A safe haven for cows in
West Mambalam
The Gowshala in Kasi Viswanathar Koil Street, West
Mambalam is a safe haven for
cows.
According to V. Gopalakrishnan (Trustee), the Gowshala plays an important role
in protecting old, sick and abandoned cows from going to
slaughterhouses. The Gowshala offers a perfect retiring
place, where these cows are
not just taken care of, but also
worshipped by devotees.
Though it has a capacity for
only 60 cows, 115 cows are
Page 3
sheltered at present. The population increased as a number
of calves were born and they
cannot be abandoned, said
Gopalakrishnan. “We have
eight helping hands to tend to
the Gowshala,” he added.
K. Swaminathan (manager)
said that it was started 33
years ago. “To start with, we
had just three cows as most
houses in those days had their
own domestic cows. But with
the changing times, most
people left these animals in the
gowshala,” he added.
The cows undergo medical
check-up once in three months.
Vaccination for foot and mouth
disease is administered once in
six months.
Milk from the cows is distributed to the temples nearby and
to a special school on Srinivasa
Pillai Street. Rest is sold to
fund the Gowshala, he said.
The Gowshala is supported
by donations, he said. Anyone
willing to donate or perform
Gowpuja may contact Swaminathan in 94441 25514.
Decoys, CCTV
cameras to aid vigil
in shopping hubs
With Deepavali fast approaching, the city police are
gearing up to provide security
to shoppers who throng T.
Nagar. Over 400 police personnel and home guards will be
deployed.
Three watch towers are being erected and 28 CCTV cameras will be installed at sensitive locations for surveillance.
To alert shoppers, the police
are also planning to screen
short videos of different criminal modus operandi, including
attention diversion methods.
According to an official, 10
woman constables will be used
as decoys. They will walk
around wearing fake gold chains
to lure chain snatchers.
A dedicated mobile number
will also be displayed in various
parts of T. Nagar so residents
can complain about criminal
acts, he said.
Big digital display boards
playing crime prevention messages will be erected at busy
junctions.
Shop owners have been told
to ensure the working of the
CCTV cameras in their shops.
The fire department will also
be fully geared up for any emergencies.

Police tighten vigil at Kannadiga
owned businesses
By Our Staff Reporter
The city police tightened security at establishments, especially
eateries owned by Kannadigas, after a group attacked Data Udipi
restaurant in MGR Nagar on Oct. 7.
Police arrested four persons from Jafferkhanpet who were involved in the attack.
After the news that former CM J. Jayalalithaa was denied bail by
the high court, a group of AIDMK functionaries gathered outside the
restaurant and asked the owner to pull down the shutters.
Before the customers could leave and the employees could pull
down the shutters, the group hurled stones at the restaurant,
breaking window panes and forcing customers to scramble out for
safety. A police officer said the four men arrested were not AIADMK
members but accompanied party supporters who raised antiKarnataka slogans outside the restaurant.
Senior officers decided to increase policing in areas near restaurants and other establishments run by Kannadigas in view of the
perceived threat to them from AIADMK supporters.
The four were arrested after a complaint filed by the restaurant’s
owner. Employees of the restaurant identified the culprits.
