English/Language Arts Resource Document- Quarter 2 Ninth Grade Unit 3: Honesty vs. Deception Focus: Media Literacy (with additional short literature tied to theme) Dates: October 20, 2014- October 31, 2014 Essential Question (If multiple options, pick the essential questions you wish to use): How does media show culture and values? What creative techniques are used to attract attention? What values, lifestyles, and points of view are represented in or omitted from the message? How might different people understand this message? Who created the message and why? ********* Unit 4: Personal Values Genre Focus: Informative Nonfiction (with additional short literature tied to theme) Dates: November 3, 2014- November 31, 2014 Essential Question (If multiple options, pick the essential questions you wish to use): How do writers convey purpose, position, and meaning in their work? ********* Unit 5: Hopes, Dreams, and Plans Genre Focus: Persuasive Nonfiction (with additional short literature tied to theme) Dates: December 1, 2014- December 18, 2014 Essential Question (If multiple options, pick the essential questions you wish to use): How do writers influence the social, political, and philosophical ideas of the time in which they live? Indicators covered in this quarter: 9-10.RL.3.1: Analyze and evaluate how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a work of literature, order events within it (e.g., parallel episodes), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise. 9-10.RL.3.2: Analyze how the author creates such effects as suspense or humor through differences in the points of view of the characters and the reader (e.g., created through the use of dramatic irony). 9-10.RN.2.1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what a text says explicitly as well as inferences and interpretations drawn from text. 9-10.RN.2.2: Analyze in detail the development of two or more central ideas over the course of a text, including how they interact and build on one another to provide a complex analysis. (See pacing guide for full description) 9-10.RN.3.2: Analyze in detail how an author’s ideas or claims are developed and refined by particular sentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of a text. 9-10.RN.3.3: Determine an author’s perspective or purpose in a text, and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that perspective or purpose. 9-10.RN.4.1: Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning. 9-10.RN.4.2: Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums (e.g., a person’s life story in both print and multimedia), determining which details are emphasized in each account. 9-10.RV.2.1: Use context to determine or clarify the meanings of words and phrases. 9-10.RV.2.3: Analyze nuances in the meanings of words with similar denotations. 9-10.RV.3.2: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a nonfiction text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; evaluate the effectiveness of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language of a court opinion differs from that of a newspaper). 9-10.W.3.1 Write arguments in a variety of forms.
