Message from The Archdeacon. ‘Like me, I know you will be sorry to have heard that your Rector, Val, and her husband Stuart are in the process of seeking a divorce. They both need the assurance of our love and prayers at this difficult time. Bishop Martyn and I continue to have full confidence in, and to be fully supportive of, Val’s ministry in this benefice: one that continues to be exercised with great skill and ability. We ask you to give her the space and privacy she needs to resolve what are personal matters over the next few months, while continuing to surround her with your prayers and support as she continues her ministry as your Rector.’ Robert Val is once more living at ‘The Rectory’, Duntisbourne Leer, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, GL7 7AS and can be contacted as normal on 01285 821040 or [email protected]. Don't forget that much of the information in parish connections, such as church services, what's happening and local information, can be found on our website www.parishconnections.org.uk "CAN YOU PLAY THE ORGAN?” Would you like to be on our list of occasional organists that work across the Benefice? If so please contact Rev Val Bexon 01285 821040 or [email protected] 3 Lest We Forget When the fighting of the First World War finally ceased, many people wanted to find a way of honouring the thousands who had died – as well as providing for those soldiers who had been left injured from the conflict. Three years after the guns went silent, in 1921, the British Legion was formed. The organisation adopted the poppy as its symbol of hope and remembrance, wearing one on their lapels as they turned their thoughts to those who had fought in the conflict. The problems facing First World War veterans when they returned to the UK continue to affect serving personnel and veterans today: whether living with bereavement or disability, finding employment, or coping with financial stress. The Royal British Legion, which was awarded the Royal title in 1971, continues to work to improve their lives. Today, more than 45 million poppies are distributed each year with 95 percent of people taking part in Remembrance events. This year it has set a national fundraising target of £42 million towards helping men and women of the military. For more information on any article, please visit (www.glosdioc.org.uk), The Archdeacon of Cheltenham, the Venerable Robert Springett, reflects on the First World War In August our Cathedral gave a whole day to readings the names, from war memorials across the county, of all those killed in the Great War. It was deeply moving, a reminder of how that war affected almost every family and community. Its deepest power was though simply in the reading of names. Names are so precious, the way in which we are known to each other as father, son, daughter, husband, partner, lover and of course they are the way in which we are known to God, whom the psalmist says formed each one of us in our mother’s womb, who call us, who holds us as beloved. As the names of those killed in the Great War recede into the carved stone of our memorials it would be easy to forget. In this centenary year let us remember them, the humanity, the vulnerability, the uniqueness of each person, and those who loved and mourned them. In our world today where still innocent victims of every race and creed lose their lives in war and conflict, it is in this remembering that we discover anew our common humanity, our hope for peace and commit ourselves to a better future, for which they laid down their lives that we may have a new heart and a new spirit. First World War resources Churches across the Diocese will be marking events during the next four years as the country looks back to the conflict that ravaged Europe 100 years ago. Prayers, music, literature and art are available the Church of England as part of a pack of resources commemorating the centenary of the First World War. The pack includes: • A selection of suitable readings from the Bible • Appropriate hymns, songs, music, literature and art • A selection of different kinds of prayer (including a Litany of remembrance) • An outline for a service around a War Memorial Further material will be made available throughout the years of commemoration up to 2018. If you want to make use of these resources, you can download the resources by going to the Church of England's website www.churchofengland.org and clicking on the 'World War One' box. Since the August meeting Members had enjoyed a Fish & Chips cruise at Tewkesbury, a visit to Weston and Hereford Cathedral for the Festival of Flowers. The walking group explored the ups and downs of Eastcombe and the Toadsmore valley on a beautiful summers day. An extra walk to celebrate 28 years of walking was held on 30th September following the river around Malmesbury starting with coffee in the Abbey Church. The proposed film at Tewkesbury this month is “Jersey Boys”. A talk on “Acupuncture Chronic Pain and Headaches” was given by Mr Adrian Lyster. He explained how Acupucture is now common place as a treatment within the Health Service where once it was regarded with sceptism. He then invited questions from the floor and there was no shortage of people to seek advice on a particular problem! All were treated with humour and pertinent advice. At the meeting on October 15th at Birdlip Village Hall at 7:15pm we welcomed some employees from Waitrose who educated us on different Wines and Cheese; it was an evening to savour. The church looked beautiful, with every corner filled with flowers. Everyone contributed to the service with special thanks to Hal who read one of the lessons and Clara and her mother who helped with the prayers. The collection was in aid of the Addington Fund, which offers help and support to farmers in distress. The mountain of dried foods were later very gratefully received by the food bank in Cirencester. Thanks to all those who so generously donated. Thanks also to Wendy and her team for coordinating and arranging such a delicious lunch afterwards. A real celebration of thanks and praise for all that God provides. 