Your New Hartford Public Library is more
than just books. The Library is your
community center, constantly evolving to
meet the changing news of our community.
People of all ages use the Library to enrich
their lives. You come together for programs,
stop by just to enjoy meeting neighbours,
and increasingly take advantage of rapidly
expanding services available on computers,
smart phones, and other mobile devices.
The NHPL, Powered By Community, needs
your help to continue to grow our library.
There are many ways you can contribute:
• Make a monetary donation. All donations,
large and small, can be used to purchase
materials for our collection, to fund a
program, or purchase equipment. Talk to
Library staff today about personalizing
your donation-they might be given for a
birthday, anniversary, or special occasion,
or in memory of someone. All donations
tax deductible.
• Donate gently used books or CD’s to the
Friends’ book sale. They can be dropped
off at the circulation desk any time.
• Volunteer - we have opportunities for all
ages. Teens, this makes a great addition
to your resume or college application.
• Join the Friends of the Library
Your help will enable the Library to maintain
essential services, enhance collections and
programs, and continue to find new ways to
better serve the New Hartford Community.

A TREE FOR GROWTH

The Tree for Growth will enable anyone to personally help
the Library increase its book, DVD, and other materials
collection for your benefit. Each donation of $25.00 will
enable the donor to have their name and the name of a
newly purchased book hung on an ornament on the tree.
This is both a great way to honor your child’s successes,
birthdays, anniversaries, etc., as well as help our library keep
its collection up to date. Selections of materials will be made
by the librarians, but you can note a choice of fiction, non-fiction, large type or children’s materials. You may purchase an
ornament at the library and help our tree grow. All donations
are fully tax deductible and will be greatly appreciated.

NHPL serves the community in many ways. The library staff
delivers books to nursing homes and assisted living centers
(bi-weekly). The library also collects items for local food
banks and animal shelters (on-going). Food donation boxes
are located downstairs, close to the elevator.

just looking to have a good time
with friends, then this club is for you!
The library provides the LEGOS,
and you provide your imagination!

Rhyme Time for children who are 18 – 36
months old will be held on Tuesdays and
Thursdays at 10:30am. The five-week
session began on Tuesday, September 9,
and ends on Thursday, October 9. Rhyme
Time is an early literacy program of rhymes,
music, felt board stories, and finger plays.
The Library Play Group for children who
are 4 years old and younger will be held
at 10:30am on Mondays, October 6 & 27,
November 10 & 24, December 8 & 22. The
Play Group consists of a story, craft, books,
and play.
Baby Lapsit for children from birth to 18
months will be held on Mondays, October
20, November 3 & 17, December 1 & 15 at
10:30am. Lapsit is a language program of
social interaction and movement as well as
networking for the caregivers.
The Young Reader’s Book Club is for girls and boys 3rd
grade and older. We meet once a month on a Saturday at
10:00am from September through June. The book club will
meet on Saturday, Oct. 25, Nov. 22, and Dec. 13. Activities
include talking about the book, playing games, drawing, and
having fun! The books are available monthly at the circulation desk.
Story Time for children who are 3 – 5 years old will be held
on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30am. The five week session begins on Tuesday, October 21 and ends on November
20. Story Time consists of stories, crafts, and music.
NEW HARTFORD POLICE
READ TO CHILDREN
The New Hartford Police will continue to read to children on
Thursdays at 11:00am at the New Hartford Public Library.
Thank you to the officers who have taken time out of their

their knowledge of the college application
process from the beginning stages to the
end result of college admission.
Developing Your Career will be led by
Jenna Turman, Employer Relations
Coordinator/Career Counselor at Utica
College, on Tuesday, October 14, from
5:30 – 7:30pm. She will guide you through
the foundations of self-knowledge,
navigation, and networking to find and
land a successful career. Topics will include:
Career Assessments, Resumes/Cover Letters/Interviews, Networking, and
Social Media.
Ice Fishing, by John Pitarresi, will take
place on Tuesday, November 4, from
12:00 – 2:00pm in the Sammon Room. John
is a sports columnist at the Utica Observer
Dispatch and an avid fisherman and hunter.

BOOK SIGNINGS
Local Author Kyle Lince, Associate Professor of Computer and Web Development at
Mohawk Valley Community College, will be
at the New Hartford Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1:00 – 3:00pm to sign his
book Magyra. Magyra, a mind-bending tale,
supplies the reader with innovative characters and an adventure that is one of a kind.
Local author Wendy Humphreys will be at
the New Hartford Public Library on Sunday,
November 16 from 1:00 – 3:00pm to sign
her newest book Journey to the Viking Age,
which she wrote and illustrated. Wendy
will also bring her books Adventure in the
Emerald Isle and Searching for Christmas.
Wendy is an artist and has studied watercolors under W. Ralph Murray and others, and
has exhibited locally.
Local Author Jordan Mierek will be at the
New Hartford Public Library on Saturday,
Nov. 29, from 11:00am – 1:00pm to sign her
new novel Escape From Witchwood Hollow.
Jordan Elizabeth, formally Jordan Elizabeth
Mierek, can’t get enough of the woods and
some of her adventures have led to abandoned foundations. Exploring the rocks and
crumbling bricks sparked Jordan to imagine
who might have lived there before and that
train of thought carried her to a wicked legend and an enchanted hollow.

