flew Obama to Washington state to
survey damage from a massive mudslide last month that killed
more than three dozen people.
Keflezighi won Monday’s 26.2-mile race in 2:08:37, one year
after a pair of bombings near the finish line killed three people
and wounded hundreds more.
Keflezighi took to Twitter after Obama’s call to tell his followers, quote, “I have received many congratulatory calls, but I
just received THE call from President @ barackobama.”
30 top prospects to attend
the NFL draft in New York
NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL says 30 top prospects,
including Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and South
Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, will attend the draft
next month in New York.
Among other players scheduled to appear at Radio City
Music Hall include Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater,
Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins and Buffalo linebacker
Khalil Mack. The prospects are expected to be selected in the
first three rounds. The first round will be Thursday, May 8, with
rounds 2-3 the next day.
Baylor Center Isaiah Austin
entering NBA draft early
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor sophomore center Isaiah
Austin has decided to forgo the remainder of his collegiate eligibility to enter the NBA draft. The 7-foot-1 Austin, who has a
prosthetic right eye, averaged 12.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.4
blocks in his 73 games the past two seasons with the Bears.
Bears coach Scott Drew made the announcement Tuesday,
five days before the early entry deadline and just more than a
month after Baylor went the NCAA Sweet 16.
Austin might have been a first-round NBA pick after his
freshman season last summer, but couldn’t do pre-draft workouts because of a torn labrum in his shoulder.
NBA scouts at Baylor games this season said they already
knew about Austin’s eye issue before the player revealed his
blindness publicly in January.
NFL playoff game to air
on cable for first time
NEW YORK (AP) — An NFL playoff game will air on cable
for the first time this season. The league said Tuesday that a
wild-card matchup will be broadcast on ESPN in January. As
with “Monday Night Football,” the game will be simulcast on
local channels in the teams’ home markets.
In the NFL’s new TV deals that start with the 2014 season,
NBC exchanged one of its wild-card matchups for one in the
divisional round. It hasn’t been determined yet whether NBC
will show an AFC or NFC game in January.
Ex-champ Briggs disrupts
Klitschko news conference
DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — Former heavyweight
champion Shannon Briggs disrupted a news conference on
Tuesday ahead of Wladimir Klitschko’s title bout against Alex
Leapai — demanding a fight of his own against the reigning
champion.
Briggs lost a 2010 WBC title bout against Klitschko’s elder
brother Vitali — a fight that left the American hospitalized. He
showed up at a news conference with Klitschko and Leapai and
demanded a title fight against Klitschko in the United States.
Briggs eventually left after being pushed back by security.
Klitschko joked that he had to restrain Leapai, saying “I have
never had to hold back my opponent at a press conference
before.” Klitschko will defend his WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO
heavyweight titles against Australian challenger Leapai in Oberhausen on Saturday.
Illinois basketball player Paul arrested
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — University of Illinois police
say basketball player Darius Paul faces preliminary charges of
resisting a peace officer and unlawful consumption of alcohol
by a minor. Police say they arrested the 20-year-old sophomore early Tuesday on campus. Capt. Roy Acree Police said an
officer spotted two men crossing a parking lot around 3:20 a.m.
The officer lost sight of the two but from her car spotted one a
short distance away.
Acree said the man turned and walked away from the car and
ran when told to stop. Another officer tackled the man. Police
say he said he had been drinking.
Paul could not immediately be reached for comment. Coach
John Groce said he would let the legal process play out before
considering disciplinary action.

Wizards beat Bulls 101-99
in OT to establish 2-0 lead
CHICAGO (AP) — This one looked like it
was slipping away from the Washington Wizards. Then, in a flash everything changed.
Bradley Beal came on strong late in regulation to finish with 26 points, Nene scored six of
his 17 points in overtime and the Wizards beat
the Chicago Bulls 101-99 Tuesday to take a 2-0
lead in their first-round series. Game 3 is Friday
at Washington.
“We’ve got to come out like we’re down
0-1 or 0-2,” said Beal, who scored 11 in the
fourth quarter. “We’ve got to have that sense
of urgency and just that drive and that motivation like we did early. We’ve got to be able to
maintain that lead. We’ve got to continue to
stay poised.”
The Wizards couldn’t maintain a 17-point
first-quarter lead and had to rally from 10 down
in the fourth.
Nene scored the first six points in overtime
after being held in check by Defensive Player
of the Year Joakim Noah in regulation, and the
Wizards hung on after Kirk Hinrich failed to
convert at the foul line in the closing seconds
of overtime.
Noah had just hit two free throws when Beal
missed a jumper with 18 seconds left. Jimmy
Butler got the rebound and Chicago called time.
Hinrich, a 76 percent free throw shooter this
season, had a chance to tie it after getting fouled
by Nene on a drive with 2.4 seconds left. But
his first attempt hit the rim. He deliberately
missed the second, and Trevor Ariza grabbed
the rebound to seal the win for Washington.
“I went up there thinking I was going to
knock them down,” Hinrich said. “Tonight, I
just couldn’t do it. However, I really felt that I
should’ve made the layup.”
D.J. Augustin led Chicago with 25 points but
cooled off late in the game with Ariza guarding
him. Taj Gibson had 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Noah added 20 points and 12 boards, but the
Bulls find themselves in a huge hole after dropping two at home.
They blew a 13-point lead in Game 1 and
couldn’t hang on after rallying in this one. Both
times, they struggled in the fourth quarter, and
coach Tom Thibodeau bristled when asked if he
might switch up his late-game rotation.
“We look at everything,” he said. “Unreal.”
John Wall had 16 points and seven assists for
Washington.
The Bulls appeared to be in good shape when
they were leading 87-77 five minutes into the
fourth. They were still leading, 91-85, when
Beal shot the Wizards back into the game. He
nailed a 3-pointer that made it 91-88 and added
a floater to make it a one-point game. Then, with
a chance to put Washington ahead, he hit 1 of 2
free throws with 52.9 seconds left to tie it at 91.
Both teams had opportunities to win it in the
closing seconds but couldn’t convert.
“I think we did a great job staying calm and
composed,” Wall said. “Early in the season, we
would get rattled and guys would try to make
plays one on one on their own. Tonight, we
trusted in our offense like we’ve been doing.”
The Bulls were leading 87-77 after a driving
layup by Noah and two free throws by Butler
with 6:59 left regulation. But with Beal going
off, the Wizards made a run.
“I can’t take a lot of credit for the fourth
quarter,” said Beal, who scored 11 in the fourth
after quiet second and third quarters. “I think we
got a lot of offensive rebounds and kickouts, and
John hit me on a couple. I was fortunate to be able
to knock down some, and I just stayed with it.

