THE PARISH OF SAINT MARTHA WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO BOB MORRIS, OUR NEW YOUTH MINISTRY COORDINATOR LOW-GLUTEN HOST Available upon request before Mass in the sacristy 2 St. Martha Church - 522 THROUGH THE AMPLE OPEN DOOR OF THE PEACEFUL COUNTRY BARN, A SUNLIT PASTURE FIELD WITH CATTLE AND HORSES FEEDING, AND HAZE AND VISTA, AND THE FAR HORIZON FADING AWAY. Walt Whitman’s poem, “a Farm Picture”, is beautiful. Who wouldn’t want to repose in that setting – watching the swish and stomp of the horses’ tails and hooves as they feed on the wet green grass. Having never been a farmer, it seems ideal – picturesque of any small farm in Jersey or Pennsylvania. Yet I imagine farmers themselves would laugh at my idealism – for it takes a lot of work, before dawn and behind the scenes to arrive at that moment of cattle and horses feeding together. In the gospel this week Jesus paints a picture of what God’s kingdom is like – it’s like a great wedding banquet with everyone eating together. Although picturesque, the reality is far from ideal – those invited wouldn’t come. In the ancient world, a king would – multiple times – invite people to the banquet. These guests wouldn’t respond right away, for they would want to see who else was being invited before they committed themselves. . If they didn’t care for the guest list – they stayed home. This is happening in the Gospel parable and it’s the source of the King’s outrage. Jesus’ vision of heaven is one of a great gathering of people – of all people. All are welcome, and they should want all others to join them. This, like the farm, requires a lot of work – a lot of rolling up our sleeves and working alongside others in the mud and straw. Jesus himself was born in a stable – was committed enough to working alongside us as one of us, and he was blessed to find Mary and St. Joseph open enough to work alongside him too in the stable. Since farming requires a lot of listening to the Farmer- to know how and where to plant – what to build and what to tear down and how to integrate the various elements of farm life towards the good of the whole farm, let’s do the same here at St. Martha’s Let’s commit this week to being a bit more welcoming and eager to work alongside each other. First in our families, then in our marriages and parish. Often individuals in families can be zipping along each in his/her own orbits. Let’s brave the hard work of making time to come together – together for a meal, or a movie, or as a whole family going to one of your children’s games or recitals. Please brave too the hard work of marriage and make time to be with your hus- band or wife. Often I hear couples say they only have a few minutes nightly to be with each other – well roll up those sleeves, grab that marker, and block out some time for each other together. It is worth it, and the rest will come in time. Let’s also brave the hard work of coming together as a parish, How do we start? With prayer. (p.s. Go Vikes) PRAYER: Dear Lord, the Scriptures describe your desire to gather your people together as a shepherd gathers his sheep. Help my family to come together more/ my spouse and I to come together more /my parish to come together more this week and enter more fully the life of your kingdom. I ask this, Jesus, in your name. Amen. St. Martha – pray for us. 3 St. Martha Church - 522 ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Organizations ANNULMENT MINISTRY: please contact the office to learn more. 732-295-3630. The youth choir will now hold their practice on Friday afternoons from 4:30 pm-5:30 pm. This will commence on Friday, Oct. 17th. Over the past several years, when our youngsters reached the 6th grade level in Religious Ed, the Wednesday practice interfered with the 6th Grade Religious Ed class schedule. Our young people had to either forgo choir totally, split their time between choir & class, or go on a home study in order to fulfill both commitments. We found this to be unacceptable on both sides. We made this decision: 1) To make sure our young people get the necessary class time they need, and 2) To ensure that our youth receive the required practice time necessary to be part of the Music Ministry, and sing Our Lord’s Praises. Our special thanks goes to the parents who have been so co-operative in getting the cherubs to rehearsal. God created each of our young people in His own image. Their unique senses of humor, their smiling faces, and their beautiful voices have touched all our hearts. It is out of True LOVE for them that we make this change in order to have a more cohesive group. They who sing pray twice!
