Shirley Swimming Pool
Championships 2016
Welcome to the 39th Annual Swimming Gala and our 17th at this venue. There are
103 races tonight, with 154 swimmers taking part.
For the first time, this years event has been organised by a team of dedicated
Dolphin Parents
Medals will be awarded to the fastest six swimmers for swim school and fastest three
swimmers in dolphins in each age group, boys and girls. In some age groups there is
more than one race because there are only eight lanes across the pool.
It will be the fastest times from all the heats in the age group that will be awarded
extra medals.
The venue for the presentation is Freemantle scout group hut in Kentish road, just
across from the pool on 9th July.
All swimmers receive a medal tonight for reaching the Championship Gala which
they receive as they leave, presented by our special guest, former Saints and England
footballer - James Beattie. There is also a commemorative Shirley Pool key ring light
and sweets which can be collected after changing from the entrance hall . These will
be handed out by another mystery guest - but be careful as you go - and may the
force be with you....
Raffle prizes can be found there also, thank you to our sponsors: Maru,
Saints Foundation, Gasniers, Shirley Pool, Team Spirit, Go Outdoors, London Camera
Exchange, Mark Searle Hairdressing, LB Beauty, Clinique Hair and Beauty, Santo
Lounge and One Stop.
The results will be ready within a day or two at the pool and on the website
www.shirleyswimmingpool.co.uk
The children can change once their last race is complete.
Thank you for supporting this evening’s gala and for making the effort to bring the
children swimming regularly.
We hope you will be proud of your children’s efforts and enjoy the evening.
David, Chris , the Gala Team and all the teachers.

Shirley Swimming Pool - A Brief History
The company that runs Shirley Pool began in 1969 in the garden of the Perry family home in West End. Frank
Perry was a primary school maths teacher, a County Level water polo player and part time coach at the
Southampton Swimming Club.
The City Club at the time was the best in Europe, with coaches Derek Snelling and Dave Haller producing
swimmers to represent the UK in every Olympics. Demand for pool space was high but there was only one
local pool and Frank recognised the potential for private swimming tuition.
The Central Baths, as it was then known, had a two year waiting list for swimming lessons. It was a majestic
1960’s pool, with underwater windows in the deep end, a grand gallery on both sides, a 33 yard pool and a
small, cold pool. Frank built his small garage pool from a kit with the help of some Trojan Rugby Club friends
and advertised the swim school just once. It wasn’t easy, the first day it opened the heating failed and the
family had to run back and forwards from the house with kettles of
hot water. Lessons would start when Frank got home from his work
as a school teacher.
The demand for lessons quickly grew and the business expanded,
hiring the LSU Pool in the Avenue, building a second pool in
Horndean and running courses all over the City wherever there was
water space.
In 1973 the Council offered a piece of waste land in a derelict back street of Shirley, Kentish Rd, on a long
lease and work began on the Shirley Pool. Frank & Val Perry sold the house and land in West End, moved
closer to the new site, investing everything in the new venture. The estimated £25,000 build cost quickly
became £35,000, the oil crisis sent the overheads through the roof and the next ten years became a struggle
to pay off the loans.
Despite being the only purpose built private swim school in the country, the public were slow on the uptake.
By 1985 Frank had left to pursue his first love, coaching, at Winchester Penguins S.C. Val kept the business
going with Ruth, their youngest daughter for another eight years and the business began to stabilise. Val was
diagnosed with cancer in 1992 and, in trying to sell the pool, discovered that there was serious corrosion in
the steelwork.
David joined the family business in 1993 and within three years was able to raise the funds to allow Val to
retire.
Chris White was recruited to join full time teacher Jane Read who had been with the pool since 1988. Baby
lessons, pioneered in the 1970’s, expanded with Viv and Deborah. The culture of high quality tuition was
maintained and gradually the lesson program expanded.
The introduction of the direct debit system in 2003 proved very popular with busy families, offering
affordability and flexibility and the business grew rapidly.
The liners of the pools were upgraded, a new plant room designed and installed bringing state of the art
chemical controls and UV disinfection. The land was purchased from the council and detailed planning began
for a new roof.
4
Planning permission was eventually granted in 2009 and foundations started for a new two storey building
that would go over the existing site, like a butter dish lid. The plan was to complete the fitting upstairs and
then remove the original 1974 building. The loan from the bank was withdrawn eight weeks before
construction was to start, a victim of the banking crisis, and the construction of the foundations caused a
huge leak in the pool.
The pool closed on August 1st 2009 and the search for the leak began. In an extraordinary four weeks, the
steelwork and roof was removed and replaced, interior and exterior walls were knocked down, the whole
site was rewired and plumbed with new showers, new changing rooms and reception designed and fitted.
CCTV, security shutters and alarm systems were all in place when the pool reopened on September 1st. The
leadership of project manager Martin Birch was key in the successful rebuild. He also found and fixed the
leak.
In 2013 the final phase of the rebuild was completed with a heat recovery system. February 2014 was the
busiest month in the history of the pool with 1800 babies, children and adults in the teaching program.