TORONTO (AP) — DeMar DeRozan
scored 30 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 15
points and 14 rebounds and Toronto evened its
first-round playoff series with Brooklyn at one
game apiece.
Amir Johnson scored 16 points and Kyle
Lowry had 14 as the Raptors rebounded from
a 94-87 loss in Game 1. It was Valanciunas’
second straight playoff double-double.
(Continued on page B6)
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Kevin Durant is tired of hearing
about Tony Allen’s defense.
Durant scored 36 points, mostly against Allen, in Oklahoma
City’s loss to Memphis in Game 2 of their first-round playoff
series.
It wasn’t a typical Durant performance, though — he made
just 12 of 28 shots, and his usual smoothness and efficiency were
absent as the Grizzlies beat the Thunder 111-105 in overtime
Monday night to tie the series at a win apiece.
Durant, the NBA’s scoring champion, went on the defensive
Tuesday afternoon. When asked about Allen’s effort, he paused
five seconds and chuckled before answering.
“He’s good,” Durant said. “He’s good at dodging screens.
He’s physical. Everybody plays the same way with me, though.”
When asked about Allen a few minutes later, a more agitated
Durant again paused before responding.
“It’s not like I’m just totally getting locked down,” Durant,
who is averaging 34.5 points in the series, said. “He’s making
it tough. It’s not like I’m just non-existent. I don’t know what
you guys have been watching. He’s just making me work, like
everybody else will.”
Allen has been getting on people’s nerves for years. The
10-year veteran was on the NBA’s All-Defensive first team in
2012 and 2013 and was on the second team in 2011.
Before the series began, Durant called him one of the best
perimeter defenders in the league. Allen gives up 5 inches to the
6-foot-9 Durant, but he makes up for it with toughness, speed,
quickness, strength and unpredictability.
Memphis coach Dave Joerger said Allen executed his part of
Memphis’ game plan against Durant perfectly in Game 2.
Though Durant scored his points, he never found a rhythm.
Tayshaun Prince started the game, but Allen played 35 minutes and got most of the time against Durant. Joerger hopes his
stopper can deliver a repeat performance Thursday in Game 3
in Memphis.
“I know it is a cliché, but you just try to make it tough, and
that’s what he’s doing,” Joerger said of Allen’s performance
against Durant in Game 2. “Trying to make it tough before the
catch — that’s important — to make a guy uncomfortable and
not get it in spots where he’s comfortable.”
Allen said he’s getting a lot of help. The bigs behind him —
7-1, 265-pound Marc Gasol and 6-9, 260-pound Zach Randolph
— clog the lane and erase his mistakes. Gasol was the NBA’s
Defensive Player of the Year in 2013.
“Kevin Durant is the leading scorer in the league, an All-Star,
probably one of the greatest in the game right now,” Allen said.
“But it’s just a competition at the end of the day, and basically, the game is not about me. It’s about the Grizzlies coming
in here and basically playing grit-and-grind basketball, holding
our hat on the defensive end.”
Allen’s teammates allow him to take chances. He got a critical steal in the final minute of regulation against Durant on
Monday and finished the game with four steals.
“As much as Tony is doing on the ball, which is tremendous,
he also has communication behind him,” Joerger said. “Those
guys are telling him: ‘I’ve got your right. I’ve got your left.’
It’s hard to play a guy like that just by yourself out there on an
island, which he does a lot.”
Oklahoma City center Kendrick Perkins, who played with
Allen in Boston, said Allen is underrated. Though Allen averages just 8.1 points per game in his career, that number doesn’t
measure his value to a team.
“He don’t stop,” Perkins said. “He’s going to keep coming.
He’s fast. He’s faster than what a lot of people realize. And he
gets real small on screens, so if you screen him, he does a good
job of getting on a guy’s hip and recovering.”
Allen is known for his willingness to play a physical style,
but Joerger said there is more to his success against Durant than
that.
“I wouldn’t say he is just mugging him all over the place,”
Joerger said. “That’s why I said last night after the game that
‘Try to push him out to spots’ doesn’t mean a physical push. It
can just be dancing sometimes.”
The Thunder say Durant will need to move more, get deeper
position and be more of an attacker to counter Allen’s aggressive play. The Thunder said they could help him by improving
ball movement and setting better screens.
“He’s a great defender,” Perkins said of Allen. “He doesn’t
want the guy to catch the ball, so he’s going to deny, deny, deny.
Once you catch it, you can go to work on him.”

Pujols’ 500th HR helps LA
Angels beat Nationals 7-2
WASHINGTON (AP) — Albert Pujols
became the first major leaguer to hit his 499th
and 500th homers in the same game, driving in
five runs to help the Los Angeles Angels beat
the Washington Nationals 7-2 Tuesday night.
The first baseman connected twice off
Taylor Jordan (0-3) — a three-run homer in the
first inning and two-run drive in the fifth — to
become the 26th player in major league history
to reach the milestone.
Pujols is the first player to collect Nos. 499
and 500 in the same game, according to STATS.
About three months past his 34th birthday, he’s
also the third-youngest to get to 500.
He has eight homers this season, all in the
past 13 games.
Tyler Skaggs (2-0) gave up two runs in seven
innings for the win.
MARLINS 1, BRAVES 0
ATLANTA (AP) — Jose Fernandez
matched his career high with 14 strikeouts in
eight innings and combined with Steve Cishek
on a three-hitter as the Marlins shut out the
Braves.
Fernandez (3-1) outpitched Atlanta’s
Alex Wood (2-3), who also was dominant.
Wood allowed four hits and one run with no
walks and a career-high 11 strikeouts in eight
innings.
The Marlins gave Fernandez the only run
he would need in the fourth. Giancarlo Stanton
hit a one-out double to left field and scored on
Casey McGehee’s single up the middle.
Fernandez struck out the side in the fourth
and fifth innings. He allowed three hits with no
walks. Cishek pitched a perfect ninth for his
fourth save.
CUBS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 2
CHICAGO (AP) — Jason Hammel pitched
seven strong innings, Mike Olt hit a three-run
homer and Nate Schierholtz drove in a pair of
early runs to lead the Cubs to a victory over the
Diamondbacks.
Hammel (3-1) allowed just one run and four
hits in seven innings to lower his ERA to 2.60.
Olt still is batting below .200 for the season
(.195), but has four homers and nine runs
batted in.
The Cubs, who’ve won three of four, have
won back-to-back games for the first time this
season. They last won consecutive games on
Sept. 9 and 10 of last season against the Cincinnati Reds.
Their last consecutive home wins came on
Sept. 4 and 6 against Miami and Milwaukee.
Brandon McCarthy (0-4) managed to lower
his ERA from 7.11 to 6.23. He allowed five runs
— one earned — and seven hits in five innings.
CARDINALS 3, METS 0
NEW YORK (AP) — Adam Wainwright
threw seven neat innings before leaving with a
knee injury, and Jon Jay hit a two-run single that
sent the Cardinals to a victory over the Mets.
Left fielder Matt Holliday robbed Chris
Young of a tying homer, one night after the
Mets played some dazzling defense of their
own to post a shutout in the series opener.
Wainwright (4-1) faced the minimum
through four innings and outpitched Dillon Gee.
It was the second consecutive scoreless start for
Wainwright, who tossed a two-hit shutout last
Thursday at Washington.
PHILLIES 3, DODGERS 2, 10 innings
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Domonic Brown
doubled home the go-ahead run in the 10th
inning after a costly error by left fielder Carl
Crawford, and the Phillies beat the Dodgers.
Carlos Ruiz reached second base when his
flyball to short left field glanced off Crawford’s
glove as shortstop Hanley Ramirez nearly collided with the left fielder. Brown followed with
a drive to the fence in left-center on a 1-1 pitch
from J.P. Howell (1-2).
Antonio Bastardo (3-1) pitched a scoreless
inning for the victory and Jonathan Papelbon
got three outs for his sixth save, putting him
within eight of 300.
REDS 4, PIRATES 1
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Johnny Cueto tossed
his second three-hitter against the Pittsburgh in
a week and the Cincinnati Reds eased past the
struggling Pirates.
Cueto (2-2) struck out four and walked three
while running his career-long scoreless streak
to 21 innings before giving up a home run to
Andrew McCutchen with one out in the ninth.
He improved to 15-4 in his career against the
Pirates and became the first Cincinnati pitcher
to toss consecutive complete games since Mat
Latos did it in June 2012.
Brayan Pena and Zack Cozart had consecutive RBI hits off Edinson Volquez (1-1) in the
seventh to provide all the offense Cueto needed.
Volquez allowed two runs and five hits with
a walk and three strikeouts.

