Target Audience
School nurses.
Overview/Purpose
Join us for our 13th annual school nurse conference, providing two days of continuing education for school nurses. The
majority of topics offered this year are based on the 2013 Annual School Health Services Report by the NC DHHS School
Health Unit which identifies school health service competencies. Participants can choose to come to one or both days, as well
as meet with exhibitors (day one only), and network with your colleagues.
Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
•Describe and share school nursing issues that impact local practice;
•Identify strategies to effectively address stress in school setting;
•Discuss the changing face of STIs/HIV in the South and NC;
•Identify the components of behavioral risk assessment and prevention for women at risk for violence, substance abuse and
pregnancy;
•Discuss the role of the school nurse in working with the diabetic school aged child, assessment, referrals, and parental
involvement;
•Integrate key components of lifestyle interventions in school settings;
•Identify the most common pediatric infectious diseases by system, their key symptoms, red flags in assessment and
preventative strategies;
•Describe the most common complications which occur in children with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) that should be recognized
by the school nurse;
•Discuss the most recent recommendations for disease prevention and health maintenance relevant to children with SCD;
•Participate in a parent/child panel to understand needs of parents and children with SCD;
•Describe clinical characteristics of asthma, age-appropriate anticipatory guidance, emergency preparedness, and referrals/
interventions; and
•Identify common gang signs, symbols and the warning signs of gang members.

Payment Policy: SR-AHEC requires full payment for all registrations prior to the program date. We no longer accept purchase
orders or supervisor’s approval signatures in lieu of payment. Access to workshop materials and handouts cannot be released until
payment is received. Early and regular rates will be determined by the date of receipt.
Credit
CNE: 13.5 contact hours will be awarded to participants who attend 100% of this educational event.
Partial credit is available by day: Day 1 - 6.5 contact hours, CNE; Day 2 - 7.0 contact hours, CNE AP#005-865
Southern Regional AHEC: Department of Continuing Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by
the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on
Accreditation.
At this time, speakers and planners have no conflicts or relevant relationships to disclose. If any are identified, they will be
announced at the beginning of the activity.
This program is being offered in cooperation with the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing.
Substitutes/Refunds/Transfers
Participants who register for the program and are not able to attend, may:
• Send a substitute;
• Cancel 48 business hours before the program and receive a voucher for 100% of the registration fee for use at a
future SR-AHEC program; or
• Cancel 48 business hours before the program and obtain a refund for 70% of the registration fee.
Cancellations less than 48 business hours before the program are non-refundable. Participants who register for a program and
do not attend will forfeit the full amount of the program registration fee.
