Parish Website - www.stpaulshh.org.uk 30th Sunday of the Year (A) Our first reading today comes from the Book of the Covenant, which is part of the book of Exodus, and it provides us with evidence of a very high standard of morality for its time. The book demonstrates a remarkable degree of concern for the weak and unprotected members of the Israelite people. And more - the Lord tells his people that they are to help the alien in their land. Their care must reach out to the widow and orphan, and any needy person that they may encounter. Jesus brings this tradition into sharp focus when asked which is the greatest commandment of them all. He replies: “Love God, Love Neighbour, Love Self.” RESPONSORIAL PSALM REFRAIN: I love you, Lord, my strength. St. Paul’s Pre-School 07982 853181 THE PARISH OF ST. PAUL St. Paul’s Toddler Group 07506 986 749 Please send your items for the Bulletin to the Parish Office by Wednesday a.m. (email accepted). It is the highpoint of all Christian teaching and all three parts of the commandment are related. It is impossible to love God or neighbour if we do not love ourselves. We have to know ourselves as forgiven and loved by God and believe deep down inside that we are lovable. If we don’t we will only see our own faults writ large in others and be unable to forgive them and love them. As a result we have a problem loving God. Love of God is given visible expression in our love of others AND our love for ourselves. Love of self starts with allowing God’s forgiveness to touch the whole of our lives.
