BITS OF NEWS
October 12, 2014
EIGHTEENTH Sunday after pentecost
In Isaiah we are given a vision of the great feast to come, when God will wipe away death
forever. In Jesus’ parable about a great banquet, those invited do not come, so the
invitation is extended to others. In our liturgy God spreads a table before us. Even amid
anxiety and hardship we rejoice in the peace of God which surpasses all understanding.
With great joy we feast at the table of the Lord, and we go forth to share the wonderful
invitation with others hungering and thirsting for the abundant life of God.
Jesus tells a parable indicating that the blessings of God’s kingdom are available to
all, but the invitation is not to be taken lightly.

shepherding ministry
The Shepherding Ministry will be celebrating its one year anniversary on
November 1 at 11:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
Brunch will be served as our “Thank You to the Saint Peter Shepherds.” Please attend.
Fellowship committee news
The Fellowship Committee needs your help. The coffee hours for both services are our main
weekly “fellowship” gathering. It takes many “HELPING HANDS” to make this fellowship
function from week to week. Your help is needed to bring snacks to share (and help cleanup) at the coffee hours. There is a sign-up sheet for each service on the Fellowship Bulletin
Board in the Fellowship Hall. Pick a week and sign up! Any questions? Call Paula Minges,
448-1817.
community resource fair
Sacred Heart Catholic Church is organizing a Resource Fair on October 14, from 9:00
a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The target audience is seniors, veterans, immigrants, the hungry,
the homeless, the unemployed/underemployed, those living in homes in need of repair, and
those in need of health care in our community. At the Resource Fair, attendees will be able
to talk to representatives from 25 government and non-profit agencies who can explain
their programs and services and, in many cases, enroll people in programs that meet their
needs. Free flu shots will be available (thanks to New Hope Clinic and Walgreens), and a
light lunch will be served. Flyers for the Resource Fair are in the church. You are cordially
invited to visit the Resource Fair to see how it is going and partake of a light lunch.
FLU SHOT CLINIC
Thank you for participating in the immunization clinic held on Monday, October 6. There
were 35 congregation members who received the flu shot. Thank you to the Brunswick
County Health Department for coming to the church to administer the shots. Stay Healthy!
another flu shot option
For those who have not received flu shots, there are many local venues. Walgreens is
offering flu shots in affiliation with the United Nations. For each shot given locally, a free
shot will be given to someone in a developing nation. This program runs until October 13.
CALLING ALL BAKERS- AGAIN!!
Due to the huge success of last year’s Pumpkin Bread Fundraiser for the Food Pantry, we’re
going to repeat the event again this year on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16. Last year, 5
churches of the Inter-Church Fellowship joined together and raised $3,651 for the Pantry,
which included $900 in supplemental funds from Thrivent. And, in five years, that amount
has grown to over $22,250! Unfortunately, supplemental funds won’t be available from
Thrivent this year, so your assistance with the baking becomes even more important!
Beginning next week, there will be an orange sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall, and a
very simple recipe will also be provided. If you’ll be out of town on November 16, the bread
can be prepared ahead and refrigerated or frozen. New members, this is a great way to get
involved in the outreach efforts of our church! Can I count on YOU ? ? ?

sacred journey: encountering the spirit
ladies sacred circle
The sacred circle is an ancient form of gathering to share stories, experiences and faith and
to find greater depth in your relationship with other sisters on the journey. The sacred
circle is built upon the experience of “Heart Listening.” We have started a new season of
the sacred circle and will meet again on October 31, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at the home of
Judy Bowers. Please bring a special item that has a story that you might like to share. All
are welcome.
meditative yoga at saint peter: sacred time
Every Monday at 10:30 a.m., we offer Meditative Yoga in the sanctuary. We are so
blessed to have Ellie Hill as our instructor. Ella is a master yoga teacher and has
been providing the class here at Saint Peter for the past 6 years. Ella has done
extensive training at Duke in the area of senior yoga and gears this class for that
purpose as well as sacred practice. It is a low key, relaxing format. Ella’s energy
and humor make this class one of the best in the Southport area. Ella will be
teaching at Duke this year as well. All are welcome! Please bring a mat or blanket
with you. A free will love offering is accepted. Hope to see you there. Class
resumes on October 27.
Thank you from the
Navajo/apache mission team
The Navajo/Apache Mission Troup would like to thank all of you for participating in our
dinner and presentation of our trip. Everyone has been so supportive. That night we raised
over a thousand dollars. We are continuing our work by buying the Hope Center a new
stove and a wood stove for Deborah and Veldon to provide heat. We also plan on sending
socks, underwear, mittens and scarves for the winter. A gift card at Walmart will also be
purchased for food so they can continue to feed the hungry and homeless.
This trip was a great experience for our team and we all feel the blessings and prayers that
come from our congregation.
May God’s peace be with you all,
The Navajo/Apache Mission Team

FILM AND LITERATURE SERIES
In order to observe the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, John Whiting,
professor emeritus, SUNY Orange, will present an October program entitled All Quiet on
the Western Front: Novel and Film. He will examine how Erich Maria Remarque’s novel
(1928) reveals the daily lives of German soldiers who faced combat in the trenches of The
Great Way and then how the first sound film adaptation (1930), which won Academy
Awards for Best Film and Best Director, reflects the intent of the book.
This two-part event is scheduled for Harper Library on Tuesday and Thursday, October
21 and 23 from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Registration began at Harper on Monday,
October 6. Enrollment is limited to 30. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of
the novel. Sponsored by Friends of the Library Southport/Oak Island, this program is free
and open to the public.
