Y.-TUESDAY, MARCH » , PAGE* Babiarz: AU-American Guy For the third consecutive year, a Potsdam College men's basketball player has been named first team Division III Ail-American In balloting of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Junior guard Steve Babiarz, of YorkvUle, N.Y., was named first team Ail-American March 23. Babiarz is the eighth basketball Ail-American under coach Jerry Welsh, Joining other Bears legends Mike Deane (1974), Ed Jachim (1980, 1981), Derrick Rowland (1980,1981), Mo Woods (1982), Leroy Witherspoon (1983, 1984), Roosevelt (Pony) Bullock (1986) and Brendan Mitchell (1986, 1987) among the nation's elite. Also named to the 1988 NABC first team All-American squad were Greg Grant (Trenton State), Kermit Sharp (Clark), Lou Stevens (Widener) and Scott Tedder (Ohio Wesleyan). Babiarz broke three longstanding Potsdam scoring records this year while leading the Bears to another stellar campaign (25-5). He averaged 22.3 points a game, breaking Rowlands 1978-79 21.1 mark. His 669 points also surpassed Rowland's 655 points, set in 1978-79. The 6'0" guard also broke Deane's 15-year single game scoring record (42) when he poured in 43 points Jan. 17 at Binghamton State. Welsh Named Coach Of Year Potsdam College men's basketball coach and Director of Athletics Jerry Welsh has been named Small College Coach of the Year by Basketball Times magazine for the second consecutive year. Welsh guided his youthful (one senior) Bears to a fine 25-5 record in 1987-88, running his consecutive 20-win season mark upto10. The Potsdam Bears won the SUNYAC East regular season title for the 12th year in a row and earned an NCAA Division III post-season berth for the 11th straight time. With his 19th year as head coach of the Bears completed, Welsh's career record stands at 422-124. Basketball Times also named Potsdam junior guard Steve Babiarz to its first team Division III AU-American list.
