Quick Hits:
• Senior forward Maid Memic was named to the CAA’s AllPreseason team. Memic has 27 career goals, which is tied with Alan
Bodenstein for fifth-most in program history.
• Maid Memic was one of just 30 Division I men’s soccer players to
be named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.
• Maid Memic has a five-game goal-scoring streak.

• Hofstra shut out five straight opponents before Delaware scored
against the Pride, which was the most since the program also blanked
five straight opponents in 2005. The longest team shutout streak was
seven consecutive clean sheets posted by the 1969 squad.
• Hofstra has players from eight different countries on the roster,
including the United States, England, Germany, New Zealand,
Ghana, Bosnia, Span and Norway.
• Senior Daniel Grundei, a former team captain at Towson before the
school cut the program, scored his first Hofstra goal in a win at
Rutgers. Grundei also scored the game-winner at Vermont. Grundei
was named College Sports Madness’ CAA Men’s Soccer Player of
the Week on Oct. 6.
• Daniel Grundei has scored the game-winning goal in three games,
which is the second-most to Maid Memic’s four game-winning goals
after Memic notched a penalty kick score in a road CAA win at
James Madison.
• Senior Elliott Firth registered his first career two-goal game with
second-half scoring strikes at New Hampshire. Firth, who entered
that game with two goals in his career, nearly had a hat trick when his
shot was saved in the 90th minute.
• All three of freshman Danny Elliott’s goals have come in CAA play
this season. Elliott netted his last goal in a win at James Madison in
the team’s previous game.
• Hofstra is 9-2 at home since 2013. The Pride lost its 2014 home
opener, 2-1, to Dartmouth before defeating Binghamton and William
& Mary.
• Head Coach Richard Nuttall is in his 26th season at the Pride helm
after taking over the program in 1989. He reached 200 wins in his
career in the CAA Tournament in 2010 and his overall record stands
at 234-207-56.

Hofstra Versus UNC Wilmington: Hofstra has enjoyed success in
the conference matchup, going 8-3-2 against the Seahawks in the alltime series. Hofstra blanked UNCW, 2-0, in the team’s 2013 meeting
in Hempstead. Maid Memic and Chris Griebsch scored in the game
and Patric Pray registered the shutout. It was the Pride’s first win in
the series since 2008.
UNCW is off to a 10-3-2 start overall and is 3-2-1 in CAA play,
which is tied with Elon for first place with 10 points entering Oct. 20.
The Seahawks were ranked No. 23 in the latest NSCAA national poll
released on Oct. 24. UNCW was the only CAA team ranked in the
poll, with Delaware receiving votes when the Pride played the Blue
Hens last week.
Jamie Dell is averaging more than a point-per-game, with 16 points
through the team’s first 15 games. Dell has compiled seven goals
with a team-high 40 shots with five game-winning goals.
Colin Bonner and Mateo Cardona have provided complementary
scoring with each notching four goals. All of Cardona’s scoring
strikes have come off the bench.
Both of UNCW’s goalkeepers entered the week with a goals-againstaverage of less than one. Sean Melvin (9-2-1) has a .738 save
percentage and a 0.86 GAA in earning the majority of time in net.
Backup Sam Williams (1-1-1) has a 0.93 GAA.

Holland Express: Joseph Holland assisted on all three of Hofstra’s
goals in a 3-1 win over Rutgers on Sept. 7. Holland then showed an
ability score goals in addition to facilitating them by notching scoring
strikes in back-to-back games at FDU and versus Dartmouth.
The series dates to 1962, making Drexel the most frequently played
opponent in Hofstra’s history. This season, the Dragons are off to a 13-1 start in CAA play.
Holland is tied for fourth nationally in Division I in assists with eight
entering Oct.16 and leads the CAA in assists by a margin of three
(William & Mary’s Josh West and Drexel’s John Grosh both have
five).
John Grosh leads Drexel’s offense with a goal and five assists. The
Dragons have two players with multiple goals as Michele Pataia and
Jameson Detweiler each have two goals.

