Communion antiphon: Behold the eyes of the Lord are on those
who fear him, who hope in his merciful love, to rescue their souls
from death, to keep them alive in famine.
My Dear Friends,
At the time of Jesus the country of Israel was occupied by the
Romans, in some areas ruled by puppet kings such as the Herods,
in other areas more directly through a Roman governor such as
Pontius Pilate. There was a general dislike of the occupiers, but
some people, e.g. the tax collectors, made a good living out of them,
and it would be judged seditious to be seem to be openly critical
of them. This is the background to the questions Jesus is asked in
today’s gospel. If he says taxes should not be paid to Caesar he will
be accused of being a terrorist, if he says it is acceptable to pay the
taxes to him, he will be accused of betraying his country. As ever
Jesus takes the debate to a higher level. The coin he asks for has
Caesar’s head on it. It is his image and so belongs to him. But we
are made in God’s image and likeness. We belong to him and should
be more concerned about getting that relationship right.

shoebox with goodies to send to

box, most shoe shops are happy
to let you have one. The £3 for
transporting each box will again
be funded by the Christ the
