You incite us to hope, but we fall back into fear. You urge us to give freely, but we cling to what we have. You call us to watch at all times for you, but we grow lazy and self-absorbed. Forgive us. Increase our hope, enlarge our hearts, and keep us alert to the wonders you work in the world every day. For the sake of Jesus we pray. Amen. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: In a broken and fearful world, the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” PREACHING THIS MORNING We are pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. L. S. Mendenhall to our pulpit. There are those in our congregation who may remember when Dr. Mendenhall served as Associate Pastor to this church, from 1983 until 1986. The reverend will be attending today’s luncheon, at which time newer members of the congregation may introduce themselves. MUSICIANS THIS MORNING In addition to several voices added to our Chancel Choir this morning, we welcome and appreciate the talents of Hylton Cruickshank, who played bagpipes before the service; the brass quintet which consisted of Mike Bucalo, Tim Shaffer, Brenda Salas, Tom Hale, and Kerry Williams, and timpanist Kari Klier. Funds for the music today were underwritten in honor of a choir member. During our after-worship celebration, we will enjoy the music of “Lost & Nameless,” whose members include Patrick Conway, Chris E. Peterson, Kimberly Zielnicki, and Nathan Quiring; they are here in part by the gracious underwriting of the Texas Commission on the Arts. SPEAKING OF STEWARDSHIP We received the following inspirational message from W. W. Cherry: “Why do I pledge to the church? I find that I simply MUST in order to support the programs of the church which I find so compelling. I am passionate for the community of CPC.” ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY As our church celebrates its 175th anniversary, so do W. H. Bent and S. D. Richter celebrate the 20th anniversary of their wedding. Our congratulations to them, and our thanks as they have provided the flowers decorating our sanctuary this morning. CHURCH DIRECTORY The Session J. H. Moore, Moderator L. H. Stoddard, Clerk J. N.
