Then they handed him the Roman coin. He

EVERYTHING BELONGS TO GOD
The first reading from the
prophet Isaiah concerns the Persian
King Cyrus, called the Lord’s
“anointed.” Cyrus deserves this title
because he ended the Babylonian
captivity of the Jews. However,
Isaiah reminds us that it was God
who gave Cyrus his power. He may
be a great king, but “I am the LORD
and there is no other,” says God
(Isaiah 45:5).
Today’s Gospel is also concerned with worldly power.
In the passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try to trick Jesus into speaking against the emperor. His famous answer
is the perfect reply. Like the kings of old, Caesar can be
given the respect due his position, but everything belongs
to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who are
faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too, reminds us
that our call and the power to be faithful come from God.

WORDS AND ACTIONS
When people hear us speak God’s word, they marvel at its beauty and power; when they see what little impact it has on our daily lives, they laugh and poke fun at
what we say.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council met to
discuss the sacrament of penance, they were required to
draw up a new rite, including several forms. The hot button
for debate was so-called “general absolution,” by which a
penitent could be absolved of sin without confessing to a
priest. This was a difficult debate, compounded by widely
varying traditions in both East and West. Some were surprised to learn that the Holy See had already given permission, during the First and Second World Wars, for this
form. In 1944 the Vatican issued a decree saying this form
was valid under extreme conditions, which bishops in mission lands and Latin America took as a kind of “blanket
permission.”
Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to find
this practice fairly widespread, not only in war, but in
peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful and few
priests. Although they eventually produced a ritual with
three different forms, the forms are not considered equal,
and the enriched and revised individual form is preferred.
The enrichments include a welcome of the penitent, a sign
of the cross with an encouragement to trust in God’s compassion, new texts rich in the Word of God, praise for
God’s mercy, and a dismissal.

Sisters of St. Francis -150th Anniversary
The Franciscan Sisters from Dubuque, Iowa ministered at
St. Mary’s school in Keota from 1925 until 1973. During
those years a total of 72 sisters served as classroom teachers, homemakers, and music teachers. In this year of 2014
the congregation is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its
founding in Germany. In 1864, Mother Xavier Termehr and
a small group of women desiring to be sisters cared for orphans and the elderly in Herford, Germany. Forced to
leave the country in 1875 because of the political situation,
the sisters first came to Iowa City where they cared for
German orphans. The first school that the sisters staffed
was in 1876 - St. Elizabeth’s located in Keokuk County in
what was then the town of Baden, Iowa. In 1878, the congregation moved to Dubuque at the invitation of the
archbishop to open St. Mary’s orphanage and built its first
motherhouse on Davis Avenue next to the orphanage.
Today, there are five sisters who were missioned at Keota
who are still living. Their names and the years at Keota are:
Sisters Jude Dietsch (1957-58), Verna Gaul (Clarence; 195760), Joan Hosch (Nathanael; 1953-57), Amelia Thole (Ida;
1958-62); and Lois Wagner (Placid; 1946-48). All of them
reside at Mount St. Francis Center; 3390 Windsor Avenue;
Dubuque, IA 52001.

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God
what belongs to God." Jesus had a brilliant way of navigating tricky situations. In today's Gospel, the Pharisees
"plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech." But he
outwitted them, as usual. They wanted to catch him being
a political rebel; they expected him to suggest that paying
taxes to Caesar was unnecessary or even unjust. But instead, he shifted the focus. He emphasized the importance
of fulfilling our civic responsibilities but also the necessity
of giving to God what we owe him.
So, how do we know what we should "repay" to God? Well,
Jesus' response to the Pharisees gives us our answer. He
looked at the Roman coin that bore the image of Caesar on
it. Then he concluded that the coin belonged to Caesar because it was made in his likeness. Now, what bears the image of God? What is made in his likeness? We are! "God
created man in his image; in the divine image he created
him; male and female he created them" (Gn 1:27). If the coin
belonged to Caesar, we belong to God. We repay God by
giving him ourselves!
This self-giving is what the Second Vatican Council called
"the obedience of faith." Through this spiritual obedience,
we freely commit ourselves to God, "offering the full submission of intellect and will to God" (Dei Verbum #5). Jesus is calling us today to use our will to choose to follow
God. Indeed, the one thing we can give God in return for
the gift of life is our will. He gave us the freedom to love
him or not. And while the choice is always ours, today Jesus
encourages us to make the right decision by giving God
what is really his: ourselves!
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-13.
There will be door prizes, quilt raffle, candy booth.
Please join us for a fun-filled dinner with faith, family
and friends!
There will be anointing of the sick at all the Nursing Home Masses this week.
