Frederick Bremer News
December 2015
We have come to the end of a hugely
successful term at Frederick Bremer,
and we are all going on holiday with
lots of amazing memories. As always,
there is so much happening at Frederick
Bremer that it is impossible to capture
it all. It has been a long but delightful
term. At this time of year, we reflect
on our achievements and start setting
ourselves some new year’s resolutions.
These are a few of my personal highlights for the Autumn term 2015:
Mia winning the regional final of
Jack Petchy’s Speak Out
Challenge
Listening to the amazing musical
talents of our Year 7 pupils at the
Winter Concert
Simmons and Simmons Young
Talent Winter Party
Like many pupils in Year 7, I also started
to learn the violin this term. I have
struggled with the complex skills and
amount of practice required. However,
through sheer perseverance I am
starting to play pieces of music I didn’t
think possible a few months ago.
Therefore, I am so impressed by the
talents I have seen performing and the
amount of practice and determination
which have enabled this to happen.
A huge thanks also to our parents for
their on-going support – it is not always
easy having a budding musician in the
house, but regular practice makes all
the difference.
Mia Lundie Smith, in Year 10, produced
an amazing solo speech about identity
which she performed at the Waltham
Forest finals. She is the first Bremer
pupil to win this award, and we are
all very proud of her. You can see her
speech here https://youtu.be/3MAufdnFVo4
On 15th December, we were invited to
the Head Offices of Simmons and
Simmons to celebrate their 4th year
of successful partnership work of the
Young Talent Programme. 4 cohorts of
pupils (over 50 in total) are now in the
programme, and most attended the
party. 2 pupils from cohort 1, Rebecca
Rumble and Stanley Soulsby are now at
University supported by £4000
Simmons and Simmons bursaries. Pupils
in cohort 2 have just been though UCAS
training. It was very exciting to hear
that 7 former Bremer pupils have just
been through interviews for Cambridge.
We will begin the applications for
cohort 5 (from Year 10) in the new year,
and we expect this to be a very
competitive application process for the
12 spaces available.
Ofsted inspection 8th and 9th
December
I have always been proud to be Headteacher here, and this was never more
the case than during our Ofsted inspection. Our pupils, staff, parents and
Governors were all amazing. Although
inspections are always really stressful
experiences, the school was always
shown at its best. Whilst we are still
waiting for the final report, I am confident that the school absolutely was ‘the
best it can be’. Thank you to everyone
who supported the school during this
time, it was really appreciated. I will
write to parents in January when the
report is published, with a summary of
the main findings.
My new year’s resolutions:
1. To work with pupils, parents and
staff to ensure that Frederick Bremer is
recognised as an outstanding school in
its next inspection
2. To work even more closely with parents and pupils on how our school can
be improved even further
3. To perform with the school orchestra
on the violin
4. To understand the pressures of taking
GCSEs by sitting GCSE Sociology in May
2015
5. To smile every day, as I so proud to be
the Head of this amazing school.
And my resolution for the whole school,
as I often say, is ‘to continue to be the
very best you can be’.
I wish you all a very happy and restful
break, and I look forward to seeing you
all in 2016.

STEAM News
Autumn 2015
STEAM lessons in years 7 and 8 are a great way for our learners to develop transferable skills or competencies to
support their learning in all their subjects. The key competencies we have identified as a school are:
Creativity, Leadership,
Independent learning, Community Engagement,
Literacy / Numeracy / Oracy
(CLICL)
We use Project-Based Learning, with its emphasis on Critique, Redrafting for Excellence, and Public Exhibition, to
drive the development of these competencies. Each project embeds learning and assessment of one or more of our
key competencies, and students revisit each competency over the course of the year to improve their skills. This
article profiles some of the projects currently underway and describes how they support development of CLICL
Year 7 Science-Art
Three groups of pupils are studying elements of the Universe Story and Big History Project (https://school.
bighistoryproject.com/bhplive), a journey through nearly 14 billion years of history. They started with a project on
origin stories from around the world, including the modern scientific story, and used collage and performance to tell
their stories.
Year 7 PE
Olympic table-tennis player Darius Knight visited school and worked with students for a day on their leadership
skills. Students are now developing games and workshops to teach primary school students.
Key Competencies
Community Engagement - with Darius and younger pupils
Literacy - structured read
Key Competencies
Creativity - inspiration, evaluation and more through collage
Literacy - Writing thier own version of an original story

