Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary time
The Daughters of Divine Charity
This Congregation of Sisters has served here in St. Augustine Parish and School for 65 years
The Congregation was founded by Mother Franciska Lechner in Austria on November 21, 1868.
Sisters from the Croatian Province came to St. Mary Visitation Parish in Rankin, Pennsylvania on September 4, 1926;
they were formed into a Province in 1950. A year prior to that three members of the community
came to St. Augustine Paraish here in West Allis on September 9th, 1949;
Sr. Valeria Pollack, St. Stanislaus Zuvic and Postulant Francis Luin (later Sr. Antoinette Luin)
The Sisters then staffed the school for fifty years from 1954 until 2004.
They likewise ministered in the parish through many other ways.
During those 65 years the same Congregation of Sisters
also ministered at Sacred Heart Parish on 49th Street and staffed its school.
The Sisters had their Provincial House in Akron, Ohio
However, their Province and the two other Provinces of the Daughters of Divine Charity
in the Unites States merged in 2012 with the Provincial House now on Staten Island, New York.
Now at the time of the departure of the Sisters from St. Augustine, three Sisters are living in the convent,
Sr. Christine Cochenet, Sr. Mary Coffelt and Sr. Imelda Marinovich.
We are most grateful to these three as well as to all the Sisters who ministered in our parish/school.
A hearty and sincere thank you!
May these three Sisters, together with other members of their Congregation,
continue to bear witness to God’s love as is embodied in the very name of their Congregation,
The Daughters of Divine Charity.
Halloween: This holiday has a pre-Christian past even though its present name is Christian. “Hallow e’en” is an ancient form of All Hallows Eve, the day before all Saints Day! As darkness and cold fell upon the earth, and as plants
lost their greenery, the pre-Christian tribes naturally thought of death. Some thought that “the land of the dead” came
on earth at this time; hence the ghosts and skeletons! Some of this remains in our secular Halloween so popular in our
society. This time of the year was a good occasion for Christians to remember the deceased in a way more attuned to
the mystery of Christ’s saving death and glorious resurrection; two separate church observances flowed from this.
Feast of All Saints: On November 1st we remember that we, as the holy ones of God on earth, are in communion with the saints of heaven in praising the Lord. The glorious company of apostles, the noble fellowship of prophets, the white-robed martyrs and the saints of all times and places sing out to the Holy and
Mighty God; our voices from the earth join with them in praising the Lord. We also look to the saints in
heaven as models and examples for daily living. This Feast is a Holy Day of obligation, but since it is on a
Saturday this year (so close to Sunday) the bishops have dispensed the faithful from the obligation of participating in
Mass. However, for those who choose to come, Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 1st, at 9:00 a.m.
Remembrance of the Faithful Departed: November tells us that another season of growth has come to an end. Yet
we know that the resting earth will be awakened by God’s warmth and light in spring. During November we fittingly
remember that each person’s life also comes to an end on earth, but all await a glorious awakening as pledged to us
through Jesus who died but was raised from death. Sun. Nov. 2nd, the Day of the Faithful Departed,
sometimes known as All Souls Day, is a day to especially remember our dear deceased with a strong hope.
Anticipated Mass on Sat., Nov. 1st at 5:00 p.m. and then on Sun., morning Mass will be celebrated at
10:00 a.m. On Sunday deceased parishioners of this past year will be remembered by a family member or
friend who will light a candle as the name of the deceased is announced. Social follows in Heritage Hall.
Three Envelopes for Next Weekend
Sat., Nov. 1st, All Saints Day, is a holy day with a regular holy day envelope.
Sun., Nov. 2nd, the Day of the Faithful Departed, also known as All Souls Day,
has an envelope for the names of your dear deceased; these names will remain by the altar
during the entire month of November. These two envelopes are included in the October packet.
The names of those who died this past year will be displayed in the back of the church
during the entire month of November, known as the Month of the Faithful Departed.
The Sun., Nov. 2nd, regular envelope is in the November packet.
