 Please be kind to those around you who may suffer
from allergies or asthma. Refrain from heavy applications
of perfume or cologne.
 As we enter cold and flu season, please be sensitive to
those who may not wish to shake hands during the Sign
of Peace. And remember to wash your hands frequently.

SPIRITUAL LIFE
“Vote Yes on 1” Signs - The Knights of Columbus have
"Vote Yes on 1" signs available in the vestibule. Please
take one (or more) and display in a prominent place.
Transportation to Polls - For any parishioner who does
not have transportation to vote in the current election, the
Knights will provide a ride to early voting during
October 20-30. To accommodate scheduling, please call as
early as possible: John Feurer at 598-1620.
Living Rosary - All parishioners are invited to participate
in a Living Rosary sponsored by the Knights of Columbus
and the Legion of Mary. The rosary will be in the Parish
Life Center on Monday, October 27, at 6pm and will be
followed by a pot luck dinner. If you have ever counted
the beads on your rosary, you will notice that there are 60.
It would be great if there could be one person there for
each bead! Bring your family and pray with us.
FIRST CORINTHIANS STUDY EXTENDED
Fr. Charlie will continue his class on the New Testament
book of First Corinthians on Tuesday, October 21, at
10:30am and 7pm. Class will meet in the church and last
no more than an hour and a half. Everyone is invited!

FAMILY HONOR LEADING & LOVING
St. Jude will host Family Honor’s Leading & Loving
program for parents of young children, newborn through
5th grade. Learn how to be a good role model, how virtue
is developed in children, and how to answer challenging
questions—all while instilling the beauty and truth of
Catholic teachings. Leading & Loving will be presented
in 2 sessions: Friday, November 14 (7-9pm) and
Saturday, November 15 (9am-2pm).No charge although
donations are requested, and childcare will be provided

ANNUAL BAKE SALE
FOR CATHOLIC CHARITIES
The next Grounds Work Day will be Saturday,
November 15, 8am to 12 noon. Thanks to all those who
come out each month to keep our landscape beautiful.
St. Jude Parish’s annual Bake Sale to
benefit Catholic Charities is coming up
soon: November 8-9. Your help is
needed. Here are 3 ways you can help!
 Donations are needed: Cakes, pies, breads,
cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and candies. Package
and label your donations by wrapping in plastic,
placing in a Ziploc bag, or using disposable pans.
Bring your baked items to the church vestibule
when you come to Mass that weekend.
 An overall Chairperson in needed. Duties include
set-up, overseeing money collected at each Mass
and providing change for volunteers, supervising
display of goods and prices marked, and making
sure there are volunteers to cover each Mass.
 Volunteers are needed to assist with sales before
and after all 6 weekend Masses.

Home Place, a residential facility for homeless men
and women living with HIV/AIDS.
VIRTUS TRAINING IN NOVEMBER
VIRTUS Training is required by our diocese for all adult
employees and volunteers who interact with parish or
school youth. The next 3-hour VIRTUS awareness
session will be held on Thursday, November 6, at 12
noon in the Parish Life Center. Please register by going

OLIVE WOOD SALES
On the weekend of November 29-30, our brothers and
sisters representing the Christian Catholic Families of
Bethlehem will sell crucifixes, religious artwork, and
rosaries—all made of olive wood native to Israel and
Bethlehem—in the church vestibule. With tourism
numbers down, Christian families in the Holy Land, who
depend on tourists, have been greatly affected. Sales of
these goods will help them very much and also give you
the opportunity to have something authentic from the
Holy Land. Please browse and buy if you can. It is for a
good cause and also a help to your personal devotion. Go

OCTOBER AT THE VIRGIN OF THE POOR
Marion Devotions will be held each Sunday in October
at the Virgin of the Poor Shrine, located in New Hope,
Tennessee. The Walk-Around-Rosary begins at 12:15pm

ENGAGED ENCOUNTER NOVEMBER 7-8
The next “Picture of Love” Engaged Couples Retreat will
take place on Friday evening and all day Saturday,
November 7-8, at St. Jude. This marriage preparation
program is a supplement to the couple’s marriage
formation with their parish priest. The program is
designed to help the couple gain a better understanding of
the joys and challenges of living the sacrament of
Matrimony in their day-to-day lives. Cost is $135 per
couple, and the retreat certificate is good for a $60
discount on a marriage license. The Retreat runs 7-10pm
on Friday evening and 9am to 6pm on Saturday. Meals
and Mass are included on Saturday, and each couple must
attend the entire program to receive their certificate.