Year 8 Humanities
Ms Morgan’s class is doing a series of projects with community organisation Maslaha http://www.maslaha.org/
winner of the Global Innovation Mindset Challenge. They started with a Comics in Schools project about the
experience of refugees, and are now working on an Ottoman puppetry project about rebellion and dissent. On
9th Dec they performed their puppet shows to a public audience at Rich Mix in Bethnal Green as part of the Book
Travels Exhibition http://www.maslaha.org/about/whats-happening/projects/evliya-celebi-exhibition/rich-mixexhibition-event-2015
Key Competencies
Creativity - storytelling through comics
Key Competencies

Spaceflight project
with the University
of York
We are taking part in a large
research project about
young people’s attitudes
to STEM, to accompany
astronaut Tim Peake’s
mission to the International
Space Station. Tim is the first
British astronaut to visit the
space station (he launched
on 15th Dec) and we will be
following his progress closely
– including growing some
rocket seeds he has taken
with him when he comes
back in 6 months.
Year 8 Girls Fencing
An 8 week collaborative filmmaking and fencing project
with British Fencing and
Maslaha. Girls are exploring
ideas around stereotyping
and self-confidence while
developing their fencing
skills. The school has been
given £800 worth of fencing
equipment to support longterm sustainability of the
project.
Watch out for the next issue to
see work from the Electronics,
Catering, Robotics and
Geography groups.
Year 11 students visit William
Morris Gallery Showcase
The results of the Yinka
Shonibore workshops,
which the current Year 11
art students attended, were
modelled at an evening event
at the William Morris Gallery
last month. The students had
continued the fabric identity
patches back at school which
Ms Riordan then kindly
applied onto a poncho which
was worn by a student
model at the showcase
event. The school was very
fortunate to be included in
this exciting event, alongside
three other local Secondary
Schools, which also included
a tour of the Bob and
Roberta Smith exhibition
‘Art is Your Human Right’
which is currently on at
the Gallery .This is the first
time Frederick Bremer’s
GCSE Art students have
had the opportunity to be
involved in an external
exhibition therefore the Year
11’s are incredibly fortunate
to have had this one off
experience to enable their
own work to be publicly
exhibited …. the first of many
to come we hope!
Year 11 trip to see street art and
the National Portrait Gallery
On 20th October the Year
11 art students went on an
exciting trip which started
in east London, near Brick
Lane, where they spotted
and photographed a variety
of street art as part of their
GCSE Identity project. The
staff were very impressed at
the way the students found
so many interesting examples
in unusual places and at how
the activity greatly increased
their observational skills. We
then went to the National
Portrait Gallery and on our
way came across a street
artist at work using the ‘grid’
technique which the students
have been looking at whilst
studying portraiture. At
the gallery, we looked at
portraiture from the Tudor
times right up to the present
day and saw examples of
many different techniques
used in these works. This
was a highly inspirational
trip extending year 11’s ideas
for Unit 1, GCSE, Identity
project and all 32 students
were exceptionally behaved.
Year 9 Dada project
The year 9 art students
have been studying the
Dada Movement and how
the distinctive Dada style
was influenced by the situation during WW1. They
created their own ‘Dadaist
Poetry’ before studying
the artwork of Hannah
Hoch and other Dada
artists who used collaged
images to create their
work. The year 9 students
are currently finishing off
their own Dada Creatures
using this technique of
photomontage and we are
pleased to be able to show
some of the results here
and around the school
soon.
Year 9 girls shoot for
success
On Monday 16th November,
Frederick Bremer’s Year
9 female basketball team
played against Lammas
School. At the start of the
game, we were losing by five
points. For some reason, we
were getting a lot of fouls,
probably because we were so
passionate about getting the
ball! Eventually, we started to
work together as a team and
came up with a better game
plan. During the first half of
the game, we observed how
they played and we began
to plot tactics that would
work well with our skills. All
of the girls who played in the
basketball game are also on
the netball team and we kept
telling ourselves ‘play it like
netball’, because we work
really well as a team in netball. We started winning by
2 points at the beginning of
the second half of the game.
We pushed ourselves even
further because we wanted
to ensure that we won and
thankfully, we did! With a lot
of sweat, effort and cheering!
Final score: 19-15
Year 9 students learn about the Holocaust
during a special visit
A special assembly was
held whereby a local
Holocaust survivor, Harry
Olmer, came in to tell
them his life story and
personal experience of
The Holocaust. Harry was
born in 1927 in Poland.
Soon after the Nazis
occupied Poland, Harry
and his family moved to a
small town where Harry’s
grandmother lived. Here,
they were forced to work
for the Germans every
day until 1942 when
all the Jews from the
area were taken away.
Harry and his brother
and father were sent to
Plaszow concentration
camp where Harry
worked on a railway line.
From here, he was sent
to Skarzysko Munitions
Factory where he was
forced to work pouring
liquid sulphur into bomb
shells for the German
Army. Later, in 1943, Harry
was sent to Buchenwald
concentration camp where
he stayed for two weeks
working in a quarry. He
was then transported
to Schleiben and then
on to Theresienstadt in
April 1945. Here, he was
liberated by Russian troops
on 8th May. In August 1945,
Harry was brought to the
UK as part of an initiative
of the Central British Fund
for Jews to allow 1,000
child Holocaust survivors
into the country. After a
period of recuperation in
Windemere, he moved
to Glasgow. Despite not
knowing any English
when he arrived, Harry
completed his Higher
exams in 1947 and later
qualified as a dentist.
Harry later married and
has four children. Harry
is 88 and retired from
dentistry only two years
ago! He continues to share
his experiences during
the Holocaust with young
people.The students
conducted themselves
maturely and respectfully
whilst listening to Harry.
They were gripped by his
testimony and came up
with excellent questions
to ask him. We are sure
that Harry’s testimony will
stay with the students and
help them to remember
why it is so important to
remember the Holocaust.
The Year 9 students will
be learning about The
Holocaust for the next
few weeks in their History
lesson and build on the
knowledge that they
gained from the talk. They
will be answering the
question ‘How should we
remember The Holocaust?’
and designing their own
museum style exhibition
that reflects their
interpretation of the
events of the 1930s and
1940s.

