Course details
Take your first steps to enter one of the fastest growing sectors in Australia. The Diploma of Early Childhood
Education and Care from TAFE Queensland East Coast will prepare you to work in a range of early childhood
settings, working with children to support their wellbeing, learning and development. The delivery supports the
implementation of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and National Quality Standard - both of
which form the basis of all learning and development that occurs in early childhood services across Australia.
For the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care we recommend students:
Are physically, mentally and emotionally healthy to respond appropriately to children's needs.
Have a reasonable level of fitness to cope with standing, lifting, bending, twisting and reaching.
Can remain focused while children learn through play experiences and have the ability to anticipate difficulties
or dangerous situations and intervene quickly.
Can meet the duty of care obligations, including supervision and assisting children with their self-care needs.
Have the ability to interact and communicate in a calm and caring manner
Can interact effectively with family members and staff and have basic conflict resolution skills.
Enjoy working in a professional setting and are punctual, reliable, show initiative and can take direction.
This qualification is offered via a number of study modes including face-to-face classes, weekend workshops and
flexible delivery (self-directed learning)
Upon completion of the Diploma, you will become qualified to supervise other staff and volunteers. You will be
equipped with the necessary skills to plan, implement and manage programs in early childhood services (0-12
years) in accordance with licensing, quality assurance and duty of care requirements.
Staff in children's services must follow legislation and service policies. You must work to ensure the health and
safety of the children in your care. You should have a positive non-judgmental approach to children and their
families.

This qualification is offered via a number of study modes including face-to-face classes, weekend workshops and
flexible delivery (self-directed learning). It is essential that students have regular access to a computer and reliable
internet service for completion of online assessments.

placement.

Entry requirements
Mandatory: Not applicable
Recommended: Successfully completed year 10 (or equivalent), or have relevant experience and/or qualifications
that indicate likely success in completing the course. You must be 17 years of age to be eligible for employment in
industry, according to State Government regulations. If you are under 17 you will need to have an interview with a
teacher prior to enrolment. If you do not have proficient report and assignment writing ability, including critical
thinking and referencing, it is advised that students attend our free Essential Skills Training course prior to the
commencement of study.
Blue Card: Commission for Children and Young People Act 2000 (Qld) contains a new law to help ensure that
people seeking to work with children are suitable. This is called 'the working with children check'. Any person
wanting to work in regulated employment, as a paid employee, a volunteer, or a person carrying on a regulated
business, will have to fill out an application form consenting to a criminal history check prior to his or her
appointment or engagement. Further details can be obtained from the Commission for Children and Young People

Vocational Placement until they hold a valid Blue Card