➧ Raiders begin workouts…
Continued from page B1
For the longtime Raiders who have never experienced winning
in Oakland, the changes this offseason provide a major boost of
energy. Fullback Marcel Reece, a team leader, spent plenty of time
recruiting potential free agents and new left tackle Donald Penn
even told him Tuesday that he got tired of all the text messages.
Reece stated before free agency that he wanted McKenzie to
make bold moves and he’s happy with the additions. Reece said
he believes that the championship experience of players like
Tuck and Woodley can only help everyone on the roster.
“Coming in to this free agency as an organization and as a
team and as a leader for myself personally, we weren’t looking
for any saviors to come here and get in this locker room,” Reece
said. “We were looking for help to bring the tradition, the winning attitude and a championship pedigree back to this locker
room and I think we did that.”

at Detroit to lift his total to 498, and now he’s
reached the round number of 500 — a total that
remains hallowed despite losing luster lately
because so many players surpassed it.
Of the 26 members of the 500-homer club, 11
reached the mark in the last 15 years, according
to STATS. Gary Sheffield was the previous
player to do it, hitting No. 500 in April 2009.
“You don’t see 500, obviously, every night,”
Pujols said. “It’s been a great career.”
The Cardinals selected him in the 13th round
of the 1999 draft, and Pujols won a batting title
in 2003, NL MVP awards in 2005, 2008 and
2009, and World Series titles with the Cardinals
in 2006 and 2011. Pujols was the first player to
hit 30 homers in each of his first 12 seasons and
the second — after Al Simmons in 1924-34 —
to reach 100 RBIs in each of his first 10.
A nine-time All-Star, Pujols hit 455 homers
with the Cardinals. “I’m so excited for him.
He’s a great friend of mine and a great teammate of mine over the years,” Cardinals pitcher
Adam Wainwright said. “Nobody deserves it
more than he does, ‘cause he works so hard.”
After his decade-plus of excellence in St.
Louis, Pujols signed a 10-year deal worth
$240 million with the Angels following the
2011 season. Almost immediately, the 6-foot-3
slugger appeared to be slowing down. He hit
.285 with 30 homers in 2012 — impressive
numbers for most players, but career lows at
that point for Pujols.
Things got worse in 2013. Injuries limited Pujols to 99 games and he hit .258 with
17 homers and 64 RBIs. But not surprisingly,
Pujols’ bat did not stay quiet for long. Sitting
at a news conference with the balls he hit over
the fence Tuesday resting near his left elbow,
Pujols smiled as he said: “Now we’ve got to
start on the next milestone, I guess.”

Also Tuesday, Svetlana Kuznetsova beat
Italian qualifier Gioia Barbieri 6-2, 6-3 and
another Russian, Alisa Kleybanova, defeated
Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2, 6-4.
Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova 6-0, 6-4 and Roberta
Vinci had a 6-3, 6-2 win over Annika Beck,
ensuring the 20-year-old qualifier was the first
German knocked out of the tournament.
az. Cardinals player to be
sentenced for assault plea
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington is scheduled to be
sentenced Wednesday for his guilty plea to a
charge that he assaulted a former girlfriend who
is the mother of his daughter.
The 27-year-old pleaded guilty nearly a
month ago in Maricopa County Superior Court
to aggravated assault arising out of a May 1
argument with the child’s mother. Authorities
say Washington choked the woman and caused
a fall that broke her right collarbone.
His possible punishments range from probation to 18 months in jail, though his plea agreement and prosecutors are calling for probation.
Investigators say the argument arose out of a
visit that Washington paid to his daughter at the
apartment where the child’s mother lives. They
say the mother panicked after Washington left
the apartment with the child to go to a restaurant
and wouldn’t answer her calls to his cellphone.
Once the child was back at the apartment
with her mother, police say Washington left
with the mother’s cellphone, prompting her to
run after him and strike his vehicle with a handwoven basket. Washington shoved the woman
as she tried to run toward the driver’s side door
of his vehicle, causing her to hit the ground and
break her right collarbone, police said.

Steelers pick up 5th-year
option on DE Cam Heyward
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh
Steelers have picked up the 2015 option on
defensive end Cam Heyward.
The decision, announced Tuesday, means
Heyward will have to wait two more years before
becoming a free agent. Heyward is coming off
a breakout season in which he finished with a
career-high five sacks while making 13 starts.
The 31st overall selection in the 2011 NFL
Draft is considered a cornerstone of Pittsburgh’s
3-4 defense going forward. The team let Ziggy
Hood walk in free agency and has not re-signed
veteran Brett Keisel.
Sharapova survives scare
to progress at Stuttgart
STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Defending
champion Maria Sharapova survived a firstround scare at the Porsche Grand Prix by
defeating Lucie Safarova 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 7-6(2)
on Tuesday. The sixth-seeded Sharapova
needed three hours, 24 minutes for her 100th
clay victory, three days after her 27th birthday.
Sharapova, who is bidding to win the tournament for the third time in a row, next faces
fellow Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who
defeated Latvian qualifier Diana Marcinkevica
6-3, 6-2. Jelena Jankovic, the no. 5 seed, saved
four match points to come back and claim a 2-6,
7-6 (8), 6-3 win over German lucky loser Mona
Barthel. No. 8 seed Sara Errani recovered from
a double break down in the second set to defeat
Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4
for the Italian’s first win in five visits to Stuttgart.
Danny Salazar (0-3) didn’t allow a hit until the fourth, but
unraveled quickly when Hosmer led off with a single. Billy
Butler followed with another single before Salazar retired the
next two hitters. Moustakas drove a 1-1 pitch into Kansas City’s
bullpen in right field, breaking a 2-for-15 slump.
BLUE JAYS 9, ORIOLES 3
TORONTO (AP) — Brett Lawrie and Melky Cabrera each
hit three-run homers in the eighth inning to power Toronto past
Baltimore. Edwin Encarnacion connected for his first homer of
the season for Toronto, another three-run drive. Lawrie’s long
ball off Evan Meek (0-1) snapped a 3-all tie in front of a sparse
crowd of 14,866 at Rogers Centre. Cabrera connected for his fifth
of the season off Josh Stinson, putting the Blue Jays in front, 9-3.
Esmil Rogers pitched a scoreless ninth for Toronto and
reliever Steve Delabar (2-0) picked up the win to help the Blue
Jays improve to 3-1 against the Orioles this season.

