Bishop O’Connell is not available, and at those times we use Falls
Church High School as our alternate site. Normally when there is a
change of venue, we will notify the congregation via e-mail along with
an announcement on the website and here, on the back of the Weekly. Questions Jesus Asked
If you are attending TFCA and do not receive mailings or e-mails from
us, you may not be in the database. You can fill out a Parishioner

Our nation is seriously divided – divided by worldview as
well as political persuasion. On the one hand are those who
hold faith, self-control, marriage, faithfulness, integrity,
gratitude, the sanctity of human life as of paramount
importance, while on the other hand the “new” virtues are
freedom of choice, non-judgmentalism, convenience, authenticity, sexual liberty.
Electoral swings like this present one do not necessarily imply that one worldview is now more popular than the
other, but that the great middle group of voters who vote
mostly on the basis of “which candidates do I think will be
best for me and my needs now?” have shifted their perspective again.

Another election is now over and we should pause to reflect
on what it means. It is a reminder of the unusual freedom
our founders bequeathed us to choose our own rulers. This
election is, of course, significant in that it represents a large
shift in the balance of power between political parties.
However, even though a talented new wave of leaders will
now come to our city, determined to make public policy
changes, this in itself is no guarantee that we will now move
beyond the gridlock Congress has recently experienced.
Of course, lawmakers can bring about societal change but
perhaps not as effectively as certain individuals whom God
raises up who have a peculiar charisma and power to greatly influence others for good, like Pope John Paul II or Martin Luther King, and the devil raises up influential leaders as
well, for evil. Change agents may be in business, the media,
the arts or religious life or in the academy or science. Nowadays motion picture stars exercise enormous influence. I
believe the home, the church, the academy, and the arts in
addition to the world of politics are the spheres which have
the greatest power to produce individuals and communities
that will have the greatest impact on our nation’s future.
If in our church we can continuously draw the connection
between personal Christian faith and public life, and if we
do not fail to disciple our youth, spiritually and intellectually
preparing them to be “pilgrims” and “soldiers” for Christ,
then from the churches we are developing, godly young
change agents will emerge. This is part of our mission.

members, age 18 or older and are expected to be mature in faith, experienced
in serving the church, making regular contributions, taking Communion, and
confident of their unearned place in heaven by Jesus' grace-filled act of
redemption. Elected Vestry members serve for 3-year terms.

Healing Testimony
When I was 30 years old, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of psoriatic
arthritis that had the potential to disable me. I suffered chronic pain and walked
with a noticeable limp. I was a husband, father and provider and prayerfully
decided with my wife to take high-powered medications that came with warnings
of serious side effects. Thankfully, the Rx did stop the degeneration of my joints
and I was able to work effectively. Still, I lived with the pain, crushing fatigue and
side effects, such as mouth sores. I sought prayer in many settings, for many years,
including this church's Healing Prayer Ministry, but saw no breakthroughs. One
day a blood test showed an anti-inflammatory medication now off the market
had damaged my kidneys to less than half their capacity. A nephrologist (kidney
specialist) at GWU Hospital told me once I was below 25% we would need to
consider dialysis or a kidney transplant. She added that the best, though unlikely,
prognosis was stabilization because this type of damage is not reversible. I sought
more healing prayer. Six months later, I was back in the nephrologist's office,
observing a look of consternation on her face as she studied my latest lab report. I
braced myself for the news. She said my kidneys were on the low end of the
normal range, a shocking improvement. That was nine years ago. My kidneys
continue to improve (my internist sends my nephrologist the lab reports and says
she is “astounded”). Wait, there's more. After living with pain and Job-like mouth
sores for decades, God has gradually healed the arthritis. Working with my
doctors, I am entirely off of anti-inflammatories, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic
drugs, biologic injections, prescription pain medication and, of course, the nasty
side effects that come with them. I feel better than ever. The medical term is
"remission." I say the Lord is blessing the latter part of my life more than the first
(Job 42:12) with gentle, gradual healing. He has done it for me. He can do it for
you.

Marriage Mentoring at TFCA: If you’re having challenges in your marriage, you’re
not alone: TFCA Marriage Mentors are available to help. They are willing to come
alongside another couple, as friends not counselors, to talk about the joys and

Sermon Series: Questions Jesus Asked
“Who Am I?”
Scripture Readings: Luke 9:18-20; 1 John 4:7-21
The need for our day is “The Good Infection” at every level of society.
“Now the whole offer which Christianity makes is this: that we can, if we let
God have His way, come to share in the life of Christ. If we do, we shall then be
sharing a life which was begotten, not made, which always has existed and always will exist. Christ is the Son of God. If we share in this kind of life we also
shall be sons of God. We shall love the Father as He does and the Holy Ghost
will arise in us. He came to this world and became a man in order to spread to
other men the kind of life He has – by what I call “good infection.” Every Christian is to become a little Christ. The whole purpose of becoming a Christian is
simply nothing else.” (C.S. Lewis; Mere Christianity)
Jesus knew it was essential that we grasp who he is – “Who do you say that I
am?” (Luke 9:20)
The essential decision in Christian discipleship is to trust and obey Christ our Lord
in all things.
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
