History of “The Sixth Hour” (The Head of Christ), 1960
The painting on the cover, called “The Sixth Hour,” had
special significance to the United Church a half-century
ago.
The artist immigrated from Denmark as a young man
and did the only thing he knew: boxing. He went on to
attain the Canadian professional boxing title and was
ranked fourth in the world. But Gregers Gregersen’s
life took an unexpected turn when, at the height of his
boxing career, just before a fight for the world title, he
gave his life to Jesus. Pursuing a vital new sense of call,
he resigned from boxing undefeated and served as a
United Church minister for the rest of his life.
The passion at the heart of the Rev. Gregersen’s faith
was shared with the wider church community in 1963
when this painting appeared on the cover of the Good
Friday bulletin. It so moved congregations across the
country that a full-sized reproduction was sent to every
church.

the message the Women’s Network of Maya
Presbyterials repeats over and over again to all of
its members, both young and old.
Formed in 1986, the network of rural Indigenous
women exists to bring healing and hope after
500 years of violence against and exploitation of
Mayan women. Together, the women from three
presbyterials stretching across Guatemala support
one another through education and capacitybuilding initiatives. They train female leaders in
health, finance, theology, agriculture, and human
rights. They build community, offer compassion,
and cultivate peace.

Healthy food makes healthy bodies. On the cover
we see Sister Nonkosi Mrwebo, a nurse at the
Hamburg health clinic in South Africa, put this
into practice as she collects vegetables for her
patients. The clinic’s supporter and United Church
partner, ACT Alliance, works with over 130 church
and church-related organizations around the
world, many of them concerned with issues of
food security.
Whether it is providing agricultural training
and small loans to farmers or food packages to
the survivors of disasters, we as ACT Alliance
members are helping to ensure that everyone,
everywhere, has access to the food they need in
order to flourish.

The United Church Crest
The church crest is the official signature of The United Church of Canada and
visually presents the cornerstone of our faith and the traditions that shape us. As
such, the crest displays our spiritual and historic roots. At the 41st General Council
in August 2012, the United Church acknowledged the presence and spirituality of
Aboriginal peoples in the church by revising the crest.

To seek justice
Each week a group of volunteers and friends of the
Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine
and Israel (EAPPI) walks along the barrier separating
Jerusalem from the Occupied Territories. As they walk
they pray for an end to the violence and abuse of
human rights that is causing so many to suffer in this
region.
In addition to praying, the EAPPI advocates for peace
by participating in non-violent Palestinian- and Israeliled actions for peace, monitoring and reporting human
rights abuses, and providing a protective presence
to vulnerable communities. In the past decade, 25
United Church people have served as Ecumenical
Accompaniers in this area.

M&S New Creed Art Contest Winner: Mary Goudy
Over the past few years, Mission and Service has
sponsored an art contest that invites United Church
people from around the country to express their
understanding of an aspect of God’s mission in the
world. We were delighted by Mary’s depiction of Jesus,
in whom our hope for justice and life rests.
When asked about her painting, Mary pointed out that
Jesus is walking with two children and showing them

IN MATTHEW 25:35–40, Jesus teaches that we will find him among people who are suffering. The gospel
message calls us to be mindful, kind, hospitable, justice-seeking, and persistent, and to change ideas and systems

Jesus confirms that we will find him in the world through relationship. Specifically, he promises that we will find
his transformative presence when we respond to others’ needs.
Responding to human need—that is our Mission and Service. To paraphrase the Matthew scripture, “Just as
you give for Mission and Service and work persistently to change policies and structures so that boys and girls,
women and men in the whole of God’s world can have their basic needs met, you do this to me.”
