WILSHIRE BOULEVARD TEMPLE BULLETIN Online Edition Please call to obtain a full printed copy. Volume 97, Number 10 • October 1, 2010 WHAT BASEBALL MEANS TO THE JEWS W hy is Wilshire Boulevard Temple holding the Los Angeles premier of the new movie, “Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story?” Not only to raise scholarship funds for our school and camps, but also for more than a century, baseball has been the one true Jewish American sport… and it still is. “You could look it up!” Once having arrived on freedom’s shores, many immigrant Jews sought with unrepentant fervor to become “good Americans.” This meant learning a new language, acquiring citizenship, and seeking every opportunity available to grow, prosper and become part of the American fabric. No American institution held as honored a place in the hearts of immigrant Jews than the game of baseball–our unchallenged national past time, then and now. To love America was to love baseball, and to love baseball was to be an American! The game itself relates easily to Jewish culture. Baseball requires well-practiced skills, strategies, planning ahead, knowing that many different outcomes are possible on each and every pitch. Team work is crucial. And of course there’s the uniform! From the hat, team insignia, color coded socks and those beautiful gloves, baseball, like Jewish worship, is filled with intricacies and hidden rituals cherished by those who know them. And they are often baffling and boring to those who don’t. When I was a young boy I ate, drank and slept baseball– totally smitten with the game. I would often sneak into my synagogue’s glorious sanctuary (strikingly similar to Wilshire Boulevard Temple’s), stand on the bima, look out into that vast expanse, and imagine hitting “Ruthian” homeruns to the deepest part of the balcony. The memories of the world series and Yom Kippur are forever linked by time of year and the bizarre baseball-crazy behavior of some who sat in services with transistor radios attached to their ears with primitive earplugs! Those not quite as crazy would gather outside on the expansive stone stairs of the Temple entrance to listen to the broadcast outloud (a Yom Kippur ritual for many I’m certain). When the great Koufax refused to pitch the nineteen sixty-five world series opener against the Twins, as it fell on Yom Kippur-we once immigrant Jews had arrived. I can still hear my mom (of blessed memory) yelling at the top of her lungs after the last out of the sixty-three series when Koufax beat the Yankees… ”Koufax did it!!! He beat the Yankees!!! He did it!!! He did it!!!” Baseball and Jews…an American love story! Cantor Don Gurney Los Angeles Premier of “Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story” November 17, 2010 • 6:30 p.m. www.wbtla.org/events/item/408/youth_events In This Issue I want to be part of the future! make a legacy gift to the temple Meet the Religious School Team The Big Give Torah Portion Torah Online: www.wbtla.org The Final Torah Portion of the Year: V’Zot HaBracha—And this is the Blessing L etting go, separating, individuating is always a challenge. Over the last couple weeks, I’ve seen nursery school parents hovering at classroom windows and walking away with tears streaming down their faces. I’ve noticed kindergarten parents, even those whose children had spent full days in nursery school, talking with our school directors, crying. Similarly, those who have dropped their last child at college drive home with pride and a heavy heart, even though the separation is wanted and expected. On the day that Moses turned 120 and died he said: “I am one hundred and twenty years old today; I can no longer go out and return, and God instructed me ‘you shall not cross over the Jordan.’” This meant that the Israelites would enter the new Promised Land without their guide and leader. The 12th century French Torah Commentator Rashi tells us that God restricts Moses; he is required to hold back and let the Israelites move forward on their own. Ibn Ezra reminds us that Moses would not be useful to the Israelites in battle anymore; better that people rely on God and on the new leadership. Ramban sees it differently; he says, Moses was consoling the people and empowering them. “Don’t worry, don’t be afraid, I won’t be with you, but God, who is the Ever Present One will always travel with you and inside you.” For many years I have experienced separation, as a daughter and mother, and as a rabbi. I believe we build trust along the way, and with each separation we teach our children that they will grow and develop while taking with them the values, the concern and the love we impart. God will guide and protect, surround and embrace, as each generation of Israelites takes its steps into the promised land. That is the Blessing, even and especially for us. Rabbi Karen L. Fox Plugged In Tweet the Leder! Drum roll please... Rabbi Leder has joined the Twitter universe and will be tweeting a few times a week to his followers. We encourage all of you to find him and follow him. His tweets are insightful, interesting and sometimes funny. Find him at www.twitter.com/rabbileder And don’t forget to follow the Temple. Family and friends sit down to a beautiful meal: freshly baked biscuits, green beans, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, turkey, gravy, and of pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving is one of the few times throughout the year that many of us truly think about all that we have to be thankful for. All of us are among the luckiest people who have ever lived. We live in a country that grants us unprecedented freedoms and fights to protect them. We have the opportunity to build lives for ourselves that people in most of the world could not even imagine. We are the lucky ones, but we will never be able to keep what we have if we do not share it with those who have less. Sadly, there are thousands of people in Los Angeles who cannot provide a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for their families. Some of these families are homeless, while others may simply have fallen on hard times. Thanksgiving is our opportunity make a difference. If Thanksgiving is about appreciating all that we have, we must also recognize those who are in need—those whose Thanksgiving tables are empty, those who have no table at all. At this time of the year, when we celebrate the harvest, our Torah reminds us to remember those who are in need and to feed them. This Thanksgiving, we will pack and deliver one thousand complete Thanksgiving dinners to some of the neediest and most impoverished residents on Skid Row. Don’t miss this opportunity to turn your Thanksgiving into a mitzvah. Rabbinic Intern Beau Shapiro The Big Give November 21 • 1:30 - 5:00 p.m. • Temple Campus www.wbtla.org/events/item/282/tikkun_events Adult Opportunities Spilberg Fund is Music to our Ears E very year, thanks to lifelong congregants Anne and Nathan Spilberg, Wilshire