How to use the respect4me website
Respect4me.org is an interactive website that
young women can use to think about staying
safe in the community.
www.respect4me.org
The main part of the website is the 15 stories
young people can watch.
The stories cover issues such as:
• Bullying at work
• Going to a party
• Meeting a boy you met on the internet
• Being approached by a stranger
The aim of the stories is to help young people think
what choices they might make in these situations
Each story is made up of 4 short films
• The first film is the introduction.
This sets the scene for the story
• Then there are films of the 3 different
choices the actress in the film makes
in the story. (One story only has 2 choices).
You can watch all 3 choices and then decide which choice you think is the best choice.
The idea is to encourage young people to make their own
choices and then discuss these with other students and teachers to
help them think about whether their choice was a good choice.
There is also a vox pop film for each story. This is another
short film where 2 or 3 young people give their views about
what they would do in the story.
Watching the vox pop can help the young person make up
their mind about which they think is the best choice.
It’s important that the young person using the website
records which choices they think are the best choices
for each story. To make this easy we have designed a
form that can be printed off from the website.

The Introduction
When you first go to www.respect4me.org you are shown the introduction
At the start of the introduction you can choose which language you want to watch
the introduction in. Choose your language by either clicking on the UK, Swedish
or Italian flag.
You also have the option to skip the intro.
If you’ve seen it before you may want to skip the intro.
If you choose English as your
language you are shown the
English version of the animated
introduction. This is of Jasmine
at the airport going to a Daphne
conference in Brussels.
If you have chosen Swedish or Italian
as your language then the film shows
Madeleine or Maria at the airport.
The animation moves on to show how
Jasmine, Madeline and Maria met at
a Daphne conference in Brussels.
• They decided to design a website that
shows young women facing difficult
situations in the community.
• They chose to use video to tell the stories,
and chose actresses who look a little bit like
them to play them in the stories.
• They feel it is important that young women
think about these situations and what might
be the best choices to make.
• After watching the introduction, or after
choosing to skip the introduction you are
asked to choose which language you want
to use on the website.
You can choose Swedish, Italian or English.
Just click on the flag to make your choice.

Navigating the website
We want young people to use the website as independently as possible, and
understand that some young people may find reading difficult
We have made the buttons on
the website rollover buttons.
This means when your mouse
hovers over a button a picture will
appear in the speech bubble of the
character to help you understand
what that button is for.
For example if you hover over the ‘print form’ button an image of a printer
will appear in the speech bubble.
Using the stories
The stories can be used in a number of ways:
•
By a group of students with the support of a teacher
•
By a student on their own
•
By a student with support from a teacher or other person
It is important to print off the form that the young person can
use to record their choices for each story. If you do not have a
printer connected to the computer you are using then it’s Ok
to use a pen and paper instead.
The introduction for story one is in the video screen on the homepage.
This means people can get started straight away.
The play button is large and in the video screen so is easy to use. After the introduction has played
the video screen shows the following message ‘Now watch A, B and C to see which choice you
think is best’
The user can then click either of the following buttons to view the other video clips related to this
story
• watch A
• watch B
• watch C
• vox pop

If the user wants to watch the intro to this story
again they can click the ‘Intro’ button.
Navigating the website
When the user clicks ‘next story’ a window pops up that asks them a question
‘Have you watched all 3 choices and
marked which choice you think is best?’
The young person has to click to answer
either YES or NO
• If the user clicks ‘YES’ they go to the next story.
• If they choose ‘NO’ they go back to the
introduction of the story they were leaving.
It is important that the young person records
the choices they think are best for each story
as this can used for discussion later.
A few things to think about before using respect4me.org