Maid Service: Senior forward Maid Memic has goals in five straight
games. He has found the back of the net against Elon, Wake Forest,
William & Mary, Delaware and James Madison. He is 2-for-2 on
penalty kicks after converting chances against the Demon Deacons
and Dukes. Four of those five goals have gone for game-winners.
With his goal against JMU, Memic tied Alan Bodenstein for fifthmost in program history. Memic has 27 career goals.
Weekly Awards: Maid Memic was named the CAA’s Co-Player of
the Week on Oct. 13. He was also named to College Soccer News’
National Team of the Week. Patric Pray earned CAA Player of the
Week honors on Oct. 6 and also was named the ECAC Division I
Defensive Player of the Week one day later. Senior defender Daniel
Grundei also earned a spot on CSN’s National Team of the Week on
Oct. 6.
Transfer Of Power: Senior Daniel Grundei made a name for himself
in the Colonial Athletic Association by becoming a captain as a
sophomore for Towson. But when the Tigers discontinued the men’s
soccer program, Grundei decided to stay in the conference and
transferred to the Pride.
As one of Hofstra’s captains, Grundei has immediately been a
difference maker as a defender. As a center back, Grundei has helped
Hofstra post five straight shutouts. Grundei already has three gamewinning goals through Hofstra’s first seven victories. He scored the
game’s only goal in a 1-0 win versus Binghamton and was part of a
defensive unit that shut out the Bearcats for the home win.
Mount Up: Daniel Grundei’s goal and a combined shutout from
goalkeepers Patric Pray and Brian McPartland lifted Hofstra to a 1-0
win at Vermont on Sept. 21. The Catamounts entered the game
receiving votes in the latest NSCAA national poll and had the top
ranking in the organization’s East Regional poll. Grundei scored the
deciding goal in 1-0 wins in back-to-back games after also doing it
versus Binghamton.
Shutout Streak: Hofstra shut out five straight opponents with the
Pride notching clean sheets against Vermont, Binghamton, Elon,
Wake Forest and William & Mary. Delaware broke Hofstra’s shutout
bid, which was the school’s longest streak since the 2005 Hofstra
squad also blanked five straight teams. Hofstra’s shutout streak ended
at 520:53 after Delaware scored in the 48th minute on Oct 15. The
team record for consecutive shutouts is seven set by the 1969 squad
that went 10-5-2.
Hawk-Eye: Sophomore Harri Hawkins is in his second season on the
roster but has been able to play for the first time in 2014. Hawkins
has played in every game this season and scored his first collegiate
goal when he headed in Danny Elliott’s pass to help Hofstra tie St.
John’s, 2-2. The assist marked Elliott’s first collegiate point.
Meshack Attack: Meshack Eshun-Addy scored his first career goal
when he banked in Rory Murphy’s centering pass in the 59th minute
in Hofstra’s 3-0 win over William & Mary on Oct. 11.
Roaring Back: Hofstra saw two of its three goals against Rutgers
come from defenders. Rory Murphy added a key insurance goal, his
first collegiate scoring strike, to help the Pride defeat the Scarlet
Knight for a second consecutive season in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Murphy also assisted on Meshack Eshun Addy’s goal in a win versus
William & Mary.
First Goals: Five Hofstra players have netted their first collegiate
goals this season. Rory Murphy, Nino Alfonso, Harri Hawkins,
Danny Elliot and Meshack Eshun-Addy have all found the score
sheet, with Elliott adding a key insurance goal in Hofstra’s CAA-
opening win at Elon in which he scored after taking control of Joseph
Holland’s touch pass.
First Point: Freshman Pablo Casado assisted on Maid Memic’s
game-winning goal versus William & Mary on Oct. 11, marking
Casado’s first career point.
Double Up Production: Senior midfielder Elliott Firth scored two
goals in his first 23 games but matched that total in less than a 21minute stretch when he scored two goals at UNH on Sept. 19. Firth
scored in the 68th and 88th minutes and had a shot-on-goal in the
90th minute. Firth is one of five Hofstra players with multiple goals
this season, joining Joseph Holland, Maid Memic and Daniel Grundei
and Danny Elliott.
Pray Emerges: Junior Patric Pray spent two seasons on the
University of Washington’s roster but never appeared in a game. But
the transfer has shown what he can do with his first chance to play,
notching three shutouts in his first three starts in 2013. Pray did not
allow until his fifth collegiate game. His personal scoreless streak to
start a career reached 314:23. Pray shut out UNH, Rutgers, UNC
Wilmington and Fairleigh Dickinson. In 2014, Pray has five
individual shutouts and has totaled nine clean sheets for his career.
Awards For Pray: Patric Pray was named the CAA’s Player of the
Week on Oct. 6 after shutting out Binghamton and Elon in back-toback games. Pray was then honored as the ECAC’s Division I
Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7. Pray was the first Hofstra
player to win an ECAC weekly award since Maid Memic in 2013.
Deadlocked: Hofstra played its first scoreless tie in two seasons with
a 0-0 draw against NIU. That was the first official scoreless game
since the 2012 CAA Tournament quarterfinals versus George Mason,
which officially ended 0-0 with Hofstra advancing on penalty kicks.
All Class: Maid Memic was one of just 30 NCAA Division I men’s
soccer student-athletes to be named a candidate for the Senior
CLASS award on Sept. 2.
Memic, a fourth-year starter for the Pride, was one of just 30 men’s
soccer student-athletes to make the list while Scolarici was also one
of 30 women’s soccer student-athletes who made the cut. From the
list of 30 candidates, a national media committee will select ten
finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in October. Those 10
names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote.
Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to
determine the recipient of the award. The winners will be announced
during the 2014 NCAA College Cup championships. To be eligible
for the award, a student-athlete needed to be classified as an NCAA
Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of
excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
RPI: Hofstra’s RPI was 55 entering Oct. 13.
Book It: Hofstra assistant coach Gary Book faced a familiar team
when the Pride played the Red Storm to a 2-2 tie. Book was an
assistant at St. John’s for 13 seasons before coming to Hofstra. In
Queens, he helped St. John’s win the 1996 national championship
and helped guide the Red Storm to NCAA Tournament appearances
in every season. Hofstra played St. John’s for the first time in 20 year
with the previous meeting coming in 1994.
Opening Day: Hofstra has won three out of the last six season
openers and is 4-3-3 since 2005. The Pride played Northern Illinois to
a scoreless draw on Opening Day in 2014 with Patric Pray making
six saves. Hofstra was down to 10 players after an 89th-minute red
card but held on for the tie.
With the tie against NIU, Hofstra is 19-21-9 all-time on Opening Day
in seasons in which game-by-game records are available. Hofstra’s
best stretch came from 2002-05 when the Pride won three times in
four seasons in the opener.
Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra is 47-20-15 in its last 82 home games.
All-time at Hofstra Soccer Stadium, which opened in 2003, the Pride
has compiled a 53-28-13 record.
Hofstra was 7-1 at home in 2013 with the first two wins coming in
double overtime. Hofstra lost the home opener in 2014 with a 2-1
defeat versus Dartmouth, but defeated Binghamton, 1-0, for its first
home victory of the season.
Meet Head Coach Richard Nuttall: Richard Nuttall, a former
professional soccer player in England and a former member of the
Long Island Rough Riders, is entering his 26th season as Hofstra
University Head Soccer Coach in 2014. Nuttall has guided the Pride
to a 234-207-56 record in transforming the program into one of the
most competitive in the Northeast.
Nuttall, who is the winningest coach in program history, has led his
team to a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament appearance in
three of the last four seasons. He has led Hofstra to double-digit win
totals in four of the last 10 seasons and has posted a winning season
in four of the last five years. Under Nuttall’s tutelage, Shaun Foster
earned Third Team All-America honors from the NSCAA, making
him the third player in program history to be honored. Two of those
players – Foster and Michael Todd— have played for Nuttall.
In 2013, Chris Griebsch earned CAA Player of the Year honors while
also setting Hofstra’s career assist record. Griebsch was the second
player to win the league’s Player of the Year award under Nuttall,
joining Michael Todd, who accomplished the feat in 2006.
Academically, Hofstra also earned recognition from the NSCAA for
a College Team Academic award for 2012-13 by having the team
post a collective 3.17 grade-point-average.
Local And International Flavor: The Pride has seven Long Island
players on the roster this season (Thomas German, Nino Alfonso,
Mario Ruiz, Lerthon Theuma, Dylan Klein, Brian McPartland and
Kyle Poetzsch) but also has an eclectic mix of foreign flavor with
eight countries represented. Besides the United States, Hofstra is
represented by natives from England, Germany, New Zealand (Henry
Crayton), Ghana (Meshack Eshun Addy), Bosnia (Maid Memic),
Spain (Pablo Casado), and Norway (Marius Flateboe).
Conference Start: Hofstra defeated Elon in the 2014 CAA opener,
marking the second straight year the program won the conference
game of the year. The Pride is now 4-6-3 in conference openers since
joining the CAA in 2002.