THE LIBRARY
October – Peter Ricci will display his watercolors in
October, beginning with a “Meet the Artist” reception on Monday, October 13, from 6:00 – 8:00pm. Peter has
studied with W. Ralph Murray, Kathy Kiernan, Annett Gurdo and Mary Berger. His works have been exhibited at the
Cooperstown Annual Art Show, Central Adirondack Art show,
MWPAI Sidewalk Art Show, Kirkland Art Center,
Utica Art Association show at SUNYIT, and the Plen Air Paint
Out at View in Old Forge. Presently many of his paintings
are at the Starving Artist Art Gallery in Old Forge.
November – Jo Ambrose and her Parkway Senior Center
students will exhibit their watercolors. Jo Ambrose was a
graphic artist for the Observer Dispatch. Jo is a member
of the Central NY Watercolor Society, and is also a private
instructor of oils.
Anita Miller will display papier tole at the library in
November. Papier tole uses paper to give pictures a
3D effect by cutting, shaping, and sculpting.
December – Robert Partridge will display his oils of Adirondack landscapes and railscapes. He has exhibited at the
Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute sidewalk show, the
Arts Center of Old Forge, SUNYIT, and throughout central
New York. His artwork has been published in the NY State
Conservationist magazine and with an article about growing
up as the Beaver River station master’s son in the Adirondack Life magazine.

FRIENDS OF
THE NEW
HARTFORD PUBLIC
LIBRARY
The purpose of the Friends of the New Hartford Public Library is to promote knowledge of the Library in terms
of its functions, resources, and services. Throughout the year we are visible as volunteers shelving books,
assisting at the Circulation Desk as needed, telephoning to notify you that the book you requested is in,
setting out sign boards of upcoming programs, updating our used book room which offers a variety of
materials for all ages, offering a reprinting of our Food for Thought cookbook of community and family recipes
plus roomy NHPL tote bags or NHPL mousepads all of which are on display and available for purchase.
Our main task is fundraising. So far this year we have been busy. March was a Taste of Russia, which offered
100 frozen bags of Russian food including dumplings, pierogies, ravioli, and pelmeni, all donated by our
Library Director, Elina Shneyder. There was music, costumes, Russian chocolates, a large crowd and we
sold out in 2-1/2 hours! Next was the Chocolate Lovers’ Bake Sale, then the raffle of a donated crocheted doll
bed plus a dream doll won by two delightfully happy grandmothers. The annual Ice Cream Social featured
an assortment of homemade cakes with/without ice cream, Bubbles the Clown, the New Hartford Citizens
Band, face painting and a very enthusiastic hula hoop contest. We were fortunate to defray costs through the
generosity of Stewarts Shops, Nicky Doodles, Jay-K Independent Lumber, Price Chopper, and Chanatrys.
All proceeds benefit the Joshua Turner Fund to provide materials and programs for toddlers to teens. Yet to
come is the Indoor Miniature Golf Tournament. For the cost of $5 play 18 holes of miniature golf designed by
talented and most imaginable community members while navigating through the aisles, win a prize or have
your name printed on the trophy, if you win that is! Then the Harvest Bake Sale, followed by the decorating of
the Mitten Tree with handcrafted mittens, hats, and scarves.
We spread the Friends outside the library in many other ways. Over the years mitten tree items have been
donated to UCP and the Thea Bowman House, games used previously in our Fun Fest are lent to Hughes
School to raise money for their fun fair, and remaining books from our overstocked book sale of out-ofcirculation books were distributed to the Literacy Center, Parkway Senior Center and MV Center for
Refugees.
Through your generosity and support the Friends contributed last year $2,500 to technology in the library and
presented a check for $10,000 of which $5,000 was for the Joshua Turner Fund and $5,000 designated in the
library. Busy? Yes. Need your help? Yes and it is always greatly appreciated. Come join us. New members
always welcome.

NHPL TODAY
In 2014, the community benefited from an
increase in the library’s hours of operation,
and we’re hoping to have our doors open
on Wednesdays starting January 2015. The
Library has been visited over 100,000 times
and it is only September!
Attendance at our Children’s Program
offerings reached a new high in 2014
(more than 430 children participated in our
summer reading programs). Students from
elementary to high school have enjoyed
various programs especially geared to them
including story times, game fun, craft programs and book discussions. Our new iPad
Crayon Kiosk allows children of all ages to
grow comfortable with new technologies in
educational, fun, and social ways.
Our collection, including an expanding set
of downloadable e-books and audio books,
now contains over 56,000 items, including
books, music, movies, and more. Your
library’s virtual services now provide access
to the Library’s collection wherever you are,
24/7, on your computer, smart phone, or
tablet. Read the latest issues of your favourite magazines
for free through the ZINIO link on our website. Powered by
Community, the New Hartford Public Library strives to deliver
quality library services at no cost for our patrons.