PADRES 2, BREWERS 1, 12 innings
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Chase Headley homered in the top
of the 12th inning and San Diego relievers tossed six shutout
innings in the Padres’ win over the Brewers.
Huston Street retired the side in order in the bottom of the
12th for his seventh save after Donn Roach (1-0) allowed just
one hit over two scoreless innings. Headley’s homer to center
off a 1-0 fastball from Alfredo Figaro (0-1) was one of the few
mistakes from the mound among teams with two of the best staff
ERAs in baseball. Padres starter Ian Kennedy labored through
six innings while Brewers counterpart Yovani Gallardo went
seven strong innings before the bullpens took over.
The Padres’ bullpen allowed three hits and struck out eight to
snap Milwaukee’s four-game winning streak.
ROCKIES 2, GIANTS 1
DENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a go-ahead homer
leading off the fifth and Franklin Morales outdueled Madison
Bumgarner, lifting the Rockies to a win over the Giants.
Troy Tulowitzki also added a solo shot for the Rockies, who
have hit seven homers in two nights against the Giants.
Morales (2-1) was masterful on the mound as he allowed five
hits over seven innings, which matches the longest outing of his
career. The left-hander’s only mistake was a hanging slider to
Hunter Pence in the fifth. It was Pence’s second homer of the
season. LaTroy Hawkins got the final two outs in a rocky ninth
for his sixth save in as many chances.

Joe Johnson scored 18 points, Deron Williams had 15 and
Mirza Teletovic 14 for the Nets, who will host Game 3 on Friday
night. Hampered by foul trouble throughout the game, Brooklyn’s Paul Pierce went 2 for 11 from the field, including 0 for 6
from 3-point range. He finished with seven points.
Kevin Garnett scored 13 points and Shaun Livingston had 12
for the Nets, who led 66-64 heading into the fourth and couldn’t
take advantage of 21 Toronto turnovers.
PACERS 101, HAWKS 85
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Paul George had 27 points, 10
rebounds and six assists, leading Indiana to the victory.
The Pacers and Hawks are tied at a game apiece heading into
Game 3 in Atlanta on Thursday. Reserve Luis Scola added 20
points and seven rebounds for the Pacers. George Hill had all 15
of his points in the second half. Indiana grabbed control with a
25-2 run that carried over into the fourth quarter.
George was especially effective even though he spent much
of the night defending Hawks point guard Jeff Teague, who had
14 points. Paul Millsap finished with 19 for Atlanta.

Bengals’ Dalton compares
himself with the NFL’s best
CINCINNATI (AP) — Andy Dalton isn’t
shying away from the comparisons any longer.
Until now, the Bengals’ fourth-year quarterback has avoided linking his name with some
of the NFL’s best, even as he accomplished
things that few others could claim. That’s
changed with his ongoing negotiations over a
contract extension.
It’s time to accentuate the positives from his
first three seasons.
“Well, I’m very confident in what I’ve
done,” he said. “The people who are the critics,
they look at all of the negatives.
“They don’t look at all of the stuff that I’ve
accomplished. They don’t look at that I’m one
of three quarterbacks in the history of the NFL
to do certain things. They don’t look at that
kind of stuff.
“They want to find ways to tear me down,
but I’m not worried about that. They can say
whatever they want. All that matters is what
everyone believes in this organization and what
I believe in myself.”
There are a lot of rarified numbers he can
cite:
— Dalton, Dan Marino and Peyton Manning
are the only ones to throw 20 or more touchdown passes in each of their first two seasons.
— Dalton is one of only five starting quarterbacks to lead their teams to the playoffs in
each of their first three seasons, along with the
Rams’ Pat Haden, the Dolphins’ Marino, the
Browns’ Bernie Kosar and the Ravens’ Joe
Flacco.
— If the Bengals reach the playoffs again
this season, he’ll join Flacco as the only starting
quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era to reach the
playoffs in each of their first four seasons.
— Dalton has already set numerous franchise records for passing. He threw for a clubrecord 4,293 yards and 33 touchdowns last
season.
The big blemish: 0-3 in the postseason.
Dalton has given some of his worst performances in the playoffs, setting up three straight
opening-round exits.
Dalton is entering the final year on his contract. He’s emphasizing those regular-season
accomplishments while making his case for a
new deal.
“We are obviously comparing guys in their
first three years — what they have done, what
they are doing now, and presenting them with
stuff,” Dalton said. “That is how we have come
up with what we are wanting.”
Who’s the best comparison?
“Let’s see here: Flacco, (Aaron) Rodgers,
(Drew) Brees. Who else? Matt Ryan. All those
top guys,” he said.
His biggest shortcoming also leaves him
in some pretty good company. He’s one of
seven NFL quarterbacks who who have lost
an opening playoff game three seasons in a
row, according to STATS. The others: Warren
Moon (4), Otto Graham (3), Y.A. Tittle (3),
Bert Jones (3), Joe Montana (3) and Randall
Cunningham (3).
“This is a big year,” Dalton said. “Just from
the standpoint of OK, now I’ve been through
it three times now. I’ve played well. I’ve been
to the playoffs. Obviously the playoffs haven’t
gone well for us, but it’s not just me.”
Dalton turned the ball over three times in
the second half of a 27-10 loss to San Diego at
Paul Brown Stadium that extended Cincinnati’s playoff misery. The Bengals haven’t won
a playoff game in 23 years. Their three straight
opening-game losses tie the league record.
Dalton has studied video of the playoff loss
during the offseason.
“We had chances in the game. Obviously the
turnovers killed us,” he said. “I wish I would
have done some things differently in the game.
It didn’t turn out that way. You’ve got to take
the good things that happened last season and
improve on them.”
Coach Marvin Lewis fell to 0-5 in the playoffs but got a year added to his contract, which
now runs through 2015. He has reassured
Dalton privately and insisted publicly that the
quarterback can take the franchise deep into the
playoffs and end all those streaks of futility and
doubts about his ability.
“It means a lot,” Dalton said. “I feel like I’ve
done a lot since being here to earn that trust, to
earn that support.”

