Pastor’s Page Fundamentalism In Focus By Dr. Shelton Smith (continued from last week) Question: How do you personally deal with a "fundamentalist gone evangelical"? Dr. Smith: It means I cannot be close to him any longer. I can't support his work. I'll do what I can to influence him and to woo him back, but I cannot promote him. Dr. Rice was never quick-triggered to cut people off. He would try to work through the matter and get it corrected before he severed fellowship or publicly commented on it. I think he was right to do it that way. Question: How do you feel about fundamentalist pastors going to evangelical pastors' conferences? Dr. Smith: I'm happy to learn all I can from whomever I can, but I do not think it wise to be in attendance at the functions being held by evangelicals, the charismatics, the Promise Keepers, the ecumenicists, etc. You dilute your influence with some of the very people in that crowd who may be leaning toward getting out. Sometimes they laugh behind our backs and say, "We had 300 independent, fundamental Baptist pastors at our conference." When our guys go to their "how to" meetings, they won't have much sway with our "come out from among them" message. When you walk through the door to "get out," don't stick your head back in to look around. Question: What do you recommend for fundamentalist people to do in order to learn "how to"? Dr. Smith: Years ago, I started going to the National Sword of the Lord Conference every year. After a few years, I started taking my wife and then my staff; then I started urging my church people to go, especially my leadership people. (to be continued….) Diana’s Desk MOST READERS PREFER KJV Because the New International Version of the Bible has been the best-selling version for decades, many assume it is the most popular. However, a recent study by Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) found that the most-read version is the King James Bible. Their study, entitled "The Bible in American Life," stated that 55 percent of Americans who read the Bible prefer the KJV. Only 19 percent of Bible readers prefer the NIV. Stephen Smith of Bible Gateway found that almost 45 percent of verses searched on Google were KJV, while about 24 percent were NIV. Smith's study also found that KJV searches have been rising since 2005. The cost will be $5 Dear pastors and praying friends, So many of you that have been with us from the beginning can only imagine how thrilled we felt as one-by-one we saw these students file into class on Friday morning, October 10th. It was something that God had put on our heart 3 years ago, and to finally see the Eternal Life Baptist College coming together under the ministry of the Hadeyah-Maadi Baptist Church was truly amazing. However, our patience and efforts have been small in contrast to Pastor Samuel Thomas. As an Egyptian pastor who has labored here for 25 years now, seeing a Baptist college come to Cairo was nothing short of a miracle. Finally, we have a safe place where Egyptians can come and prepare for the ministry of church planting both here, and within North Africa & the Middle East. Our next big goal will be to see a graduate from the college enter the ministry. Please pray that God will use one of these men. We already know of cities that have families who are wanting to start Bible studies and churches across Egypt. The only solution is to train men. Bible College Update: We have received 78% of the funds needed to complete the furnishings of the college! 9 students attended the first day, and we have more people now interested. We are hoping to have purchased and completed everything around December 1st. Total Needed - $1,040 For the Glory of His Name, Wes & Rachel Gazaway
