This entertaining and informative lecture covers the topic of mediation as seen through the lens of the attorney who participated in the mediation of a dispute between two children’s apparel companies. This class is also offered on Saturday. MODEL CLASS: Are We Alone? The Search for Earth-like Planets and Extraterrestrial Life 103 Breslin Hall, South Campus Stephen S. Lawrence, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Is Earth unique? Are we the only planet that supports life? Only in the last 20 years have astronomers been able to make any meaningful progress on answering these profound questions. To date astronomers have detected nearly 600 “exoplanets” orbiting other stars, many in multiple planet solar systems similar to our own. In this model class, Professor Lawrence will review the telescopes and astronomical techniques used to find these planets, and the future research that will allow us to determine if any of these planets are habitable and possibly even inhabited. 4 GALLERY TOUR: Burton Silverman: The Humanist Spirit Emily Lowe Gallery, Behind Emily Lowe Hall, South Campus Karen T. Albert, Assistant Director of Exhibitions and Collections, Hofstra University Museum The exhibition Burton Silverman: The Humanist Spirit demonstrates the continuing power of the realist tradition in the 21st century. Through Burton Silverman’s use of contemporary realist portraiture, the exhibition examines the commonalities of existence of “everyman.” Burton Silverman is known for his ability to carefully balance formal visual elements in his realistic representations as he captures the very essence of his subjects. Ordinary working people, his primary subjects, are elevated to a stature of dignity and importance, which we rarely see, with the individuality of his sitters as well as the universality of their life experiences evident in each canvas. G. Zarb School of Business. His professional interests include cross-cultural consumer behavior with a special focus on issues related to age perception and levels of religiosity in the United States, Asia (China, India, and South Korea), and Europe (France). He has presented his research at conferences sponsored by the Association of Consumer Research, the American Marketing Association, the Academy of Marketing Science, and the American Association for Advances in Health Care Research. In 2011, Dr. Barak was honored by Hofstra students with the Teacher of the Year Award. Bernard J. Firestone, Ph.D., is dean of the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS), a position he has held since July 1997. Dr. Firestone received a Ph.D. in political science from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and joined Hofstra’s Department of Political Science in 1976. He has held the position of professor of political science since 1994. A specialist in American foreign policy and the American presidency, Dr. Firestone has published two books, The Quest for Nuclear Stability and The United Nations Under U Thant, and edited two other volumes, Lyndon Baines Johnson and the Uses of Power and Gerald R. Ford and the Politics of Post-Watergate America. Maria Luisa Fixell earned a B.A. in comparative language education and an M.S. in educational administration from Long Island University – C.W. Post Campus, and an M.A. in Italian literature from New York University. She is currently assistant dean of study abroad programs in the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, director of the Hofstra in Venice Program, and adjunct assistant professor of Italian in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Hofstra. Warren G. Frisina, Ph.D., dean of Hofstra University Honors College (HUHC) and associate professor of religion, came to Hofstra in 1997 from a position as acting executive director of the American Academy of Religion, the world’s largest learned society for scholars of religion. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and has published widely in the areas of American pragmatism, Neo-Confucianism and the academic study of religion. Ahmet Karagozoglu, Ph.D., is associate professor of finance and the academic director of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business’ Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room. He also serves as the faculty adviser of Hofstra Quants & Traders (HQT). He is the director of GARP at Hofstra chapter of the Global Association of Risk Professionals). Dr. Karagozoglu’s teaching focuses on options, futures, financial modeling and risk management. His primary research interests are in the areas of futures markets, option pricing, market microstructure, interest rate derivatives, credit risk and risk management. John J. Krapp earned both a B.A. and M.A. at Hofstra University, and earned a Ph.D. in comparative literature at Stony Brook University. Since 1992, he has served on the faculty of the School for University Studies, where he is also the senior academic adviser to the vice dean. His courses and publications reflect his interest in the way western intellectual history is reflected through literature. 9 Stephen S. Lawrence, Ph.D., is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Professor Lawrence earned a B.A. in physics from The University of Chicago, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Michigan. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a recipient of the University of Michigan’s Ralph Baldwin Thesis Prize in Astrophysics and Space Science for his Ph.D. dissertation. Prior to joining the Hofstra faculty in 2001, Professor Lawrence was a lecturer at the University of Michigan and a visiting assistant professor at Bowling Green State University. He also held research positions as resident astronomer at the National Astronomical Observatory in Mexico and, most recently, postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University. Professor Lawrence’s research interests include supernovae and supernova remnants, light echo phenomena and interstellar dust, astrobiology, and the search for planets around other stars. He has authored a number of journal articles as well as circulars and conference proceedings related to his research. He has used a variety of large telescopes in Arizona, Mexico and Chile to conduct his research, as well as the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope. Bhaswati Sengupta, Ph.D., is assistant professor of economics in Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Dr. Sengupta received a doctoral degree in economics from North Carolina State University in 2003. Before joining the faculty at Hofstra, she held the position of visiting assistant professor at Grinnell College in Iowa. Currently, she is the economist for a project of the International Labour Office of the United Nations, studying the impact of repatriation of Afghan refugees from Iran. Dr. Sengupta’s primary research interest is in the analysis of the decision-making process of migrant workers, and her academic research and fieldwork deal more specifically with undocumented Mexican migration to the United States. She also works in the field of real options and is interested in its unique applications in modeling migration decisions. She has teaching experience in the fields of econometrics, statistics, economic development, labor economics, and introductory and intermediate micro- and macroeconomics. In 2011, Professor Sengupta was honored by Hofstra students with the Teacher of the Year Award. Glen M. Vogel is assistant professor of accounting, taxation and legal studies in business in the Hofstra Frank G. Zarb School of Business. Before joining academia, Professor Vogel was a commercial litigator for a national law firm and was also the firm’s director of litigation. Currently, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses for the Zarb School of Business, and occasionally serves as an instructor at the Hofstra University Maurice A. Deane School of Law.
