The goal of the project has been to restore and enhance mangrove habitat and associated natural resource systems by improving hydrology at the site. Pockets of the mangrove forest have exhibited signs of both stress and die-off, principally due to a reduced tidal prism. Gradual closure of tidal creeks can cause impounded conditions that adversely affect mangroves. Restoration of the site aims to improve the hydrological regime, reverse the decline of the mangrove forest and provide additional nursery and forage habitat for local fish species. In addition, oyster reef habitat has been created to provide enhanced shelter and forage habitat for fish and invertebrates. To watch a time lapsed video of the Giant’s Camp project, please click here. Important: A bus to the education facility will be provided so you must be at the boat ramp parking lot ON TIME (11:15AM—11:30AM). A boxed lunch will be provided. Please be advised that this event will be held outside so it is recommended that you wear closed toed shoes and pants. Page 2 TBAEP Members Share Knowledge with Stetson Law Students Thanks to current and former TBAEP board members and leaders, upper level students at Stetson University College of Law gained insight into the environmental profession this past month. TBAEP member and Adjunct Professor of Law Christopher Hunter teaches Environmental Practice at Stetson. He wanted to help his students learn about the work of the environmental professionals who might one day be his students’ colleagues, expert witnesses, consultants, or partners. He also wanted to help his students get connected with the right professional community. No better way to achieve those objectives than working with the leadership of TBAEP! In late August and early September, each law student was connected with a current or former TBAEP board member or leader. The law student spoke with the TBAEP member about their work, expertise, and career path. They spoke about the ways in which non-lawyer environmental professionals work with lawyers. They discussed fact investigation, business decision-making, and the future of the environmental profession. The students then shared what they learned from each TBAEP member with their classmates, which resulted in a good baseline of community knowledge as the semester got underway. Thank you very much to all who participated. The law students found the experience invaluable, and many of them are looking forward to connecting with other TBAEP members at upcoming events. Many thanks to all the volunteers who participated in the Annual Hillsborough River & Coastal Cleanup 2014 on Saturday, September 20th. TBAEP coordinated the cleanup along the eastern shoreline of Old Tampa Bay at Al Palonis Park. Despite some nasty weather leading up to the cleanup, we had approximately 30 people come out to participate and many folks took the opportunity to include family and friends in the cleanup effort. As usual, the park itself was well maintained, but we still ended up removing several hundred pounds of trash from the shoreline area and the surrounding neighborhood. KTBB is still compiling this year’s data, but last year’s event attracted 4,000 +volunteers who tended to over 70 sites throughout Hillsborough County. At current tally, the cleanup efforts removed over 6,000 lbs. of litter and debris from our counties shorelines, parks, roadways and neighborhoods. Additional details regarding the national cleanup efforts and summaries of the recovered materials to date are posted at the Ocean Conservancy. Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful recruits 400 high school and college students to come together for a day of learning. There are several guest speakers and educational presentations throughout the day that focus on different local ecological issues. Students will learn about environmental sustainability, water quality, waste reduction, recycling, conservation, composting, energy reduction, and the effects of litter. The students who attend this conference leave with more knowledge of their community and how they can make a difference. This year, we would like to see a growth in attendance, and are seeking input from committee members about bringing in new and engaging speakers from different environmental fields to give presentations and workshops, as well as creating a new training session for teachers (something we have not done before). We know how supportive TBAEP is of exposing students to environmental career paths, and this would be a perfect leadership opportunity for many current members to seize. As a committee, we’re looking to host the first meeting in early September, and would meet once a month until the event in March 2015. If you are interested in becoming a committee member please contact Dory Estrada [email protected] or visit the KTBB website for additional information.