Year 7 and 8 Trip to Cologne
On Wednesday 9th
December, 37 students
from Years 7 and 8, along
with 4 excited members of
staff, travelled to Cologne
to experience the worldfamous German markets
and it was definitely an
unforgettable experience!
We left school on
Wednesday evening, and
both students and staff
were in a festive mood as
we quickly arrived at Dover,
ready to board the ferry
across to Calais. For many
students, this was their
first time on a ferry and the
excitement in the air was
palpable. After a somewhat
choppy journey across
the Channel, we reached
Cologne early on Thursday
morning. Once there, it was
straight to the Christmas
markets by the Cologne
Cathedral and time for some
Christmas shopping! The
students were able to put
their German to the test and
they certainly were up to the
task, ordering Bratwurst, hot
chocolate and other gifts in
fluent German!
Following the markets, we
visited the Lindt chocolate
factory to learn all about
how the chocolate is made
and of course, sampling a
cheeky biscuit or two dipped
in fresh and warm chocolate!
Before leaving, we had to visit the shop, where students
and staff alike were able to
buy enough chocolate to
keep us going until next year.
It was then time to visit the
Cologne Olympic Sports Museum, with students able to
see and interact with sports
memorabilia from a range of
previous Olympic Games –
we even had time for a quick
game of football, capped off
by a memorable goal from
Mr Anastasi!
After heading back to the hotel to freshen up, we headed
to the Gildenhaus restaurant,
where it was time to sample
traditional German Schnitzel
or Bratwurst – delicious!
We then ventured out into
Cologne to experience more
German markets, which was
a unique experience. There
was time for more Bratwurst,
as well as a chance to buy
souvenirs for family and
friends back home and the
opportunity to go on the
Ferris wheel, which offered
amazing views of Cologne
and its cathedral.
The group woke up bright
and early on Friday morning
to refuel on breakfast, before
getting back on the coach
and returning to London,
again enjoying the sights
that Germany, Belgium and
France has to offer. Although
the journey may have
seemed long, the students
were mature and responsible
enough to ensure that their
behaviour remained of the
highest level throughout and
they were a great credit to
the school. What a fantastic few days and a trip that
surely none of the students
will forget in a hurry!

Year 10 Construction
Congratulations to the
year 10 WJEC Construction
and the Built Environment
students for their dedicated and self-motivated start
to their practical assessment. In just 3 hours they
have built from scratch
a stud-partition wall on
which they will then attach
plasterboard, plumb in a
fully functioning basin and
paint the entire fixture.
Every pupil in the group
has worked independently,
consolidating what they
have learnt in class and
demonstrating their skills
and development even
further. Keep up the good
work!

