DEDICATIO OF LATERA BASILICA
SAIT LEO THE GREAT
Feast Day – ovember 9th
Today the Church observes the Feast of the
Dedication of the Papal Archbasilica of Saint John
Lateran. Built on land owned by the Laterani family
and with the public approval of the recently-converted
Emperor Constantine, Pope Sylvester I dedicated the
church (also known as the Archbasilica of the Most
Holy Savior) on November 9, 324.
The Lateran Basilica is the Cathedral Church of
the Diocese of Rome and the official ecclesiastical
seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is the pope. An
inscription above its main portal reads, Sacrosancta
Lateranensis ecclesia omnium urbis et orbis
ecclesiarum mater et caput (Most Holy Lateran
Church, of all the churches in the city and the world,
the mother and head). It ranks above all other
churches, including Saint Peter’s Basilica and for that
reason, unlike all other Roman Basilicas, it holds the
title of Archbasilica.
Feast Day – ovember 10th
Leo I was elected pope in 440 and reigned for
20 years. He made contributions to theological and
political matters, demonstrating firm resolve in both.
In the theological, his most notable act took place
during the Council of Chalcedon, when he stated the
doctrine of the Incarnation of Christ.
He is
traditionally credited with meeting Atilla the Hun and
stopping his advance on Rome after sacking Milan in
452. This is famously depicted by a mural in the
Vatican painted by Raphel (1512). Leo was one of the
most proactive of the early popes in centralizing the
universal authority and jurisdiction of the bishop of
Rome over the Church. Leo died in 461. In 1754, he
was declared a Doctor of the Church. He is depicted
in papal robes with the triregnum (papal tiara).
THAKSGIVIG DAY SCHEDULE
On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday,
ovember 27th, at 10:00 AM, Saint Agnes will
offer a Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving with the
Schola Cantorum singing. This will be only Mass
offered on Thanksgiving Day.
On Friday, November 28th, Saint Agnes will
follow a Civic Holiday Schedule, with Masses at
8:10 AM, 12:10 PM, and 1:10 PM. The church will
close shortly after the 1:10 PM Mass. No confessions
will be heard and the rectory will be closed on
Thursday and Friday.
ATTED DAILY MASS
Do you sometimes wonder what your going to do
during the day? Have you ended your day feeling that
you really did not accomplish much? Perhaps you
have time on your hands? Have you asked yourself:
how can you make a difference in the lives of family,
friends, strangers, even the world? Well, have you
thought about ever attending Mass daily or a few times
a week? If you think about it, there is no better way to
spend part of your day; no better way to praise God;
no better place to pray for yourself or anyone for
whatever intentions, including your own! Join fellow
parishioners, along with people who work in the area,
in adoring, praising, and petitioning God in his house
and at the table of the Lord. Here at Saint Agnes we
have six daily Masses. Give it some thought.
OTES O THE MUSIC
Today, the Schola sings music celebrating the
papacy and the sanctuary. According to legend,
Missa Papae Marcelli was written in defense of
polyphony during the final session of the Council of
Trent; through it Palestrina demonstrated that clarity
of textual declamation and intricate polyphony could
coexist.

DEDICATIO OF THE LATERA BASILICA
LAST WEEKED AT SAIT AGES
WELCOME TO SAIT AGES
Seventeen people attended our meeting to discuss
plans and seek support to replace the church’s pews
and kneelers. Two presentations were given and
questions were answered. One presentation was given
by Fr. Murphy and the other was given by Mr. Tom
Farrell of “Changing Our World.” Those attending
were excited about the necessary work to be done,
especially after viewing pictures of what the pews will
look like as well as the upholstery for the
seats. Changing Our World will be assisting us in
raising the funds necessary for the purchase of the
pews, kneelers, and frontals as well as the much
needed renovation of the wood floors on either side of
the sanctuary and the terrazzo floor in the church
proper. Two of forty pews have already been paid for
and will be memorialized in accord with the desire of
the donors. More information on how you can assist
us in making this happen will be forthcoming.
All visitors are most welcome to worship and pray
at Saint Agnes. Please consider registering as a
parishioner and becoming more involved here as a

THE TEMPLE AD WORSHIP
In all of today’s readings, the temple is
prominently mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams of
living water flowing out from the temple, watering the
desert, bringing life to all living things, offering fresh
healing to God’s people. Paul reminds the Corinthians
that their faith rests upon the firmest of foundations,
Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those
who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of
the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with
them, but in them. For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the
temple had come to be identified with the presence of
God and the only place where authentic worship of
God took place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus
identified himself not with the temple, but as the
temple. In so doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in
what it means to worship God, to be in God’s
presence. No longer was a place to be the focus of
prayer. Instead, a person, the person of Jesus Christ,
becomes the center of our worship.

READIGS FOR LATERA BASILICA
First Reading: I saw water flowing out of the temple;
wherever the river flows, every living creature
shall live (Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12).
Psalm: The waters of the river gladden the city of
God, the holy dwelling of the Most High
(Psalm 46).
Second Reading: Do you not know that you are the
temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in
you? (I Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17).
Gospel: Destroy this temple and in three days I will
raise it up (John 2:13-22).

YOU GOTTA’ LAUGH
Children were lined up in the cafeteria of a
Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of
the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a
note, and posted on the apple tray: “Take only ONE.
God is watching.” Moving further along the lunch
line, at the other end of the table was a large plate of
chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note,
“Take all you want. God is watching the apples.”