pres. Obama: US-Japan treaty
applies to disputed islands
TOKYO (AP) — President Barack Obama
confirmed Wednesday that America’s mutual
security treaty with Japan applies to the islands
at the center of a territorial dispute between
China and Japan.
“The policy of the United States is clear,”
he said in a written response to questions published in Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper before his
arrival in Tokyo at the start of a four-country
Asia tour.
“The Senkaku islands are administered by
Japan” and therefore fall under the U.S.-Japan
treaty, he wrote.
“And we oppose any unilateral attempts
to undermine Japan’s administration of these
islands.”
His statement seems aimed at reassuring
Japan that the U.S. would come to its defense
if China were to seize the islands, known as the
Diayou in China.
Russia’s annexation of Crimea has sparked
concern about America’s political will to protect Asian allies, notably in Japan and the
Philippines.
Obama said the United States is deepening its
ties with China, but “our engagement with China
does not and will not come at the expense of
Japan or any other ally.”
He told the Yomiuri that the U.S. will continue to take steps to reduce the impact of its
military presence in Okinawa, but added “it’s
important to remember that the U.S. Marine
Corps presence on Okinawa is absolutely critical
to our mutual security. It plays a key role in the
defense of Japan.”
NY City’s “fast-lap” driver
arrested for driving again
NEW YORK (AP) — A driver facing criminal charges over a speedy lap around Manhattan
has been caught driving again — after his license
was suspended.
A Manhattan judge raised Adam Tang’s bond
from $10,000 to $25,000 on Tuesday because of
his April 5 arrest in the Bronx.
Defense lawyer Gregory Gomez says Tang
pleaded guilty to unlicensed driving, a traffic
infraction, and paid a fine.
Bronx prosecutors couldn’t provide information on the now-sealed case.
Gomez declined to comment on why Tang
was driving.
In September, Tang was arrested after a dashboard-camera video showed a BMW making a
26.4-mile loop around Manhattan in 24 minutes
and 7 seconds. His license was suspended as a
bail condition.
Tang has pleaded not guilty to reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor.
Gomez has said there’s no proof Tang acted
recklessly.
Navy veteran, 92, finally
gets military medals
WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — A 92-year-old
military veteran has gotten long-overdue medals
he earned for serving in the Navy during World
War II. Rhode Island’s U.S. Sen. Jack Reed presented Frank Poli with several awards Tuesday
in the military lounge at T.F. Green Airport. The
awards include the Navy Good Conduct Medal,
the World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
Poli was honored for his “exemplary conduct,
efficiency and fidelity” while on active duty.
Reed is a former Army Ranger. He says it’s
important to remind veterans their sacrifices
haven’t been forgotten.
Poli lives in Providence. He was 21 years old
when he enlisted in 1942. A spokesman for Reed
says delays aren’t uncommon because veterans
often returned from war and didn’t seek recognition, or the paperwork was lost.
Ebola outbreak death toll in
West Africa over 140
DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The World Health
Organization says the current Ebola outbreak in
West Africa has killed more than 140 people.
The Ebola disease causes a high fever and
internal and external bleeding. There is no cure
and no vaccine and it has a high fatality rate.
In a statement on its website Tuesday, the
U.N. health agency said at least 230 suspected or
confirmed cases of Ebola have been recorded so
far in Guinea and Liberia. Most of the cases are in
Guinea. The statement said 129 deaths in Guinea
and 13 in Liberia have been linked to the disease.
The outbreak is highly unusual as the disease is
typically found in central or eastern Africa.
Pirates rob Japanese diesel
tanker in Malacca Strait
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Pirates
raided a Japanese tanker in the Malacca Strait
and pilfered several million liters of diesel fuel
it was carrying, Malaysian marine police said
Wednesday. A marine police officer said the
tanker was sailing from Singapore to Myanmar
when it was boarded by pirates armed with pistols
and machetes early Tuesday. He said most of the
crew members were tied up and locked in a room.
The officer, who declined to be named as he is
not authorized to speak to the media, said another
tanker appeared and an estimated 3 million liters,
of the 5 million liters of diesel on board the Japanese ship, were transferred over a span of several
hours. He said three Indonesian crew members
were missing along with their passports and
belongings. The Star newspaper quoted senior
marine police commander Norzaid Muhammad
Said as saying the ship was intercepted off Klang
port, outside Kuala Lumpur. Norzaid told the
newspaper the three Indonesians were believed
to have been kidnapped.

british Royals get
Aboriginal gifts in
Australian Outback
SYDNEY (AP) — Britain’s
Prince William and his wife,
Kate, received a traditional
Aboriginal welcome to the Australian Outback on Tuesday.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the tiny town of
Yulara, near the bright red
sandstone monolith Uluru, also
known as Ayers Rock.
Members of a local Aboriginal community performed a
traditional song and dance for
the royal couple at a cultural
center. Locals presented the
pair with gifts of jewelry and
a wooden spear, and William
and Kate presented certificates
to students graduating from an
indigenous training academy.
Later, the Duke and Duchess
watched the sun set over Uluru.
William, Kate and baby Prince
George are on a three-week tour
of New Zealand and Australia.
Prof: Ferry turned
further than 3rd
mate ordered
MOKPO, South Korea (AP)
— A maritime professor who
spoke with the third mate who
was steering the South Korean
ferry before it sank says he
suspects a problem with
the steering gear caused the
sinking. Professor Kim WooSook of Mokpo National Maritime University is a former
teacher of the third mate, Park
Han-gyeol. She was arrested
Saturday in connection with
the accident, which left 300
people dead or missing.
Kim talked to Park at a
Mokpo detention facility. He
says she told him she ordered a
helmsman to make a 5-degree
turn, but the steering gear
turned too far and the helmsman
could not turn it back. Tracking
data show that the ship made
a 45-degree turn. Prosecutors
are examining the turn as try to
determine the disaster’s cause.
Anti-Obama protesters clash with
police in Manila
MANILA, Philippines (AP)
— Philippine police armed
with truncheon, shields and
water hose clashed Wednesday
with more than 100 left-wing
activists who rallied at the U.S.
Embassy in Manila to oppose
a visit by President Barack
Obama and a looming pact
that will increase the American
military presence in the Philippines. Riot policemen blocked
the flag-waving activists near
the heavily fortified embassy
compound but the protesters
slipped past them, sparking a
brief scuffle in view of motorists stuck in traffic.
The police sprayed the protesters with water from a fire
truck to push them away. A
police officer was punched in
the face in the melee but no
arrests were made. Some of
the protesters carried paper
U.S. flags with the message:
“Obama, not welcome.”

