The Australian Institute of Sport (Australia’s high performance sport agency) is seeking two talented and driven
individuals in the area of data analytics. The AIS, through Australia’s Winning Edge, is on a journey to move
Australian sport from world class to world best. It sets high targets, including top 5 nation at the Olympic/Paralympic
Games, top 15 nation at the Winter Olympic/Paralympic Games, #1 nation at the Commonwealth Games and 20+
world champions annually. Leading data analytics expertise is required to help shape and drive this strategy.
Experience in sport is not necessary - analytical talent and relentless motivational drive is. Working at the AIS
means working alongside world leading sports practitioners in an elite sporting environment. Your analytical work
will help determine the level and type of support that is provided to sports and athletes, and help athletes to
improve performance. You will have a direct impact on Australia’s ability to achieve international sporting success.
Your duties and responsibilities will include:





Develop and manage effective systems for collecting and analysing high performance intelligence,
including athlete tracking and profiling, and predicting future performance;
Lead the development and integration of existing and new analytical end-to-end approaches in
collaboration with sport science and clinical personnel;
Lead and implement a project management framework for AIS data science and data analysis
Monitor trends and analyse the impact of key drivers of high performance; and
Conduct and manage key opposition analysis through comprehensive coverage of competing nations.
Desired skills and experience:








Extensive experience in data analytics, predictive modelling, statistics or similar field;
Tertiary qualification (degree or higher) in a relevant discipline (eg. statistics, mathematics);
Advanced level of comfort within IT environments and in using statistical software tools (eg. SAS, R);
Strong experience in the use of statistics to identify trends and predicting future behaviour;
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) including an ability to educate and train
others;
Ability to present complex data and information with impact (verbally, visually and in written form);
Relentless attention to detail; and
An outstanding work ethic, ability to excel within a collaborative environment and a passion to perform
The roles are based at the AIS campus in Canberra. Employment benefits include use of on-site gymnasium,
swimming pool,) and free parking. Relocation support may be available for the right candidate. Some domestic
and international travel may be required. Both roles are available on a fixed term basis until 30 June 2017.

Context

a clear agenda for achieving international success in line with Australia’s
Winning Edge performance targets.
Innovation, Research and Development plays a key role in achieving
Australia’s Winning Edge strategies. The AIS provides engineering and
technical services within the AIS and to key High Performance National
Sporting Organisations. Additionally, collaboration with key partners in the
sport and research sectors is fundamental to deliver knowledge growth,
impactful innovation projects and engineering and technical services to High
Performance Sport. Data Science plays a key role in analysing and predicting
performance of athletes and sports to achieve Australia’s Winning Edge
strategies.

Responsibilities
Lead the development of models, frameworks and systems in AIS Innovation,
Research and Development which are used to monitor, analyse and predict
the performance of athletes and sports. Lead and drive the delivery of
projects (including end-to-end analytical solutions) from AIS Performance
Research to provide valuable feedback to the ASC as well as directly to
external stakeholders.
1. As part of the senior leadership team, provide high level strategic
leadership, advice and direction to the Section to achieve team and
business outcomes. This includes:
 Lead the development and manage the integration of existing and new
analytical end-to-end approaches in collaboration with sport science
and clinical personnel.
 Lead and direct AIS Data Analytics, providing guidance and
performance coaching as appropriate to ensure organisation objectives
are achieved.

Lead, develop and manage effective systems for collecting and
analysing high performance intelligence, including athlete tracking and
profiling.
 Lead and oversee the project management framework for AIS data
science and data analysis to ensure that projects are delivered on-time
with all objectives achieved.
 Foster and maintain collaborative partnerships between the AIS and
key national and international sport system stakeholders to benefit the
national high performance system.
 Participate in, and contribute to, national and international forums and
bodies where this contributes to the outcomes of the ASC/AIS and
enhances its standing in the field of data science in sport.
 Manage relationships with end users of data analysis to ensure
integration into training and/or competition environments.
 Effectively communicate and manage project expectations,
requirements and delivery arrangements to key internal and external
stakeholders and ensure that systems are created to deliver timely
and accurate reporting mechanisms for all key stakeholders.
2. Actively promote and role model the ASC values of Excellence, Integrity,
Respect and Teamwork, and contribute to positive organisational
change, effective communication, and continuous improvement at the
ASC.
