ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT OF SAPSAC

It is indeed a pleasure to announce SAPSAC`s 15th Annual National Child Abuse Conference and to invite
all professionals interested in the improved handling of child abuse to register for the conference.
The SAPSAC conferences are aimed to educate at the multi-disciplinary level. They provide a rare learning
opportunity for professionals at all levels and in all disciplines, where we may also learn from partners and
colleagues in other disciplines. The topics are carefully chosen to speak to all involved in handling child
abuse and, with no less than three specialist post-conference parallel training sessions, it should certainly
speak to all kinds of training needs.
The focus of this year’s conference is amongst other on children with special needs. A multi-disciplinary
case presentation of a speech impaired victim of child abuse will set the scene for the rest of the
conference. Attention will also be given to emotional abuse of the child with special needs; competency
tests for special needs children; the competency of the mentally disabled child as a witness; empowering
children with disabilities to safeguard themselves; accessing social grants for children with disabilities; the
challenges of forensic nursing with special needs children and the role of medicine in the psychiatric
treatment of special needs children.
The lunches and teas provide the important opportunity for professional networking in answer to another
of SAPSAC`s aims as reflected in the SAPSAC logo: taking hands in the best interest of the children of South
Africa.