Globe had fourth
hottest March; US
cooler than normal
WASHINGTON (AP) —
Federal forecasters calculated
that for most of the Earth, last
month was one of the hottest
Marchs on record — except in
the United States. The National
Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration said Tuesday
that it was the fourth hottest
March in 135 years of records.
The overall global temperature
was 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit (0.7
degree Celsius) warmer than
the 20th century average.
But in the United States,
March was about a degree
cooler than normal, or about a
half a degree Celsius. It was the
43rd coolest March on record.
Slovakia had its hottest March
on record while South Korea
and Latvia had their second
warmest. Northern Siberia was
9 degrees (5 C) warmer than
normal. Norway and Denmark
averaged nearly 7 degrees (4 C)
warmer than normal.
Anchorage airport
police lose track
of explosive
ANCHORAGE (AP) —
Police at the Anchorage airport
lost track of a small quantity
of explosives used for training
bomb-sniffing dogs.
The explosive was attached to
a rental car that a customer drove
away Monday at Anchorage
International Airport. Airport
Police and Fire Chief Jesse
Davis tells KTUU the explosive
was recovered Monday afternoon in the Anchorage area. He
says the amount of explosives
in the vehicle was small and
didn’t pose a threat to the driver
or the public. The department
is reviewing policies to make
sure officers don’t lose track of
explosives again.
Court upholds
traffic stop based
on anonymous tip
WASHINGTON (AP) —
The Supreme Court says an
anonymous tip can be sufficient
to justify a decision by police to
pull a car over on suspicion of
reckless or drunken driving. The
justices voted 5-4 Tuesday to
uphold a traffic stop in northern
California in which officers subsequently found marijuana in
the vehicle. The officers themselves did not see any evidence
of reckless driving.
Justice Clarence Thomas
said the tip phoned in to 911
that a Ford pickup truck had run
the caller off the road was sufficiently reliable to allow for the
traffic stop without violating the
driver’s constitutional rights.
Justice Antonin Scalia wrote
the dissent in which he called
Thomas’ opinion “a freedomdestroying cocktail.”
New Jersey school
sued over ‘under
God’ in pledge
FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) —
A family is suing a New Jersey
school district, contending that
the phrase “under God” in the
Pledge of Allegiance discriminates against atheist children.
The lawsuit against the
Matawan-Aberdeen Regional
School District was filed in
state court last month and was
announced Monday by the American Humanist Association. The
group says the phrase, added in
1954, “marginalizes atheist and
humanist kids as something less
than ideal patriots.” The anonymous plaintiffs say those two
words “under God” violate the
state constitution.
But school district lawyer
David Rubin says the district
is merely following a state law
that requires schools to have a
daily recitation of the pledge.
He says individual students
don’t have to participate.
The humanist group is
awaiting a ruling from a court on
a similar case in Massachusetts.
Alleged gunman shot
by Riverside deputy
MENIFEE, Calif. (AP) —
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department says a man
has been killed after pointing a
gun at deputies. Authorities say
deputies were called to a home
in Menifee Monday night to
check on a man’s welfare and
found him in the garage.
Deputies offered assistance
but they say the man refused
and instead pointed a handgun
at them. At least one deputy
opened fire, hitting the man,
who died at the scene. His name
hasn’t been released.
Thieves steal
rhino horns in
South Africa
JOHANNESBURG (AP)
— In a nighttime theft, robbers broke into a South African
provincial parks office with a
24-hour security service and
used a machine tool called a
grinder to break into a safe
holding a stockpile of rhino
horn worth a fortune on the
illegal market in parts of Asia.
The weekend heist in the city
of Nelspruit was a blow to efforts
to curb the clandestine trade in
rhino horn, which has surged in
recent years despite an increase
in funding for anti-poaching
efforts in South Africa, home
to the majority of the world’s
rhinos. On Tuesday, investigators from the police analyzed the
crime scene at the Mpumalanga
Tourism and Parks Agency,
and officials were exploring the
theory that it was an inside job.
The robbery occurred Saturday, Ramaloko said. The parks
agency later said in a statement
that 112 “pieces of rhino horns”
weighing a total of about 80 kilograms were taken, and that security staff discovered the break-in
early Monday. According to estimates, a kilogram of rhino horn
has a street value in a consumer
country of tens of thousands of
dollars, meaning that the haul
could be worth several million
dollars to illicit traders.

to exercises in
Eastern Europe
WASHINGTON (AP) —
U.S. Army paratroopers are
arriving in Poland to begin a
series of military exercises in
four countries across Eastern
Europe to bolster allies in the
wake of Russia’s annexation of
Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula
last month. Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby
said Tuesday that the exercises
will last about a month, and initially involve about 600 troops.
An Army company of about
150 soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team
based in Vicenza, Italy, will
start the exercises Wednesday
in Poland. Additional Army
companies will head to Estonia,
Latvia and Lithuania and are
expected to arrive by Monday
for similar land-based exercises
in those countries.
Under the current plan, U.S.
troops would rotate in and out of
the four countries for additional
exercises on a recurring basis.
The exercises are part of an
effort announced last week by
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel
aimed at reassuring NATO
allies of America’s commitment
to the region’s defense.
2 teens killed in
Paraguay juvenile
prison riot
ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP)
— Two teenage inmates are
dead after a riot broke out at a
juvenile prison in Paraguay, and
two guards have been arrested
for allegedly using lethal force.
Justice Vice Minister Ever
Martinez says the riot started
Monday night when a group of
inmates set fire to mattresses at
the prison in Itaugua, about 30
kilometers (19 miles) east of
Paraguay’s capital, Asuncion.
A 16-year-old boy and a
17-year-old boy were killed.
Another 16-year-old escaped.
Martinez told reporters
Tuesday that the guards apparently opened fire on the inmates
with live ammunition, violating
rules that require the use of
rubber bullets at juvenile prisons.
Two guards have been arrested.
Itaugua police commissioner
Edgar Silguero said the rioters
were apparently demanding
more TV time at the prison.
Pakistan’s army
seeks closure
of TV channel
ISLAMABAD (AP) — A
Pakistani official says the army
has sought to shut down the
country’s leading Geo News
TV channel. The official,
Fakhruddin Mughal, says a legal
team of the Pakistan Electronic
Media Regulation Authority
is meeting on Wednesday to
examine the army’s request.
Mughal says that Pakistan’s
defense ministry filed a complaint against the TV.
A copy of the complaint was
posted on the website of the
Committee to Protect Journalists. It says the army wants the
station closed because it allegedly carried on a “false and
scandalous campaign” against
Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, or the ISI. The TV
has run accusations against the
spy agency, blaming it for an
“assassination attempt” against
the station’s popular talk show
host, Hamid Mir, who was shot
and wounded last week.
Soldier faces
hearing in killings
of Iraqi boys
JOINT BASE LEWISMcCHORD, Wash. (AP) — A
U.S. soldier accused of deliberately killing two unarmed
teenage boys as they herded
cattle in Iraq seven years ago
is due in military court. Sgt.
1st Class Michael Barbera has
been charged with premeditated
murder and faces a mandatory
life sentence if convicted. He
is set for a preliminary hearing
Wednesday at Joint Base LewisMcChord in Washington state.
The Army has released
few details about the allegations against him. The March
2007 killings were documented in a 2012 investigation
by Pittsburgh newspaper The
Tribune-Review, which said
soldiers who served with Barbera had reported the slayings
and remained troubled that he
hadn’t been prosecuted.
It isn’t clear if Barbera has
a civilian lawyer in addition
to military defense attorneys.
Barbera was most recently stationed at Joint Base ElmendorfRichardson, Alaska.
Israeli army
“invites” Arab
Christians to join
JERUSALEM (AP) — The
Israeli military says it is inviting
young Arab-Israeli Christians to
enlist. The minority historically
views itself as part of the Palestinian people and considers
service in the army as taboo.
But a recent push by a Greek
Orthodox priest to persuade
more Christians to enlist has set
off an emotional debate. Father
Gabriel Nadaf said Christians
must serve in the army if they
want to integrate into Israeli
society and win access to jobs.
The officer in charge of the
army’s campaign, Col. Gal BenShaul, says Tuesday the army
will now send out invitations
to Arab Christians interested in
joining. Military service is mandatory for Jews. Israeli Arabs
make up just over one-fifth of
Israel’s 8 million people. Of
those about 128,000, or less
than 10 percent, are Christians.
230 girls abducted in
Nigeria still missing
CHIBOK (AP) — A week
after Islamic extremists stormed
a remote boarding school in
northeast Nigeria, more than
200 girls and young women
remain missing despite a “hot
pursuit” by security forces and
an independent search by desperate fathers who headed into
a dangerous forest to find their
daughters. At Chibok, the scene
of the attack, weeping parents
cried on Monday, begging the
kidnappers to “have mercy on
our daughters,” and for the government to rescue them. “I have
not seen my dear daughter, she is
a good girl,” cried Musa Muka,
whose 17-year-old Martha was
taken away. “We plead with the
government to help rescue her
and her friends; we pray nothing
happens to her.”
Although at least 200 remain
missing, dozens of the students
managed to escape their captors, jumping from the back
of an open truck after they were
kidnapped in the pre-dawn
hours of Tuesday last week or
by running away and hiding in
the dense forest.
The number who escaped
depends on whom you speak to
— 39, 43, maybe more than 50.