Southampton Dolphins Swimming Club 2015/16 Season Review
With the 2015/16 swimming season drawing to a close it has been another fantastic year for the dolphins with
success from novice to international level. The club continues to improve results year after year, numbers are
swelling due to the success of the team but most importantly swimmers are enjoying their time with the club
support by a fantastic team of parents who are making tonight’s gala possible emphasising team spirit and
working together.
Novice League 2015
Competing over five gala’s at Christchurch’s Two Rivers Meet Leisure Centre the young Dolphins from Club and
Talent squads performed very well securing second place overall. Regular performers enjoyed continued
success and personal best throughout the competition which starts in March and ends in November. Swimmers
as young as 7 can compete and it’s an excellent competition for developing the talented youngsters in the club.
Hampshire County Championships 2016
Southampton Dolphins Swimming Club entered the Hampshire County Championships for a sixth year winning
a record number of Gold and Silver medals. The Dolphins recorded some impressive results winning 25 medals
(7 Gold, 7 Silver and 11 Bronze). Dolphin swimmers represented the club in 30 finals, and for the first time in
the clubs history two swimmers competed in a Ladies Open Finals. Amy Thompson swam in the 50m
Breaststroke final and Jodie Yates in the 200m Butterfly final.
Over the past two swimming seasons the club has amassed 59 Hampshire County Championship medals!
Just as impressive as the medal hall is the clubs conversion rate, 92.3% of swims resulted in personal best times
and out of the 13 eligible swimmers 12 have qualified for the South East Region Swimming Championships
(“Regionals”), 10 with automatic and 2 with base times a new club record. With three months still to go till the
Regional Championships and more qualifying meets to be swum, Head Coach Chris White is confident of
improving on performances.
Kate Baxter (12) stared for the Dolphins winning an incredible 10 individual
medals. Kate competed in a very strong 13yrs and under age group but was
still crowned County Champion in four events. On the first weekend Kate
competed in the 400m IM, 400m FS and 800m FS. In her first race Kate blew
the opposition away to retain her 400m IM title in a time of 5.31.47 which
represented a 17 second personal best and a time that currently ranks Kate
22nd in Great Britain in her age group.
Shortly after Kate took to the 800m FS, swimming with fantastic rhythm and
power maintaining an even pace throughout which left her finishing well
ahead in her heat. Kate finished with Silver narrowly missing out on the Gold
by 0.16s despite recording a 26 second personal best of 10.02.91.
Kate was really motivated after narrowly missing out on her second Gold and
took to the task of the 400m FS in emphatic fashion. Kate smashed out the
first 100m in 1.06.43 and the first 200m in 2.18.75 both long course personal bests and quicker than anyone
else on the day, even in the older age group. Kate continued her stunning performance finishing with the Gold
medal in a time of 4.48.32 a 15 second personal best which also ranks Kate 18 th in Great Britain.
Kate continued her fantastic form into the second weekend where she swam a mammoth 16 races over two
days including finals in all 50m and 100m events entered. Kate became County Champion in the 200m FS and
200m IM and placed a close second in the 100m FS. Kate ended with 4 gold, 4 silver and two bronze medals
after the first two weekends. Kate wasn’t finished there and swam for a third weekend at the junior /open

2.14.90, 100m FS in 1.02.02 and 50m FS in 29.15.

fashion not only taking the lead but creating a 3 meter gap between herself and
second place. Isabella extended the gap on the breaststroke leg and maintained this
on the freestyle coming home 4 seconds ahead of second place in a time of 5.23.19
to be crowned County Champion.

Rhyseren Taylor Representing Great Britain!
On 1st May 2016 Rhyseren travelled to Millfield to compete in a Biathle
race – a continuous run, swim, run event taking advantage of the school’s
50m pool and synthetic running track. Finishing well inside the qualifying
time she has now been selected to represent Great Britain in the European
Biathle Championships on the 15th – 17th July. Rhyseren will travel with
over 80 other British athletes to Setubal in Portugal where the swim section of the race will take place in the Atlantic. Competing in the u10
category as a year 4 she managed to beat a number of year 5 girls to secure
her place on the team.
British and ASA Summer Nationals
For a second consecutive year Southampton Dolphins Swimming Club will have swimmers competing in the
National Swimming Championships in July and August at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield.
Isabella Fraser-Corbridge will be swimming in the girls 14 years 50m Butterfly at the British Championships after
securing a top 24 ranking in Great Britain (15th). Isabella will be the first swimmer from the club to compete at
British Championships. Kate Baxter will swim at the ASA Summer Nationals in the 13 years girls age group in the
200m and 400m Freestyle. Too young this year for British Championships as part of the progressive staging set
out by the ASA, Kate still had to secure top 20 rabkings in England to compete. For a second consecutive year
Filip Fraczek-Krygier has qualified for the ASA Summer Nationals. Despite an up and down year due to illness and
injury Filip has secured an impressive three swims, 50m and 100m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly. I’m sure
everyone will wish all three swimmers the best of luck for Nationals. Results will be posted on the notice board
and website.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to the people, without
whom, this evening’s gala would not have been possible:
David and all the teachers at Shirley Pool for teaching the children to swim and improve their strokes and for making swimming fun;
Chris, Clodagh, Phil, Collette and the other Southampton Dolphins Swimming Club instructors for their hard work and dedication in improving the children’s technique
and fitness and giving them the right environment to reach their full potential;
Our sponsors and providers of raffle prizes for this evening’s event;
Our honoured guests for taking the time to come along and present the children with
their medals and gifts;
The parents for all their time and effort in bringing the children along every week, and
often several times a week, for their swimming sessions (Shirley Pool is a second
home to a lot of families here this evening!);
The Dolphin’s mums and dads who have put a tremendous effort into putting on the
gala tonight , in particular Katy, Jane, Tracy, Rachael, Carol, Jo, Sarah, Bev, Charlotte,
Kelly, Zebe, Tina, Polly, Vicki, Julia and Chris.
Our final thank you must, of course, go to the children taking part tonight, without
whom we would all be sat at home watching the football!