7 A GENTLE REMINDER THAT THE CHILDREN’S CHURCH IN DAGLINGWORTH IS INTENDED FOR THE WHOLE BENEFICE. On the first Sunday of every month at 10.00 a.m. a very informal service is held for children and their families and usually lasts for about half an hour. It is open to everyone in the Benefice. It just happens to be held in Daglingworth Church. Yes,for many it involves a car journey but we would LOVE to see you if you felt you would like to come. Refreshments are always served afterwards, usually of a chocolate nature, which can be a big draw for some?! Do come, you would be more than welcome! With business over at our September Meeting, Angela Panrucker entertained us with her Gloucestershire Slide Quiz. She showed us 30 beautiful slides that she had taken herself and tested our knowledge of the county that some of us have always lived in. It was surprising how much there is to learn – for instance where is the window depicting Thomas the Tank Engine? (Rodborough Church), how long is the Cotswold Way (106 miles) and what and where is Hetty Peglars Tump (homework!)? By the time this is read, D.A.W.I. will have enjoyed their light hearted Fashion Show in October and will be looking forward to the Wine and Cheese AGM in November. More excitedly though, we will be looking forward to our 90th Birthday Party in December. We will be having this in the Village Hall for members and specially invited guests. It is amazing to think that our W.I. was started in the 1920s – what fun it would be to be able to travel back in time to that first meeting! Miserden Miserden Village Hall Parties-Functions-Meetings, Kitchen Available. To hire please ring 01285 821829 Miserden is retuning to normal after the filming of Cider with Rosie has completed. We've lost The Woolpack and regained The Carpenters Arms. One of the producers of the show kindly came into school one day and spoke to the children about the filming process. The children asked many thoughtful and inquisitive questions of him. In November the children will be performing in Gloucester Cathedral as part of the Gloucester Cathedral Young Voices Project, this is a fantastic opportunity for the children to take part in an exciting event and showcase the wonderful voice they have as they sing in unison! They have also been asked to take part in the Cheltenham Oratorio Project, for which they have composed their own song. Preparations for the school Harvest Festival Service are under way to be held on Friday 24th October at 9.30am at St Andrew's Church. All members of the community are welcome to this service and, following the service, to come back to the school for coffee and a community cake sale. This sale is to raise funds for a charity that has become close to the heart of the school community: Cancer Research. The school is also collecting food donations for the Stroud Food Bank. The children of Miserden C of E Primary School have worked together and undertaken to sponsor the education of a Kenyan schoolboy called Senchura. 9 The children have raised the money themselves by holding cake sales and other fundraising events. Miserden bonfire night is on Sunday 2nd November, gates open at 5pm with fireworks at 6pm. Tickets cost £4.50 for adults and £2 for children. The fireworks are provided by professional pyrotechnic company Skyburst! On Sunday 16th November there will be a Christmas Market in Miserden. Please come along for all your Christmas shopping. It may seem a long time off, but at the point of writing this, it's only 10 weeks away! About thirty of us had a terrific time ! The multi-talented band, “Oddpiece”, were absolutely first class, giving a beautiful lilt to the tunes, and Alex, their singer, has a lovely voice. Derek, the “caller” was absolutely top rate, guiding us every step of the way, and remaining most patient when we went wrong (which was often). As for the dancing, one or two people had some idea of how each dance was supposed to go, but most didn’t, and fewer worried about it. We dosey-doe’d, and promenaded, and twirled, and “balanced”, and circled left, and circled right, and danced to the middle and back, and advanced, and bumped into people, and forgot the pattern, and lost our partners and found them again, and missed our next couples, but nobody minded. Not taking it too seriously was the one essential requirement, and that’s just what we all did. It was hilarious, and wonderful. As ever at these events, there was more ”bring and share” food than we could all eat, and it was widely varied, tasty and well prepared. It gave opportunity to chat to others, to meet old friends, and make new ones. Thanks to Val and others who organised this terrific event. Huge thanks to Penny and Andrew for letting us enjoy not only the music, dancing, and friendship, but also the inspiring architecture and quality of their barn renovation, which always takes my breath away. And if you did miss it this year, put a note in your diary for next year (around the same time). You really should not miss it again ! Peter Broome 11 Winstone To hire Winstone Village Hall or any equipment please telephone Joan Nie 01285 821574 Saturday@Six – “Celtic Praise” By the time you read this The Celtic Praise style service will have already been held, for the Harvest Festival at Winstone (on Sunday 19th October). This follows the first outing of the Celtic team at the Barn Dance service on October 12th – members of the congregation were very complimentary about the contribution the style of music had in offering our praise. Now we’re looking forward to the coming services, which are planned for Saturdays @Six. Actually, there was one mistake in last month’s magazine (my fault - apologies), as the correct November date is Saturday the 15th, so (to reinforce that) Saturday, 15th November at 6pm, at Winstone church is the place to be. As there’s quite a bit going on in December (!), we’re skipping that one, so the next is (as in last month’s magazine) Saturday, 17th January. However, there is a bit of an issue with the February and March dates, as the “3rd Saturday” is actually the day before the “4th Sunday”, so it would mean two services, close together on the same weekend. We will finalise the dates for these in good time to let you know, so watch this space ! The purpose of these services is to offer another way to praise our Lord, and to open the church not only to frequent church attenders, but also to those who don’t feel comfortable with what they may think of as the “standard” church service. It’s open to the whole benefice (and beyond). We hope to see you there.