Jet “stowaway” undetected
for hours before departure
HONOLULU (AP) — A 15-year-old stowaway who survived a flight over the Pacific in a
jet’s wheel well spent seven hours undetected in
what is supposed to be a highly secure area of
San Jose International Airport before the flight
departed, according to an official briefed on the
investigation. The law enforcement official told
The Associated Press on Tuesday that video surveillance shows the boy on the airfield a little after
1 a.m. Sunday, walking on the tarmac and near
airplanes in fenced and guarded areas. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about
the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.
While it’s not clear how the teen spent all that
time, FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu
said the teen was sleeping in the plane before the
8 a.m. PDT takeoff. He “literally just slept on the
plane overnight,” Simon said.
High altitude and low temperatures knocked
him out during the 5 1/2-hour flight; he didn’t
regain consciousness until an hour after the plane
landed in Hawaii, Simon said. Medical experts
have said the boy may have survived the subzero
temperatures and thin air of the plane’s 38,000foot cruising altitude because his body went into
a hibernation-like state. When the landing gear
of a Boeing 767 retracts, there is little room to
maneuver in the wheel well. The boy would have
had to curl up in the fetal position or crouch down
the entire time. And there is no way to get into
the main cabin or luggage compartment without
removing large pieces of the aircraft’s interior,
said Jon Day, general manager of Southern California Aviation, a maintenance yard in Victorville, Calif., that handles commercial jets.
The boy was resting Tuesday at a Honolulu
hospital. Hawaii’s Department of Human Services said child welfare officials were arranging
his safe return to Northern California.
Meanwhile, investigators were struggling to
find out how the San Jose airport’s post-9/11
security could have been so easily breached.
Besides video surveillance, the airport has
German shepherds and Segway-riding police
officers and is surrounded by fences, although
many sections do not have barbed wire and could
easily be scaled. The incident “raises serious
concerns affecting passenger safety,” said U.S.
Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., who is asking the
Government Accountability Office to assess airport perimeter safety nationwide. The Transportation Security Administration said it has spent
$80 billion on aviation security since its inception, shortly after the 9/11 attacks. That includes
baggage and passenger screening, but not perimeter security, which is the responsibility of local
authorities. San Jose airport officials declined to
answer questions about their security budget.
Swalwell said San Jose airport officials told
him Tuesday they were still reviewing video
from before dawn Sunday because there are multiple feeds from many cameras at the 1,050-acre
airport. Simon, at the FBI, said video they’ve
found so far shows the teen right after he scaled
the fence and going toward the plane.
The boy has not been charged with a crime, but
much about him — including his identity and his
motivation — remained a public mystery. Media
were camped outside a Santa Clara, Calif., home
where his family purportedly lives, but no one
came out Tuesday. Authorities haven’t released
the boy’s name, but Jennifer Dericco, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clara Unified School District, said that he attends school in the district.
The FAA says about one-quarter of the 105
stowaways who have sneaked aboard flights
worldwide since
1947 have survived. Some
© 2014
wheel-well stowaways survived deadly cold and
a lack of oxygen because their breathing, heart
rate and brain activity slow down.
US Sen. Schatz asks United
Airlines to keep jobs
HONOLULU (AP) — US Sen. Brian Schatz
is asking officials at United Airlines not to outsource about 220 jobs in Hawaii.
Schatz announced Tuesday that he sent a
letter to the CEO of United saying he would do
everything in his power to protect those jobs.
United Airlines notified employees in March
that the company is considering the possibility of
outsourcing jobs at Lihue, Kahului, and KailuaKona airports. United Spokeswoman Christen
David says the airline hasn’t made any decisions. She says the airline is in discussions with
the union and is looking for ways to run a more
efficient business. But Schatz says United promised in congressional hearings that it would not
cut jobs as a result of its 2010 merger with Continental Airlines. He says the airline’s recent decision contradicts those promises.
Cause of death at issue
in death of Hawaii child
HONOLULU (AP) — A defense lawyer for
a former soldier accused of punching his 5-yearold daughter to death said Tuesday an autopsy
showed evidence of lasting injuries that weakened the girl before she died.
A federal prosecutor countered during closing
trial arguments that medical exams proved that
40-pound Talia Williams died of head trauma
when her father struck her in the chest, dislocating her shoulder and knocking her to the floor.
The arguments illustrated how defense
attorney John Philipsborn and prosecutor Steven
Mellin disagree on the child’s cause of death.
The jury begins deliberation Wednesday.
Defendant Naeem Williams and the girl’s
stepmother, Delilah Williams, have acknowledged beating, confining and restraining the girl
in the seven months before her death in 2005.
Fractures in the girl’s ribs were consistent with
a stomping, Philipsborn said. The girl also had a
lacerated liver and bleeding in her abdomen.
Delilah Williams, who made a deal with prosecutors in exchange for testimony against her
husband, previously said on the witness stand
that she once stomped the child until she felt bone
crack. However, federal prosecutors argued that
medical exams showed little evidence that the
previous abuse would have led to the girl’s death.
The defense “wants you to find him not guilty
because her countless injuries make it more difficult to prove the final death blow,” Mellin told
the jury. If convicted, Naeem Williams could
face the death penalty.
Choosing the “Hawaii state”
instrument proves difficult
HONOLULU (AP) — The decision to name
a state instrument in Hawaii is proving more difficult than some lawmakers expected.
At first, it seemed a proposal to give the title
to the ukulele it was going to be an easy bill to
pass. But then fans of the steel guitar and instruments like the ipu gourd made a case that their
sounds should represent Hawaii. Now, with less
than two weeks left in the legislative session,
lawmakers are trying to find a way to please
everyone before they run out of time.
“It’s surprising that with all the huge, substantive bills that we’re discussing here, ukulele is one
of the more controversial bills this Legislative session,” said Sen. Glenn Wakai, D-Kalihi, chairman
on the Senate side of the bill’s conference committee. “I think the public feels strongly about
what they feel should be a designated anything.
Whether it’s a ukulele, bird, flower, color or smell,
people have strong opinions about those issues.”
To please more musicians, lawmakers are
considering naming one “ancient” instrument
and one “modern” instrument, he said. That
could leave room for both the steel guitar and
ukulele lobbies to have their way.

