(Oct. 18, 2014) – An outstanding record-holding swimmer and a dedicated student are the winners of the 2014 Admiral Land Award and Trophy. The presentations were made at Saturday's Wyoming-San Jose` State Homecoming football game. This year's award winner is former swimmer Morgan Hartigan-Calhoon, and the trophy winner is Jami Baker, a student assistant in the Cowboy Joe Club. The Admiral Land Award is presented to the student-athlete who has completed his or her Wyoming competition during the preceding academic year and demonstrated outstanding achievement in intercollegiate competition, exemplary personal conduct on and off the field, and maintained academic standing with satisfactory progress toward a degree. The Admiral Land Trophy is awarded to the student (non-athlete) who has done the most to promote Intercollegiate Athletics at the University during the previous school year. Morgan Hartigan-Calhoon made history during her career at UW as the first Cowgirl swimmer ever to compete in an individual medley event at the NCAA Championships. The Mountain West champion in the 100 freestyle in 2013, Hartigan-Calhoon earned All-Mountain West honors all four years of her career. She is a part of five school records: two individual records and three relays. A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., she also holds three Corbett Pool records. She specialized in freestyle and butterfly events and majored in elementary education. A four-time letterwinner, she recently married Jayce Calhoon, also a former UW swimmer. She is the daughter of Joseph Hartigan and Kelly Wright. Jami Baker has worked for the Cowboy Joe Club for the past year. Her commitment to UW Athletics and the Cowboy Joe Club is unmatched. A tireless worker, she embraces the opportunity to spread the club’s mission of providing UW student-athletes with the opportunity to succeed in the classroom, in competition and in life. With her efforts during the CJC Golf Series and at every home football and men’s and women’s basketball game, she devotes much of her spare time to helping provide a first-class experience to club members. She handles her duties with the utmost class and professionalism and is always willing to help out when needed. A native of Moorcroft, Wyo., she is a friendly and helpful presence in the Cowboy Joe Club and truly represents the University of Wyoming in a positive manner. She is majoring in Finance and is the daughter of Paul and Kelli Baker. The Admiral Land awards have been a special part of Homecoming since 1953. They are given as a tribute to distinguished UW alumnus Admiral Emory S. Land, class of 1898. Land was a World War II Shipping Administrator and head of the U.S. Maritime Service. At UW, he was a member of the first football team and four of the first five teams in school history.
