YEAR 3 – 7 BATON RELAY & HAY-BALE RELAY FORMAT
1.
All girls lined up at the EASTERN END (gymnasium end) of the track…GIRLS WILL START
ALL RELAYS.
2.
All boys will line up at the WESTERN END (staff car park) of the track…BOYS WILL
FINISH ALL RELAYS.
3.
The relay concludes when the last runner has SAT DOWN at the FRONT of the team and
ALL MEMBERS are sitting down in a straight line.

Lanes are numbered right to left when looking towards the staff car park.

Rubber chickens will be used as batons in Hay–Bale Relay only.

The format for the year level relays is straight front-on baton change.
Children use ‘butterfly grip’ to receive baton.



Runner 1 runs up to his/her team and gives the baton to Runner 2 at the front of the line who
continues the process
After passing the baton the runner sits down at the back of his/her team. At this stage the
runners waiting for their turn move forward one space until they are in line with the marker.
Baton Relay continues until the last runner (No. 10) has received the baton, runs up to their
team and sits down at the front of their line facing forward.
JUNIOR PRIMARY TABLOID EVENTS
6 events x 20 minutes per event
Equipment will be supplied for all events except for any teacher designed game or activity.
Event 1. SPRINTS / 45 m / 4 lanes / Scored event
Scoring: 1st–4 points, 2nd-3 points, 3rd-2 points 4th-1 point
One person from each coloured team races at a time. Add all results together for final
score. Once all students have had one scored race, they may continue to race for fun.
Event 2. HAY BALE HURDLES / 45 m / 4 lanes / Scored Event
Scoring: 1st – 4 points, 2nd – 3 points, 3rd – 2 points, 4th – 1 point.

TEAM RELAYS / Choose 2 relays / Scored Event
Dress Up Relay/ Water Bucket Relay / Tunnel Ball Relay
Scoring: 1st – 40 points, 2nd - 30 points, 3rd – 20 points, 4th – 10 points.
Relays to be decided by Year level teachers, e.g. Dress Up Relay, Water Relay, Tunnel
ball Relay, Spoke set up for tunnel ball. Ensure each child competes in both activities.
Event 4. TEAM GAMES / Scored event
Rob the Nest
Scoring: 1st – 40 points, 2nd – 30 points, 3rd – 20 points, 4th – 10 points
Event 5. NOVELTY RACES / Non-Scored event
Egg & Spoon, Sack Race
Event 6. ACCURACY THROW / Non-Scored event
Bean bags & 3 hoops used as targets. Distance from first hoop can be lengthened to
increase difficulty of throws.