COATS FOR CHRISTMAS
This year the Knights of Columbus are
conducting a parish-based "Coats for
Christmas" drive now through November 8-9. They will
collect adult-sized coats, jackets, sweaters, hoodies,
toiletries, and new socks and underwear. All donations
will go to the Chattanooga Homeless Center, the Ladies of
Charity, Tennessee Veteran Affairs, and the St. Vincent de
Paul Society. There will be a collection box in the outer

avoiding pregnancy, aids couples that have previously
experienced infertility, and can help identify underlying

A WORD FROM BISHOP STIKA
ON AMENDMENT ONE
One of the great privileges of living in a democracy is the
right of its citizens to vote. Although the Catholic Church
will never identify itself with any political community or
system, we can and must speak up in support of moral
issues. One such issue that we as Catholics will have an
opportunity to vote on November 4th is Amendment
One. This amendment is neither a Republican nor a
Democrat issue, but a moral and life issue of greatest
magnitude. A yes vote on Amendment One, a prolife
amendment, would neutralize the extreme interpretation
taken by the Tennessee State Supreme Court in 2000 in
which they declared that our State Constitution
guarantees the right to an abortion. Passage of this
amendment would restore back to the voters the “life”
decisions that were taken from them by the state court
decision. For this reason, I and my brother Bishops in
Nashville and Memphis wholeheartedly ask for your
support for “life” by voting for “Yes on One” this
November 4th.

Tomar las pláticas pre-bautismales para padres
(registrados en la iglesia de San Judas) y padrinos
(que los Padrinos sean Católicos y estén casados
por la iglesia) y separar la fecha del bautismo con
un mínimo de 3 meses de anticipación.
* Pláticas Pre-bautismales para padres y padrinos:

Matrimonios:
Traer las partidas de bautismo y confirmación recientes
(mínimo 6 meses) de cada uno de los contrayentes,
tomar las platicas pre-matrimoniales con Carlos (12
clases), fijar las fecha de la boda con un mínimo de 5
meses de anticipación
Confesiones: Todos los miércoles a las 6pm o
Sábados a las 4pm, o por cita previa. Por favor noten que
no todos sábados o miércoles hay confesiones en
español. Hablen con las oficinas o con el Padre antes
para asegurar que padre estará confesando si necesita
que sea en español.
Primera Comunión: La primera comunión se
hace en el segundo grado y requiere dos
años se preparación. Por favor apunten a sus
hijos para las clases en el primer grado.
Clases son todos los miércoles entre
septiembre y marzo a las 6.30pm
Catecismo: Se reunen todos los miercoles en a las

