the parish of Highworth, it having been an eccle..
siastical parish since 18·89 : it is 3 miles west from
Shrivenbam. station on the Didcot and Swindon section
of the Great Western railway and 2 east·by..north from
Stratton station on the Swindon and Highworth branch
of the same line and 3t north.east from Swindon, in the
South Marston division of the county, hundred and
!Ural district of Highworth, Swindon county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of
Cricklade, archdeaconry of Swindon and diocese of
Bristol. Gas is available. The church of St. Mary Mag..
dalene i~ an ancient structure, partly in the ~arly English
style, with traces of Norman work, and consists of chancel;
nave, south transept, south porch and an embattled
western tower with pinnaclest. containing a clock -and
6 bells, the original four having been recast and a.dded
to in 1926 to form a peal of six: the church was

Gove1 nment Aot, i894 (56 & 57 Vlot. c, 73), ib 1s now
governed by an Urban District Council. Gaa nnd electricity are available. W uter is su.pplied by the Trowb1·idge, Melltsham and District Water Boa1'd; the houses
are built of soft f1•eestone, but aTe irregularly placed.
The river .A.von divides the town and is crossed by a
handsome bridge of four arches, with light and elegant
balustrades.
Under the provisions of the Local Government Act,
x894, the ancient parish of Melksham was, by Local

September, 1894, divided into· two parishes, which are
lcnown as Melltsham Within and Mellcsha.m Without,
the former being the area of the Urban District, and
the latter included in Bradford a.nd Mellcsham Rural
District.
There are two :piineral sp1•ings in the vicinity, one
saline and the other chalybeate; in 1816 a new saline
spa was obtained by boring to a depth of 351! feet;
it was anticipated that I\ielltsham would advance into
note in consequence of the medicinal qualities these
waters po~aesse~, and. every accommodation for .v isitors
was provided, including a pump-room, hot and cold
boths, a handsome crescent and, an ag1·ecable
promenade ; but after a very great outlay, the wells
did not. prove attractive and are not now uied.
The church of St. Michael is a. spacious edifice of
freestone, which dates from the Norman period, but is
now chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and consists of
Norman chancel, nave of five bays, a.isles, north porch,
and an embattled towe~ with pinnacles, containing . 8
bells: it was restored and enlarged in I840, when the
central tower was removed and thei p1·esent tower built
at · the ivest end; and again restored in x88x: in 1891
the· church was reseated and new floored, the oalten roof
opened, and a carved oalt sc1·een and brass lectern were
the11 given by C. F. Rumboll esq. M.D. who nlso placed
a rooq, with attendant figures, upon the chancel screen
in 1922: jn I894 the, reredos was restQred at co;nsjder·
able cost by the trustees of Si1· John .A:wdry, and in
1897 a stained window was placed by Mrs. Stewart, of
Lowbourne,, in memory· of he'f fathe1', General Moule:
the west window was the gift, in i ·899, of :Mr. George
White, who also gave the six clerestory windows in
1910: in 1900 a figure of St. Michael was erected in a
niche over the north door to commemorate the new
centuty: in 1903 a memorial window was placed in
the ai~le to those parishioners who fell durin~ t11e cnmpa.ign in South Africa, I899-x902: the organ wns rebuilt
in x903, ana an oalt screen fitted at the west end: in
1907 a handsome ala.baster font was provided: in 1921
a painting representing the Transfigurat,ion was ere-cted
over the chancel arch by Mrs. s,vanbo.rough, in memory
of he1· husband: there are 600 sittings. The register
dates from the yef\r I~6o. The livjng is a vicara~c, net
yearly value £ z40, with 2 · acres of glebe and residence,
m the gift of the Dean and OhaEter of Salisbury, and
held since 1933 by the Rev~ Oanon Frank Harold Sangster
M.A. of Jesus College, Camb1•idge, & rural dean of
Bradford..on-Avon. St. Andrew's church, about x milo
from the town, erected at the sole expense of the
Rev.. E. L. Barnwell, of Melksha.m House, for the
use of the district of Sandridge and Melltsham Forest,
is a building in the Eo.Tly English style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch, and a we.st~rn
tu1•ret containing one bell: the reredos was erected
in memor;y of Ralph L. Lopes esq, D.L., J.P.:
the east window is stained and there are windows to
the memory of Mrs. and Miss Lopes, Sir Massey Lopes,
Mrs. Parlce'"r , Mr. Gl'ist and Mrs. Tottenham: an oak
tablet was erected in 192t, on which are recorded the
names of those connected with the parish who fell
in the Grea.t War, x~:r4.. x8: there are 200 sittin~s.
The Roman Oathol1c Church of St. Anthony, ln the
West End, erected in 1939, is a small building of briclt:
there are 250 sittings.
The Society of Friends' meeting house, King street,
erected in 1734, has 300 1ea1;s.

'fhe Baptist chapel, Old Broughton road, founded in
1669, bas 380 sittings. Ebeneze1· Strict Baptist ch·apel,
Union street, erected in r835, '''ill seat 150 pe1·sons.
The Congregational cl1ape1, Ma1·lcet place, founded in
1788, has 400 sittings.
The Methodist cliapel, Forest, will seat 150 persons.
The Me~h~dist chapel, M~:rlcet pl!lce, erected in .187?,
has 450 s1ttmgs, and that m Semmgton lane, built 1n
r896, will seat xoo.
There is a non-sectarian chapel at Sandridge. ,
A cross was erected in Oanons square, in 1921, 1n
memory of the men of the parish who fell in the Great
War, ;x9.14-x8; their names a1 e inscribed on the base of
the memorial.
The Town Hall, no'v the p1'operty -of the U1·ban Dis..
tri~t Oouncil, was erected in 1847 by a company at nn
expense of £g,350; it is a spacious and well-a1·1·anged
edifice of white freestone, in the Italian style. The
New Hall, in the Marlc.et place. -erected by Miss Fowler,
is a structure of Bath stone,. and is used for l~ctul'es
and meetings; it will bold 200 persons. The market
is held on every alte1·nate Tuesday for calves.
The principal industries al'e rubber worlts, iron
found1'Y, feather works, dairy factories; the manufacture. of mattings, mats> rope, t'vine ~nd saclcing is also
carrJ.ed on.
The Freemasons' Hall, in Ohurch street, was erec.t ed in
1897
the brethren of the Lodge. in· commemoration of
the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Melltsham Hospital~ in Spa l'Oad, and formerly in Danlc
street, established in 1868, 1vas rebuilt in x938 at a
cost of £ 50,000; it contains 4-Z beds,
Bruge~' charity of abov.t £5 yearly is distributed in
blankets by the vicar and churchwaTdens at Christmas.
There are also two sma.11 charities, left by the Rev.
Bohun Fox and Mr. Pritchard Tespectively, for the
benefit of the poor nnd distributed at the discretion of
the v~c-ar. J. and J. Usher's BlanJret Fund, which prodnces about [,90 a. year, is used for the benefit of
dese1·ving and necessitous persons resident in the
parishes of Melltsham Within and Me11tsham Without.
Mellrsham House- is now the club- houae of the Avon
Sports Club, opened for their employees by the Avon
lridia Rubber Oo. ·Ltd.: the grounds are 27 acres in
extent, 20 acres of which are used for criolr.et a11d
tootball.