Boulevard Temple is able to bring to our congregants special events that embrace and expand upon our understanding of modern Jewish life and culture. The Anne and Nathan Spilberg Fund for Jewish Life and Values was established in 1998 for the purpose of entertaining and educating our members, community and future families for generations to come. This year – Jewish pop music! There is an extensive history of Jewish music but we focus on a twist of this genre. Popular music captures our attention on radio, screen and smartphone, and Jewish pop is no different. Later this month, The Spilberg Fund invites Josh Kun, a daring and insightful professor in the Annenberg School for Communication at USC, to provide for our members an experience in lost moments of sight and sound in American Jewish pop history, at the event “Jews on Vinyl.” Complementing the music and Kun’s presentation will be an abundance of often kitschy and surprising album art that tells stories of Jews from the 1940s to the 1980s. He weaves an account of sacred songs into the triumvirate of Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand and Barry Manilow. Join in the fun and the visual and aural learning. We are grateful to the Anne and Nathan Spilberg Fund for Jewish Life and Values that makes this engaging event possible. Rabbi Karen L. Fox Jews on Vinyl October 21 • 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. • Irmas Campus RSVP to Phyl Wallace, [email protected] www.wbtla.org/events/item/406/adult_events 3 Brawerman Elementary School Boker Tov Brawerman F rom the first floor to the third, Brawerman students are watching the news! Each Monday morning classroom SmartBoards display the highly rated Boker Tov Brawerman, our weekly news broadcast. Now in its second year, this special program conceived and produced by third grade teacher Stephanie Liebert, features fifth and sixth grade news desk anchors who report everything we need to know. Topics include the weekly schedule, student council news, Brawerman Blaze athletics, holiday celebrations and community birthdays. Students are invited to share an inspirational quote along with their original, personal interpretations. Jane Marcus selected Albert Einstein: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” To her this suggests that knowledge is limited to what we already know, but imagination allows us the freedom to think and discover new things. Zachary Weiss chose Scott Adams: “Technology is no place for wimps.” He understands this to mean if you want to use technology, you should be strong and believe in yourself. The program concludes with its own special slogan, reminding us to “Stay Menchy Brawerman!” “ Stay Menchy Brawerman! ” Religious School: “Center for Learning & Engagement” Meet Our Team! Each of us brings a high level of talent and experience from the world of Jewish education. We have been working tirelessly to develop new and exciting programming for our students from kindergarten through high school. The dedication of our team can only be matched by our desire to teach our children to be inspired by everything Judaism has to offer. Early Childhood Centers Our Extraordinary Early Childhood Parent Association! S chool may have been out for the summer but the Parent Association was hard at work! The newly elected Parent Association President, Tasha Baum, and her six Vice Presidents: Andrea Slutske, Claudia Schwartz, Carla Liber, Erica Friedman, Roya Milder, and Georgeann Carras, have been overseeing the 30 early childhood committees for both sites. Under the guidance of Carol Bovill, Director, and Fredda Loewenstein, Associate Director, the Parent Association has been meeting, planning and gearing up for an exciting, enriched, new school year. This collaboration is a primary reason our programs are so special. Learn more about our Early Childhood Centers, visit www.wbtla.org/pages/ecc Camps changing lives for Ten Summers A t the conclusion of our Shabbat celebration on August 13th, Camp Director Douglas Lynn acknowledged Rabbi Eshel’s ten summers at camp by sharing the following… “The Mystics teach that in the beginning God was everywhere. There was no space that wasn’t filled with God’s presence. When God decided to create the world, God had to physically pull back from some Rabbi Eshel space to create an emptiness to fill. God created the world and everything has such a in it–the earth, the seas, the animals and people; but upon completion on more than there was something missing. By pulling back, there was no God left in 1,100 kids each summer the space now occupied by the world. To fix this, God created massive vessels, filled them with divine light, and sent them to the world. By some accident, these vessels shattered. Shards of them along with small sparks of God were scattered throughout. It has become our job to seek out these shards and sparks and put them back together, so we can live with God in our lives. For the past ten summers Rabbi Eshel has been inspiring our campers, staff, and everyone in our community to find the sacred shards and the divine sparks, to make our community a better place. We thank him for being a teacher, a friend, a leader, and for truly changing the lives of everyone in our community.” positive impact 5 Developments a legacy gift to the temple from rabbi magnin’s gatekeeper: esther lewis G iving at the office” epitomized Esther Lewis, who for more than three decades served as the personal secretary to Rabbi Edgar F. Magnin and then to Rabbi Harvey J. Fields. But Esther was much more than secretary and gatekeeper for them. She was also their intermediary on the telephone, their timekeeper for meetings, quality control officer for their writing and proud guardian of their records. She was totally devoted to the Wilshire Boulevard Temple, in whose role and reputation in the community she took great pride. A “career woman” when it was not the norm, Esther left her Connecticut home and moved to Washington D.C. where she worked at the Pentagon. In the early 1950s, she arrived in Los Angeles and became as prominent a personality as the rabbis she served. Esther shared many of the qualities we associate with the congregation: a sense of responsibility, class, reliability, generosity and concern for congregants and community. Those of her colleagues who forgot these virtues heard about it from her. Before she died last year, Esther had many conversations with Rabbi Leder and was excited about the restoration and redevelopment project at the Temple campus. To ensure that she would be a part of the future of this great congregation she loved and served so well, she left $400,000 of her estate to the Building Lives project. Like Esther, please consider a gift for the Temple in your estate plans and let us know of your intentions by using the form below. If you’d like to discuss a testamentary gift, please call the Development Office. We can all do our part to continue our Temple’s proud legacy.