Hofstra vs. Ranked Teams: The Pride is 13-10-4 in its last 27
games against ranked opponents dating to 2004. Five losses during
this span were to top seven teams (#7 Maryland, #3 Old Dominion,
#3 Wake Forest, #4 Connecticut, #2 SMU), including two (Maryland
in 2004, Wake Forest in 2006) in the NCAA Tournament. Hofstra is
10-7-3 against ranked teams since 2004. Three of those wins cane
against James Madison. The first was a 1-0 victory in 2005 when
JMU was #22. The Pride then recorded a 1-0 win in 2006 when the
Dukes were #23. In the 2011 season finale, Hofstra blanked #12
JMU, 3-0, to end the campaign with momentum.
In 2013, Hofstra bested #25 Brown, 2-1, in double overtime with
freshmen accounting for every Hofstra point. Hofstra has defeated a
ranked team in three consecutive seasons dating to 2011.

Preseason Poll: The Hofstra Men’s Soccer program was picked
seventh in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll.
Hofstra earned 29 points in the nine-team poll. Delaware, which
returns eight starters from last season’s 14-5-1 squad, was picked first
with four first-place votes and 58 points overall. Drexel came in
second with 49 points and also received four first-place votes.
William & Mary gained one more point than first-year member Elon
for third place with 44 points. UNCW came in fifth with 39 and
Northeastern was sixth at 33 points. The Huskies were the only other
school to garner a first-place vote with one. The College of
Charleston and James Madison followed Hofstra to round out the
poll.
The Pride posted its second consecutive winning season in 2013 with
an 8-7-3 record. Head Coach Richard Nuttall’s team qualified for the
CAA Tournament for the second consecutive season with the Pride
advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to William & Mary.
