Dear Parents and Friends Welcome back to the second half of the autumn term. It has been a very busy start for our Years 11s. On Wednesday they had the first of their GCSE mathematics exams. The second paper is on Monday 10th and pupils must ensure that they bring the correct equipment, including a scientific calculator. Year 11s have 23 school weeks left before they go on study leave, it is therefore essential that pupils use every minute of every lesson and aim for excellent attendance. The Friends of Argoed (PTA) have been busy preparing for the Christmas Fayre. The school is relatively well supported; however, this is an area that could improve. Any parents/carers who would like to support the school in some very specific fundraising activities, please contact the school in the first instance. Thank you to all parents/carers who have supported the school in ensuring that pupils are wearing the correct uniform and in particular school trousers. This is a continuous piece of work and I am happy to report that the vast majority of our pupils have been co-operative and have worked with us. In order to succeed and continue to improve on the excellent outcomes we already achieve, we must work together. We recently produced a wordle with some of the Year 11 pupils to summarise what the school is about, this is the latest version: Mrs D Spence Headteacher Thought for the week: “Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.” Sigmund Freud Important Diary Dates (Please note these dates are provisional and may be subject to change) 10.11.14 25.11.14 26.11.14 04.12.14 5-7.12.14 9-12.12.14 16.12.14 18.12.14 22.12.14-05.01.15 Autumn Term Yr 11 GCSE Maths Exam (P2) Yr 8 Parents Evening Governors – Parents Meeting Christmas Fayre Yr 10 Lille/Aachen Markets School Production - Scrooge Christmas Concert Yr 9/10/11 German Markets School Closed Look out for our new articles notice. The school will make every effort to contact Parents/Guardians first, therefore it is essential that we have up to date contact details. ABSENCE NOTIFICATION If your child is absent from school for any reason, please remember to contact the school reception on 01352 756414 on the morning of their absence. This number does not have the facility to accept SMS text messages, and it is the schools preference that parents do call the school as we are unable to determine whether a text is genuine. MATHS INFORMATION 1. Homework tasks Homework tasks will mainly be set on the website www.mymaths.co.uk again this year. The maths department subscribes to this each year and it is a particularly useful website for independent learning, catch-up and revision. Pupils in all year groups will be given the school login and password by their class teacher as well as a personal login and password so that they can access the work set. An average of at least one per week can be expected. Obviously, a computer and internet service is needed to complete these tasks so all pupils will be given plenty of time to complete a task, usually a week. If any pupil has difficulties accessing a computer at home, then the school computers are available every day at lunchtime and after school. An up-to-date internet browser is also required. Some tasks can be completed mentally; however, most tasks require a pen and paper (and sometimes a calculator) to work out the solutions to the problems. In the unusual event of their being a technical problem, then pupils may “print screen” and hand the task in on paper. Again, the school computers are available to print work out if necessary. Scrooge 2014 Argoed High School Production If anyone would like to sponsor the show please contact Miss S Jones, Drama Department.
