About the Organizer
The course will be organized by the Department of Electronics Engineering of Indian School of Mines (ISM),
Dhanbad, a leading university in the service of nation offering a host of programmes since 1926. The Department of
Electronics Engineering, started as a supporting department in 1976 has today established itself as a strong faculty
department with highly qualified faculty members, in housed with well equipped state of the art laboratories, ample
computing resources and several R&D projects. At present the Department is in full pace to develop update facilities
in Wireless Communication and Signal Processing in collaboration with related industries. To know more about the
department, please visit at http://www.ismdhanbad.ac.in/electronics-engineering.
About the Workshop
Cognitive Radios (CR) are autonomous units with adaptable radio system parameters, the key technology addressing
dynamic and opportunistic access of licensed spectrum by secondary users. It is undoubtedly the next Big Bang in
high data rate wireless communication. The practical implementation of CR can be achieved by use of Software
Defined Radio (SDR) pushing digital implementation close to the antenna, replacing dedicated hardware with
software algorithms. The Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) family of products from NI is a popular lowcost platform for hardware-based CR research and test bed validations. It provides all high speed operation within a
FPGA with waveform specific features in CPU for flexibility of programming via LabView interfacing. The aim of
this workshop is to provide a unique experience of getting theoretical insights along with in-depth exposure of
simulation tools and hands-on-practical design of Cognitive Radio Systems. Besides a broad overview of the current
research trends in CR, the basics and toolkits of LabVIEW for deploying of wireless algorithms on real world RF
signals, experimenting with live-over the air signals, spectrum measurements and monitoring on USRP will be a
major part of the workshop with technical support from NI.
