Study Abroad Scheme (2014/15)
Information Sheet
I.
Objectives
The Study Abroad Scheme is funded by Community College of City University (CCCU) to
provide the opportunity for students to spend one semester or a summer term at a reputable
institution (university or degree-granting college) in Australia, the UK, the US, or Taiwan. The
Scheme aims at:

enhancing students’ English proficiency, and

enriching students’ educational and personal experience through immersion in a
different environment.
The Scheme
1.
The Division has identified a number of suitable host institutions which offer summer
courses (usually 6 credit-units) from June to early August 2014 or a semester study (12
to 15 credit-units) in semester A 2014/15. These include

The credit-unit earned through studying these courses can be transferred to the
student’s programme of study. In other words, the student can take correspondingly
fewer courses in CCCU.

Eligible and interested students can apply for the scheme, using the Application Form
of the scheme and indicating the preferred option(s). They can consult the Study
Abroad Coordinators for information about the scheme, the institution or the country.
4.
Interested students should take IELTS (Academic mode) on or before 15 December
2014 or TOEFL on or before 22 December 2014 if the English requirements have not
yet been fulfilled.

Applicants should submit their applications by 14 January 2015 (Wednesday).
6.
Applications will be screened and the applicants may be invited to attend an interview
in February 2015. Successful applicants will be informed by the end of February 2015.
7.
Successful applicants have to apply themselves in spring 2015 to the host institution
for admission to the courses1. While the Division will offer its assistance, whether the
student is accepted is subject to the decision of the host institution. The student has to
pay the application fee, which will be reimbursed if the application is accepted by the
institution.
8.
Before students make their course choices, they are advised to consult the programme
leader for courses offered in the host institution that can have the credit-units
transferred to the programme of study. Students can also consult the Acting Head of
the Division if the course to be exempted is about General Education.
9.
If accepted, the student has to pay the tuition fee to the host institution in advance2, but
will be reimbursed the amount before the end of June 2015.
10.
The student has to pay the tuition fee to CCCU for the number of credit units taken in
the host institution according to the payment schedule of CCCU for summer term
(around mid-July 2015) or semester A (the first week of September 2015).
11.
The student is responsible for arranging air flight and accommodation with the host
institution.
12.
The student will travel to the host institution independently (with fellow students but
without the company of teaching staff). Throughout the study period, the student is
responsible for his/her own study, daily living, and safety.
13.
The student may join trips organised by the host institution at his/her own expense
(except for trips/visits that are required as part of a course being studied).
14.
The student may stay longer in the city or country at his/her own expense after the term
or semester has ended but before the CCCU semester starts.
15.
The student is responsible for applying for a transcript from the host institution to
certify his/her completion of study and paying the relevant costs.
16.
The student has to present the flight ticket and receipts of accommodation,
transportation, and study-related expenses (excluding meals) to CCCU for
reimbursement purpose. CCCU will reimburse an amount up to the grant given or 60%
of the expenses, whichever is lower.
17.
The student has to report to the Division his/her completion of study and presents the
transcript as a proof. The Division will transfer the credit-units earned to the student’s
programme of study. The grades of the courses completed in the host institution will
not count in the calculation of the student’s Grade Point Average (GPA).
18.
The student must continue his/her study with CCCU and pay the tuition fee to CCCU.
Quota
1.
CCCU has set aside more than one million Hong Kong dollars to the Division for this
scheme. The exact number of students to be awarded in the scheme depends on the
applicants’ options.

It is estimated around twenty students in this cohort will be awarded the subsidy.
Principles and Responsibilities
1.
Successful students must complete their Associate degree study with CCCU after taking
up the Study Abroad Scheme. Students who fail to comply with this requirement will
be agree to pay back the full financial subsidy (including the tuition fee paid to the host
institution by CCCU and the grant) obtained to CCCU.

The courses to be taken should be relevant and bearing similar number of hours of
study to the student’s programme of study to facilitate credit transfer to the current
study programme.
4.
Successful applicants cannot change their institutional option unless approval by the
Division is obtained.
5.
Successful students are responsible for making applications for the courses to the host
institution themselves as an international student, while the Division will render its
support and assistance.
6.
CCCU is not responsible for the quality of education given by the host institution.
7.
Students must obtain a minimum “C” grade (according to the host institution’s grading
system) in a course in order to gain credit transfer. Should the student fail to achieve
this minimum-grade requirement in any of the subject studied abroad under the study
abroad scheme, the student must take extra course(s) in his/her own programme to
make up for the credit units and pay the additional tuition fee.

CCCU and the Division reserve the right to determine the number of students awarded
for the scheme.
Financial Subsidy
1.
The subsidy a successful applicant gets comprises two components, namely tuition fee
subsidy and a grant:
a. Tuition fee subsidy: The College will defray the tuition fee charged by the host
institution to the student, but the student has to pay for the corresponding creditunits at the prevailing rate to CCCU.
b. Grant: A maximum grant of the following amounts (up to 60% of airfare,
accommodation, study related expenses charged by the institution, visa application,
wiring fee, and transcript application) will be given to students to subsidise part of
the expenses incurred. Meals are not supported.
- HK$5,000 for a whole-semester study in Taiwan
- HK$6,000 to HK$19,000 for study in the summer term in the UK, the US, and
Australia, depending on the host institution and number of courses or CUs
taken

Students can have their IELTS registration fee reimbursed from CCCU if an overall
score of 6.5 is obtained.
Eligibility
1.
The Scheme is open to all current Year One students in the Division (2014 cohort) who
meet the following requirements:

The student must be older than 18 years old before the departure date;

The student must have attained an SGPA of 3.30 or above in semester A 2014/15;

The student must have satisfied the minimum English language requirements set
by the host institution before applying for the Study Abroad scheme;

The student must comply with the medical requirements from the country of the
host institution;

The student must possess valid travel documents

The student should preferably have no previous experience of living or studying in an
English speaking country for more than three consecutive months, and
3.
The student’s contribution to activities of the programme, the Division or the College
will be considered.
Selection of Candidates
1.
Interested students should submit their application to Ms. Jane Fung
([email protected]) through email before 5:00 pm on 14 January 2015
(Wednesday).
2.
There will be a selection process and/or interviews will be held to shortlist candidates
for the scheme. A decision by the selection panel of the Division is final.
3.
The confirmation of the award will be subject to formal admission by the host
institution.
Insurance Coverage
CCCU students are covered by the Group Personal Accident Insurance. For better coverage,
students are advised to take out additional insurance at their own expense. Travel insurance is
not subsidised by the scheme.
IX.
Briefing Sessions
Two briefing sessions with similar contents will be held to introduce the scheme and answer
your questions. Each session will feature sharing from students who have returned from various
host institutions last academic year. Students can attend either session cross campus depending
on their own timetables and availabilities.

this information sheet and to make reasonable and necessary adjustments to it at its sole
discretion.
