What the MIS progression decisions report shows
What the MIS progression decisions report shows The Management Information System (MIS) progression decisions report (sample below) should be used where the full breakdown of progression decisions requires analysis, particularly where progression has been highlighted as an area of interest in the programme dataset report. The report also facilitates a detailed comparison of all programmes alongside one another. Summaries of this data feature on the progression section of the programme dataset (ie progression and retention indicators – see columns no. 15 and 16 below). See separate guidance which outlines how programme level performance reviews should be conducted. The report shows progression decisions of undergraduate and postgraduate students, from one year of their programme to the next through to completion. It covers programmes delivered at all levels, studied in full-time mode (includes previously full-time and distance learning). Data is extracted early October to show the end of session ie including the reassessment period. Please note: reference is made to the old levels of study (ie 1, 2, 3) – these are to be translated into the revised National Qualifications Framework (NQF) levels (ie 4, 5, 6) until this is amended. Part-time students are not currently included as overall ‘progression’ rates are skewed when reporting part-time patterns of study that do not follow that of full-time students. The Department of Academic Quality are seeking to enhance the reports available to better suit provision that does not follow the standard full-time undergraduate framework. All staff can access this data through the staff portal: ‘systems’ tab | Enterprise Information Portal (EIP) | ‘DAQ MIS reports’ tab – no account is required to log-on. Full details on all the reports available and how to produce relevant data can be found on the Department of Academic Quality (DAQ) website: dmu.ac.uk/data. Please contact Suzanne Nelson, Quality Officer (Performance Analysis) on x8310 or email: [email protected] with any queries. The numbered columns on the sample report below map directly to the corresponding numbered rows on the subsequent explanatory table. These should be used alongside one another for clarification on what the report shows, how the data is calculated and what it includes/excludes. Covers all levels of study, both undergraduate and postgraduate. Includes collaborative partner locations (where applicable). • Excludes part-time mode of study. • Includes students enrolled on the whole level of study, not higher levels being reassessed in odd modules failed previously. This occurs where a student has interrupted or transferred, yet has been given a PAB code at the assessment board. 2 Withdrew before 1 Dec The number of students who withdrew from the programme before 1st December for reasons other than academic failure or internal transfer. None TE 3 Interrupt The number of students on interrupted studies. - IT, IU 4 Transfer The number of students who transferred to another programme within the University during the academic session. - TR Total Withdraw The number of students who withdrew from the programme for reasons other than academic failure or internal transfer. None, C, or not T TE 5 • Includes those featuring in the ‘pre 1 Dec withdrawals’ column. 6 Intended Award The number of students who gained their intended final award are and leaving DMU (actual award = qualification aim). A, H 7 Interim & Leave The number of students who gained an interim award and are leaving DMU (actual award ≠ qualification aim). A, H 8 Interim & Cont The number of students who gained an interim award and are continuing at DMU. B 9 Proceed The number of students who are proceeding with or without failed modules. J, K, P, Z, I 10 Placement The number of students who are proceeding to a placement year. D, F 11 Not Proceed The number of students not proceeding because of outstanding failed modules. G, L, M, N, R, S, X 12 Ext Examined The number of students whose results are unknown as they are externally examined. U, V 13 Not Finalised The number of students with a query on the student decision that has not yet been finalised. E, Q, W 14 Terminate The number of students who are terminated because of academic failure. T 15 Progression Indicator The percentage of students enrolled at the start of the year on a programme level who are able to proceed to the next level of study at the end of the session. Able to proceed defined as: • achieving an interim award and continuing • proceeding with or without failed modules • proceeding to a placement year Interim & Cont (B) plus Placement (D, F) plus Proceed (J, K, P, Z, I) 16 Retention Indicator The percentage of students enrolled at the start of the year on a programme level who are able to be retained at the end of the session, defined as: • the population of students represented in the progression indicator (above), plus: • not proceeding due to outstanding failed modules • interrupted Progression Indicator (B, D, F, J, K, P, Z, I) plus Not Proceed (G, L, M, N, R, S, X) TE and/or ER, ET, IT, IU Suzanne Nelson | Quality Officer (Performance Analysis) | Department of Academic Quality | [email protected] | 8310 F:\New website content dec2011\Data\Progression Decisions_Oct 12.doc October 2012 Page 2 PAB code key: PAB Code Description A B C D E F G H I J K L M N P Q R S T U V W X Z Achieved an award, leaving DMU Achieved an award and continuing at DMU No award, not failed but leaving DMU Progress to placement Waiting for results Progress to placement carrying fails and/or defers Cannot progress – resits and/or defers required for HND Leaving DMU with institutional credits Progress to non-accredited Progress to DipHE only Progress to ordinary (non-honours) degree only Cannot progress – resits and/or defers required for HNC only Cannot progress – resits and/or defers required for DipHE only Cannot progress – resits and/or defers required Progress To be investigated – no decision Cannot progress – resits/defers required for non-honours Deferred Fail – studies terminated Result unknown – externally examined Programme completed – externally examined Results withheld May not proceed, resits required, transfer (no longer in use) Progress carrying fails and/or defers Stage code* key: Stage Code Description ER ET IT IU TE TR Enrolment Enrolled/interrupted not attending Interruption (approved) Interruption (unapproved) Terminated Transferred to another programme * Additional stage codes are in use, which do not feature in the MIS progression decisions report.