CERTAIN COCKTAIL By Gary Cooper
Happy Birthday: Take action; don’t wait for
others to do things for you. Stand tall and do
whatever needs to be done. Learn from experience and take on whatever challenge comes
your way. Helping others may frustrate you, but
reserving judgment and containing your anger
will be what leads to your success and recognition. Less talk and more action will seal the deal.
Your numbers are 10, 12, 17, 23, 34, 39, 45.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Playful action will
draw positive attention. A change in a relationship will bring you closer together. Don’t let peer
pressure or someone’s jealousy stand between
you and your happiness. Consistency will help
you avoid interference and establish greater
security. ✸✸✸✸
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Do your research,
learn all you can and discuss your options with
someone you trust to give you solid suggestions.
Don’t let anyone make you feel guilty. Do what
you can, but put your personal responsibilities
first. ✸✸
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Stay on top of
what others are doing. Taking action in order
to ensure that whatever job you are assigned
is done to the best of your ability will keep you
out of trouble and deter someone from trying to
make you look bad. ✸✸✸✸✸
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Look over your
personal papers and confirm any documentation
that has been requested. Don’t feel obliged to
honor a favor if what’s being asked of you is not
within reason. Establish your position by being
honest about the way you feel. ✸✸✸
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Keep moving. The less
time you have to indulge in melodramas at work
or at home, the better. Focus on personal change
that will enable you to get ahead. A short trip will
lead to valuable information. ✸✸✸
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Use your head and
network all you can. The connections you make
will help you find your niche. Exploring interesting
concepts with someone unique will lead to a close
relationship that will enable you to improve your
position and your reputation. ✸✸✸
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): A change of plans
must not upset you. Follow through regardless
of what others do. Interact with people you meet
along the way and you will discover how much
you have to offer. Don’t let an emotional relationship hold you back. ✸✸✸✸✸
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Avoid emotional
encounters. Focus on creative endeavors and
short trips that will add to your cultural awareness. Love is in the stars, and romance will help
to ease any stress you’ve been harboring. Selfimprovement will boost your confidence. ✸✸
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Honesty
will be required if you want to avoid an emotional setback with someone close to you.
You are best to consider making positive
changes at home. Physical activities will help
ease tension and boost your confidence and
your reputation. ✸✸✸✸
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Set your
plan in motion, but don’t interfere in what others
are doing. Keeping the peace will buy you the
freedom you need to do your own thing. Doing
more and saying less will be your ticket to success. ✸✸✸
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Look at the
past and use what you experienced in order to
reach your future goals. A change in the way
you earn your living or make your money work
for you will bring benefits that will stabilize your
life. ✸✸✸
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Strive to secure
and stabilize your personal, financial and emotional life. Explore creative avenues and join
forces with people you know can contribute to
what you want to do. Reconnect with someone
you miss and want back in your life. ✸✸✸
Birthday Baby: You are insightful, factual and
traditional. You are powerful and outspoken.
Dear Abby
by Abigail Van Buren
MARRIED COUPLE’S SEX LIFE HAS BECOME ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS
DEAR ABBY: I have been married to a wonderful man for 30 years. Our marriage may not be
perfect, but it’s quite good. My dilemma is this:
My husband keeps track of every time we have
sex and has a personal goal of 100 times a year.
In 2013, he informed me that we’d had sex only
76 times, and that was not adequate for him. He
was quite upset about it.
Do you think tracking your sex life is normal,
and what do you think about a couple married
for 30-plus years having sex 76 times in a year?
Is that normal? Also, keep in mind that he travels
for business and is gone about 60 days a year.
-- PRESSURED
DEAR PRESSURED: Your husband sounds
like a college student who is striving to get 100
notches on his belt. Rather than obsess about
the number of times you have had sex, the
quality of the experience should be more important. Fifty GREAT times a year would be better
than 100 so-so times, one would think. And no,
I do not think your husband’s preoccupation is
“normal” -- whatever normal is these days.

DEAR ABBY: After six years of unsuccessful
fertility work, my husband and I were forced to
give up. Last summer his sister offered to be a
surrogate for us, and we’ll use a donor egg since
I have none. We have told only a few people.
We’re having an embryo transfer next week
and thought we’d wait until after the first trimester
to “announce.” But what is the proper way to do
it when it’s not actually I who is expecting? And
is there etiquette for having a baby shower in this
situation? We’re excited and proud of this opportunity, but it takes a lot of explaining for people
to understand and not be judgmental. This is the
closest we’ll ever get to experiencing pregnancy,
and I want to enjoy it to the fullest. -- MODERN
MOM-TO-BE IN WASHINGTON
DEAR MOM-TO-BE: Congratulations on
your pregnancy. Because it takes explaining, I
recommend you share the happy news with your
family and close friends by telling them in person.
That way, you can answer any questions they
may have directly. When you want “the world” to
know, you may decide to send a mass email or
post photos on the Internet.
As to having a baby shower -- because this
is a happy event you are celebrating and you will
need things for the baby, I’m sure a friend will
want to host one for you. Be sure to include your
sister-in-law if she would like to attend.

DEAR ABBY: My 18-year-old granddaughter is
seeing a 30-year-old man. What can I say to let her
know he is way too old for her? I don’t want her to
hate me. -- LOVING GRANDMA IN FLORIDA
DEAR LOVING GRANDMA: I don’t think that
telling your granddaughter the man is too old for
her would be a good idea because it would imply
that she is too young, and no 18-year-old wants
to hear that. Tell her instead that you think she
would have a lot more in common with someone
closer to her age. This is particularly true if she is
still in high school.
