Father’s Day Blessing God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless all these fathers, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Recently I was at a meeting of the Deans of the Diocese and the Auxiliary Bishops with some staff people from the Diocesan Pastoral Center. When discussing the upcoming Fortnight For Freedom, the General Counsel of the Diocese spoke very powerfully regarding the slow, but steady erosion of religious liberty in the United States. This is something that is very real and a problem that we should be concerned about. As Cardinal Dolan has said, “We have become certain of two things: Religious Freedom is under attack, and we will not cease in our struggle to protect it.” The Fortnight For Freedom is a time to pray and fast for continued religious freedom in our nation. Consider coming to Mass on the first day of the Fortnight, June 21st, and on the last day, July 4th. On June 29th, Catholics for Freedom of Religion will co-sponsor a rally, “Religious Freedom: Our 1st Amendment Right” from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip. Consider attending. Father Allan Sikorski After serving five years here at St. Mary’s, Father Sikorski will leave us for his new parish and second priestly assignment at St. Matthew’s in Dix Hills on Wednesday, June 26th. Next Sunday, June 23rd, Father will celebrate the 10:30 AM Mass. A reception in his honor will follow in the Marian Room. Come to thank Father for his ministry among us. God Bless! Abortion Expansion Legislation To keep up with the latest about the bill introduced in the New York State Assembly and Senate which in addition to positive points to enhance the dignity of women would allow late term abortions, please check the website of the New York State Catholic Conference, nyscatholic.org, or the website of the Long Island Catholic, licatholic.org. Msgr. John J. McCann The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time | June 16, 2013 Stewards of God’s Gifts St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that “I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me.” What do we give to and do for others? What do we give to and do for Jesus? We are grateful this week for stewards in our parish who give of themselves by sharing their gifts through prayer groups, healing and consolation ministries. About 200 of our 600 families re-registered by June 3rd. Those students are being placed in classes by date of registration. If you have not re-registered, please do so as soon as possible. There are 30 classes on Monday night and we have 18 catechists for those classes so far. Therefore, we are in need of more adult volunteers to teach. If you make the commitment to teach now, we can help you to prepare during the summer. Together we can give our children an opportunity to grow in their prayer life, knowledge of God, and understanding of how to live as a follower of Christ. Lighthouse Catholic Media CD of the Week: The Virgin Mary Revealed Through Scripture Drawing on his roots as a Protestant minister, Dr. Scott Hahn responds to key misunderstandings about the Virgin Mary. This captivating presentation explains the biblical and historical basis for the Church’s teachings that the Virgin Mary is the New Eve and the Queen of Heaven. Parishioner Comments: “I was actually in tears many times driving down the interstate as I listened to this talk. I feel a disconnect in my relationship with Mary. I do not know how to get to know her better - but this helped to understand Mary in a more personal way. It also helps to defend and teach about our mother when others may not understand our devotion to her.” This CD and others are available in the Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk located in the south vestibule of the Church. Parish Social Ministry Summer Food Pantry Every year food pantry donations drop dramatically during the summer months. We greatly appreciate any donations that you may be able to provide. The following is a list of items that we need at this time: Rice Peanut Butter/Jelly Tuna Fish Chef Boyardee Cereal Baked Beans Canned Fruit Juice/Juice Packs Instant Potatoes Crackers Snacks Tomato Sauce Cake Mix Red & Black Beans In lieu of shopping for any of these items, a King Kullen gift card will also help us to provide families with the resources to buy everyday perishable items. The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time | June 16, 2013 The Squires Visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral Eleven squires and their families traveled to Manhattan on the Feast of Corpus Christi (Sunday, June 2nd) and attended the Cardinal’s Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Through the efforts of Frank De Lucia by connecting with a classmate at his high school reunion who had studied with Cardinal Dolan in Rome, the Squires were acknowledged during the Mass, four of the boys brought the gifts up to the Cardinal, Father Sikorski concelebrated, and His Eminence met with the group briefly and posed for pictures after Mass. While there was not time for specific questions about vocations to the priesthood, Cardinal Dolan invited the boys who