“I have been an arts and crafts person most of my life,
but after deciding to take a class in watercolor followed
by one in pen and ink, I was hooked on this part of the
creative arts. Soon pencil drawing became the most fun
and in a few years I began doing commissioned pieces
of children and pets.
I found out about a class in palette knife painting in
oil, and because I had always been interested in this
style, I signed up. I have never looked back. I love the
bright colors and “feel” of working in oils.
I know that God has sent me on this journey, weaving
my life with creative ideas, colors that dance and a gift to
dream, allowing me to be myself and asking me to only
use His world for my palette.”

Elvie Becker
“I am a self taught artist who has been painting
mostly portraits in oil since 2008. I love to paint, but I
also work for Mesa Public Schools as an Instructional
Assistant with Special Needs Children in Elementary
Schools. I am married, have four sons and ten
grandchildren.
In this painting I painted my niece hugging her
beloved dog Duncan, who passed away due to a sudden
illness. I wanted the girl to be in the background and the
dog to be the focal point. I also love doing studies of
paintings done be the Renaissance Masters like
Michelangelo, Raffaello and Caravaggio.”
KEEP IT COMING

women. Also bring teddy bears for the kids at the Crisis

I (HEART) Mesa: Theme for the Ripple Project
Good news! We won the Ripple project grant! The
focus is to highlight the City of Mesa as seen through the
eyes of its creative souls. In other words, your entry
should be about some aspect of life in Mesa.
A notice has been already been issued to the Mesa
schools, including the colleges and universities, to get
students involved in exhibiting.
Now we are calling for adults (over 18 years old) of
two-dimensional art, photographers, writers of short
stories and poems, as well as musicians to enter their
creations. Ribbons and monetary prizes will be awarded
to the top three in each of the following categories: 1)
under 12; 2) 12-through 18; 3) adults who live or work in
Mesa; and 4) adults who are members of a AAAaffiliated art league.
Finished artwork is not to exceed 20 by 24 inches.
Each may be designated for sale with a quoted price or
not for sale (NFS). The drop-off date is November 29,
between 10 AM and 3 PM at either of the two tents at
Linton-Milano Music (the piano store) or Margaritas Grill
on Main Street, between Center and MacDonald
Avenues.
Our League members will set up to exhibit and sell
their art along Main Street between these two venues.
On Friday, December 19, the public will vote for their
favorite entry from the winning entries of all categories
and the winner will be announced that evening.
The Ripple grant will cover costs for insurance,
publicity, live entertainment, and food samples and
demos.
The entry form and a fuller explanation is on the MAL
website at mesaartleague.com.
