You can choose your sexual identity and change it as often as you want. You can choose your “preferred gender pronoun”—do you want to be referred to as he, she, his, him, “ze,” “hir,” or any number of possibilities. Facebook, a large social media platform, typifies this societal trend by providing a blank box where users can prescribe the gender pronoun that they would like to show up on their public profile. Pick one up as you leave the Service Sermon Series: Questions Jesus Asked Sermon schedule on web: “Featured Events” at www.TFCAnglican.org. Search/download new or archived sermons (text and audio) from “Sermons” on the home page. The week before, another major Post article described a young college freshman who does not want to be described as a girl but not as a boy either. She doesn’t feel comfortable as a “he” or a “she” but perhaps as “they.” Transgender books for children are beginning now to be published. Whereas we saw the publication of Heather Has Two Mommies a couple of decades back, now Heather has two genders. Gracefully Greyson, about a 12 year old boy undergoing sexual transition comes out next month. Alex As Well, coming out in January, is about a conflicted male transitioning to female. More is on the way. These are intended to gain the sympathies of young readers on behalf of people who believe they are “trapped in alien bodies.” Every effort will be made to mainstream such publications. “New Office” Tours Oct 19 & 26 Oct 12: Do You Want to Get Well? The Washington Post last week had a front page article about the challenges facing transgendered students—they want to be treated according to the sexual feelings they have, though their bodies represent an opposite reality. A major advertising campaign with the headline, “A male wants to shower beside your 14 year old daughter—are you alright with that?” has garnered much attention. High school athletics are highly gender specific but boys who identify with the opposite sex now want to compete on girls’ teams and vice versa. The huge issue at stake is “Is gender a biological fact or a social choice.” I am not making this up—we are facing challenges that no other cultures, no other century has ever faced, as we encounter the gender confusion wrought by those who believe “we are what we feel.” We should have great sympathy and concern for a young person who feels uncomfortable with their sexuality. It isn’t unusual for young teens to experience confusion in this area, and it is a fact that some babies on rare occasion are born whose sexuality is hard to discern. However, from the very beginning scripture teaches us that God created human beings as male or female, and gender is essential to God’s creation order. People have differing degrees of feelings about their own sexuality and about their attraction to the opposite sex. RECTOR’S MESSAGE (continued from cover) However, we are embodied creatures and our bodies tell us who we are, even when we may be confused. To deny the importance of gender or to embrace a sort of gender fluidity goes against God’s order. We have the challenge and opportunity, in a world increasingly confused about these things, to speak a clear word and proclaim a clear gospel that offers not jut salvation but moral guidance, moral sense as well. Each Service time will need at least 12 people who will be assigned in teams of two to pray during one Service, once every 6 weeks, so we’re looking for 36 people total.