“On the 5th December
2015, a group of children
set off on a journey to
dominate the FLL (First
Lego League) and come
out victorious.” Njabu 7F
“This essential but
amazing event has been
the most fantastical event
not just I, but we all have
participated in. This would
not have happened if it
wasn’t for all the other
members: Njabu, Adnaan,
Samuel,
Hanzala, Bilal, Stanley,
Kashaan, David and
finally, me.” Ben 7B
“This club has been a big
opportunity for the year
7s and 8s to learn many
skills such as coding
and building using Lego
bricks. This club has
brought out everyone’s
love for Lego. As I have
done this club for 2 years
it has gotten better each
year. Even if we don’t
bring the win home it
has been a
pleasure and I would
certainly do it again next
Oxbridge interviews
for Frederick Bremer’s
alumni
Staff are awaiting news from
7 former pupils
recently given interviews at
either Oxford or Cambridge
Universities. The pupils left
FB in September 2014 and
are clearly thriving. Charlie
Strickland told staff at
Frederick Bremer ‘Thanks for
the support, the
grounding given at this
school has helped us reach
for the stars’. Mr Larkin has
said how proud he is of the
students and their
accomplishments and wished
them every success.
year. Wish good luck to
me and my team for FLL
Championship. The next
time you see us we will be
the champion of FLL and
bring home the
trophy of epicness.” Adnaan 8E
As part of D&T’s Lego
Challenge/Robotics after
school club, we went on
a trip to the Imperial War
Museum, Duxford, to take
part in a competition with
other children, mostly
from other schools across
the region. The trip took
place on Saturday 5th December, led by Mrs Sayegh
(Head of D&T). The pupils
involved have been working with Lego and robots
to complete a series of
challenges as set out by
First Lego League. Regardless of the outcome, we
know the pupils had a terrific time and be rewarded
for their hard efforts with
a great day out.
Calling all future Doctors
On Monday 16th November
2015, Dr Patrice Baptiste came
to Frederick Bremer School
to speak to some of our Year
11 pupils about going into
medicine. Patrice is a qualified
Doctor who studied at UCL
university and she was able
to give valuable information
to our pupils regarding the
routes that are available to
get into the field of medicine.
The students were granted the
opportunity to ask
questions regarding the
excellent profession that
Patrice is currently in. It’s not
often that someone in the
medical field comes into a
school to give a talk about a
career in medicine so we were
incredibly grateful to have
Patrice at our school. Coming
from an inner London school
(Holy Family Catholic School),
Patrice is very much an
inspiring young lady and that
was evident through her
presentation. Patrice explained
to me that she believes it is
important to give back to the
youth of today; in the hope
that they may feel
empowered and
encouraged to follow a career
path in medicine or any other
profession. She reminded the
students that with hard work
and a great deal of willpower,
virtually anything is possible!

School Uniform
Students are expected to wear school uniform at all times and a high standard of dress is required. Experience has
shown that the wearing of uniform is a significant factor in creating a sense of pride in the school and in
encouraging the kind of spirit we wish to develop. At Frederick Bremer, we believe that school uniform is important, providing
a school identity and demonstrating equality amongst pupils. Students designed the uniform and school logo.

Other important points
A school blazer is compulsory and must be worn at all times. A school jumper is optional and may be worn under a blazer but
may not be worn instead of a blazer.
Boots may be worn to school in bad weather but must be changed for school shoes on arrival at school.
Coats and hats can be worn to and from school, but are not permitted in the school building during the school day.
A large formal style school bag is compulsory (big enough to carry A4 books)
Boys’ trousers should be worn on the waist.
Girls are permitted to wear light make up. Nail polish and acrylic nails are not permitted.
Trainers may only be worn outside the school building.
Discreet jewellery may be worn i.e. simple necklace, 1 small pair of plain gold or silver coloured stud earrings. Other piercings
(i.e. nose studs, tongue studs) and any visible tattoos are not permitted; these will be considered to be a serious breach of
the behaviour policy.
Hairstyles should be suitably formal and not draw unnecessary attention to the pupil. Significant hair colouring or shaving of
hair (including patterns) is not permitted.
Watches are encouraged.
The above is not an exhaustive list as there will always be new fashion trends and fads. Pupils should always aim to dress in
a formal professional way and any new inappropriate uniform issues will be addressed promptly by the school if necessary.
Frederick Bremer in association with Eat or Heat collects food tins
to feed families in need. To contribute non-perishables/tins please
leave items in our Eat or heat red container located in the foyer.

please contact: Mrs Deere on 020 8498 3340 on the

know your child is safe and accounted for. If your child
has to take time out of school for an appointment could
you please provide us with evidence. Pupils will not

possible, of course appointments should be made outside
the school day.
