The Farm
Now in its tenth season, Scratch is a small,
highly diversified farm located in Cranston,
RI. We have been providing Providence
residents and restaurants with fresh, high
quality produce since 2005. At Scratch, we
are committed to intelligent and efficient
land practices to improve the fertility and
overall health of the soil without using any
dangerous or chemical inputs. In this way,
we strive to be responsible stewards of the
land and to provide our customers with
produce that has the best flavor and highest
nutritional value.
The CSA
When you join our CSA, you become a
shareholder in the farm for a season. Your
membership directly supports the farm’s
operation and entitles you to a weekly share of
the finest produce available anywhere. As a
CSA member, you also ensure the viability of
small-scale farming in Rhode Island and
actively support a local economy that promotes
both agricultural and economic sustainability.

Each week you will receive a generous portion of
all that’s ripe and ready in our fields. Due to the
nature of the growing season, shares will be
lighter in the spring and heavier in the summer and
fall. While content will vary from June to October,
we estimate we’ll have 8-10 different items each
week, with plenty of weekly favorites and some
delectable rarities. Produce pickup will be
Monday afternoons, 4-7 pm, on the west side of
Providence at 186 Carpenter St.

By signing this contract, I agree to become a member
of the Scratch Farm CSA for 2014. This membership
entitles me to a weekly share of the farm’s produce
for 25 weeks. I agree to pay my membership fee in
full and on time and to work one day at the farm.
Shares are available on a sliding scale from $600$850 for full shares, $350-$600 for half shares,
higher payments are used to directly subsidize lower
payments.

The Breakdown

The CSA season lasts twenty-five weeks, from
June 9 through November 24th. Full shares
(approximately enough to feed 3-4 adults) are
available on a sliding scale from $600-$850.
Half shares (for one or two people) are
available for $325-$600. By using a sliding
scale we hope to attract customers who
otherwise would not be able to afford a share
and may never be exposed to the delights of
directly supporting a small farm. If you have
the ability to pay the maximum amount please
do; you will be directly subsidizing low-income
shares.
Get your hands dirty!
The best way to know where your food comes
from is to come out to the farm and harvest it
yourself. Please give us a call to let us know that
you want to come out and visit, if we aren’t too
busy, we will give you a tour, if we are, we will
put you to a task. Bring food if you plan to stay
for lunch, and wear sunscreen, a hat, and clothes
that can get dirty.

Put Your Eggs in One Basket
Additional shares: If you would like to join any of the
additional shares, please indicate which you would like
and include full payment with your first CSA payment.

The chickens are raised in Cranston by Zephyr Farm.
The mix of Rhode Island Reds and rare breeds are in a
moveable coop and have all the fresh air and grass
they desire. These are very high quality eggs.
Fruit is provided by Hill Orchard. Starting in August, the
share will include apples, peaches, and plums grown
down the road in Johnston, R.I. Shares will have
peaches and plums earlier in the season, and apples
later on. The fruit is not organic.
The meat share is provided by our friends at Simmons
Farm. This 120-acre certified organic family farm is
located in Middletown, RI. They raise pastured pork
and chicken and grass-fed beef. Meat shares will be
delivered once a month and include 4 packages of
meat, usually 1 whole pasture-raised chicken, and three
1 lb packages of pork or beef. Lamb and goat will be
included seasonally.
Cheese shares are also available from Simmons Farm
and will be delivered with the meat shares once a
month. The share costs $11/ delivery and will include
two 1/3 lb pieces of fresh cheese (chevre, feta, or
fromage blanc). Some weeks, one of the cheeses will be
substituted with 1 lb of yogurt.
F&M Fermented prepares and ferments locally-grown
vegetables, including some from Scratch farm. These
are wild ferments in salt water brine, leading to flavors
and textures that vary with the season and different
vegetables. There will be sauerkraut, kimchi, pickled
cucumbers, and other fruits and roots in season.