are altar servers to come back to serve at Mass with him at future dates. Frank De Lucia told the boys that the trip was an example of how God guides us in our daily lives over the expanse of many years. Knights of Columbus THE FATHER WILLIAM A. The fines for not complying with this HHS mandate are crippling and threaten the very existence of these institutions and businesses, seeking to coerce them into bending to the dictates of an unjust law. What would this fine cost your child’s Catholic School or University? What would it cost the Catholic hospital where your family receives care? How could these institutions survive? Join fellow Catholics in the events of the Fortnight For Freedom to learn and pray and act to restore America’s religious liberty. The opening Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Murphy on June 21st, at 7:30 PM at the Cathedral of St. Agnes. On June 29th, Catholics for Freedom of Religion will co-sponsor a rally “Religious Freedom: Our 1st Amendment Right” from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM at St. John the Baptist High School. The closing Mass of the fortnight will be celebrated by Bishop Robert Brennan on July 4th, at 12:10 PM at St Agnes Cathedral. Please RSVP for the rally by June 24th to reserve space. Those rights are God-given, not stategranted. Every person and every religious institution already has from God what is guaranteed in our Constitution and Bill of Rights: freedom of religion and of conscience.” Bishop William Murphy, Rockville Centre In celebration of the Year of Faith, the Diocese of Rockville Centre offers this Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Washington, D.C. Please save the date and join us, together with faithful from all across our diocese, on Saturday, September 28, 2013 for a day-long experience filled with opportunities for prayer, reflection, reconciliation and fellowship. The Road to Sainthood: an Update their thorough investigation. The Congregation will now select a team of five medical doctors who are specialists in the medical illness that affected Marion Foerst. The doctors will examine the evidence to determine if the cure of Marion, through the intercession of The Venerable, was inexplicable by all scientific measures and not natural or due to medical treatment. The cure must also be deemed complete and lasting. Pray for a miracle for a suffering person through the intercession of the Venerable ANTHONY VINCENT GALLO S.C.J. Diocesan Priest Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart Monteforte Irpino (AV) | January 11, 1899 Rome May 2, 1934 Please visit www.fathergallo.com Update on the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of the Venerable Father Anthony Vincent Gallo. To the greater glory of God. It is with great pleasure to announce the progress of the potential miracle granted to Marion Foerst through the intercession of the Venerable Father Anthony Vincent Gallo. Marion was an active parishioner at St. Mary’s Church in Manhasset, New York prior to her passing. Her husband, Jack, continues to be an active parishioner at St. Mary’s. If three of the five doctors agree that the cure was inexplicable, it is sufficient to proceed to the next stage. The doctors cannot decide that a miracle took place. That judgment is reserved for the theological consultants, whose opinions must be seconded by the Congregation’s cardinals, and eventually by the Pope. A panel of seven theologians is selected to review the potential miracle and determine whether the cure occurred solely through the intercession of The Venerable. It must be clear that the patient’s recovery occurred only after The Venerable’s help was invoked, and, furthermore, it must be equally clear that the cure was obtained through The Venerable and no one else. There is one exception to this: if the person praying only to The Venerable also directs their prayers to Jesus. In such an instance the miracle can be attributed to The Venerable on the grounds that Jesus is necessarily involved in all graces granted by God. This is a complex process that requires interviews with all those who prayed to The Venerable. If the process determines that a miracle did occur, and the Pope concurs, the Pope will then certify the acceptance of the miracle and issue a formal decree, which could result in a decision by the Pope to elevate The Venerable to the status of Blessed. We should all continually pray to The Venerable for his intercession for divine intervention to cure medical sufferings of our own or of those we know and love. Our prayers to The Venerable provide hope and love to fulfill the needs of the faithful in this secular world. This article was submitted by parishioner Bill Gallo, a nephew of The Venerable Father Anthony Vincent Gallo. The medical testimony and records of all the doctors that treated her have been personally delivered by the Vice Postulator of the Cause, Msgr. Frank Caldwell, to the Postulator in Rome, Father Vincenzo Pinto, SCJ, who in turn personally delivered the documents to the Congregation Marion and Jack Foerst offer their testimony at St. for the Causes of Saints for Mary’s on September 30, 2010.
