ALL SOULS’
These days modern society has embraced Halloween - also known as All Saints Eve or
All Hallows Eve. Halloween has become increasingly popular over the last ten years.
Twenty years ago Halloween was barely acknowledged in Australia and now large
numbers of people celebrate Halloween with parties, dress ups and also trick or
treating. It is interesting that Halloween has become so popular without the wider
society knowing why and the tradition that it stems from.
Halloween is the first day of three. All Hallows Eve is the 31st of October, All Saints is
the 1st of November and All Souls on the 2nd. These three days were referred to as
‘Hallowmas’, which is a time that the Christian Church used to remember the lives of
the Saints and the lives their faithful departed loved ones.
These celebrations can be linked to different world religions and were influenced by
Celtic and Gaelic spirituality. Different religions throughout the ages have their own
celebrations for the dead. Traditionally Christians would visit the graveyards at this time
of year - bringing flowers and other symbols for their loved ones graves. Over time,
Hallowmas has now been referred to as either All Saints or All Souls. The three distinct
days have been consolidated into one.

Ascribe to the Lord, you powers of heaven :

Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell
you, the Son can do nothing on his
own, but only what he sees the Father
doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does
likewise. The Father loves the Son and shows him
all that he himself is doing; and he will show him
greater works than these, so that you will be astonished. Indeed, just as the Father raises the
dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life
to whomsoever he wishes. The Father judges no
one but has given all judgement to the Son, so
that all may honour the Son just as they honour
the Father. Anyone who does not honour the Son
does not honour the Father who sent him. Very
truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and
believes him who sent me has eternal life, and
does not come under judgement, but has passed
from death to life.
‘Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is
now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the
Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just
as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted
the Son also to have life in himself; and he has
given him authority to execute judgement, because he is the Son of Man. Do not be astonished
at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in
their graves will hear his voice and will come out—
those who have done good, to the resurrection of
life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

have passed away and
how they inspired you.
It is amazing that as a
child we have brief
memories of adults
that we are not even
related to, teaching us
about life. These
memories subtly
shape us and refine
our values. Think of
those people who you
have know who have
shown character as a
person, who have
loved freely and
radically even when
others have not been
able to.
Give thanks to God for
putting these people
into your life. And
remember - you might
be the inspiration to all
of those around you - a
Saint in disguise