¿Es obligatorio pagar los impuestos? La pregunta
malintencionada de los doctores de Israel fue contestada
por el Señor con una hondura y en forma tan precisa y
brillante, que les dejó mudos. El pago de los impuestos a
Roma era considerado por algunos como
colaboracionismo con el poder extranjero y un desdoro
hacia Dios por parte del pueblo elegido. Decir que sí, era
desacreditarse ante el pueblo. Decir que no, se convertía
en un pretexto para denunciarlo ante la autoridad
romana.
“Pagadle al César lo que es del César, y a Dios lo que es
de Dios”. El cristiano ha de ser un ciudadano ejemplar,
dice en esencia Jesús. Hay que obedecer a las
autoridades legítimas, a las leyes civiles justas, pagar los
impuestos razonables, votar en conciencia a quienes se
estime más capacitados y honrados, rezar por los que
gobiernan porque su responsabilidad es mucha y a todos
interesa el buen gobierno... No niega el Señor la legítima
autoridad y la autonomía en los asuntos temporales, pero
avisó también que Dios tiene sus derechos, porque la
dimensión religiosa del hombre no puede ser sofocada.
De ahí que, aunque no se lo preguntaron, añadió: “y a
Dios lo que es de Dios”.
“En nuestra sociedad se ha creado un enorme vacío
moral y religioso. Todos parecen espasmódicamente
lanzados hacia conquistas materiales: gastar, invertir,
rodearse de nuevas comodidades, pasarlo bien... Dios,
que debería invadir nuestra vida, se ha convertido, en
cambio, en una estrella lejanísima, a la que sólo se mira
en determinados momentos. Creemos ser religiosos
porque vamos a la iglesia, tratando después de llevar
fuera de ella una vida semejante a la de tantos otros,
entretejida de pequeñas o grandes trampas, de injusticias,
de ataques a la caridad, con una falta absoluta de
coherencia” (Luciani, A. Ilustrísimos señores p. 219).
Una sociedad sin valores, o que no los respeta,
arrinconando los deberes para con Dios, verdadero
garante de la dignidad humana, está abocada a una
creciente agresividad, a la corrupción y a la mentira.
“La cuestión moral es claramente, hoy más que nunca,
una cuestión de supervivencia” (Ratzinger, J.
Presentación Enc. Veritatis S.). Son muchas las voces, y
de distinta procedencia ideológica, que están reclamando
la necesidad de un código ético o moral sobre cuestiones
como biología, genética, armamento, ecología, política,
medios de comunicación, economía, etc., que impida el
que, una libertad sin norte, convierta los progresos
científicos y técnicos en instrumentos de servidumbre, de
corrupción, de barbarie.
“A Dios lo que es de Dios”. El Señor es la fuente de la
vida de las personas desde su concepción hasta la
muerte, fuente que el hombre no debe cegar. De Él es la
familia, santuario de la vida, a la que santificó con su
dilatada estancia en el hogar de Nazaret. De Él es la
conciencia en donde resuena la voz de Dios para cada
uno y que no se debe deformar con informaciones
falsas... En una palabra, todo en nuestra vida le
pertenece. “Familia de los pueblos -dice el Salmo
Responsorial- aclamad al Señor... Él gobierna a los
pueblos rectamente”.
Damos a Dios lo que es de Dios, cuando le amamos
como Él quiere y merece ser amado, esto es, alabándole
y manifestándole nuestra gratitud y admiración con el
ofrecimiento del Sacrificio de la Santa Misa, “sacrificio
sin mancha desde donde sale el sol hasta el ocaso”
(Plegaria III); cuando cumplimos sus mandamientos;
cuando creemos y esperamos sinceramente en Él; cuando
no abandonamos la oración; cuando solicitamos su
perdón si le hemos ofendido; y, en fin, cuando
trabajamos y nos comportamos con rectitud,
honradamente, apoyados en su ayuda que nunca falta.
OPORTUNIDAD PARA MINISTERIO
¿Alguna vez te haz preguntado como podrias cumplir el
llamado de Jesus en Matteo de visitar a los presos sin
tener que dejar jamas la comodidad de tu casa? Bueno, es
muy facil…. Y entonces tu tambien oiras las palabras de
Jesus diciendote: “Hereradas el Reino… porque estube
preso y me visitaste.” [Matteo 25:34-36]. El Ministerio
de Amigos de Pluma en el Decanato de Chattanooga esta
creciendo y ahora necesitamos mas voluntarios para que
se escriban con nuevos presos que han pedido amigos de
pluma. En estos momentos tenemos 31 amigos de
plumas voluntarios (incluyendo 10 Hispanos) y 42 presos
participando (Incluyendo 9 Hispanos). Se proporciona
entrenamiento para poder compartir esta forma tan unica
